Some people may enjoy cold showers, bad food, and isolation. I dont see how thats really relevant, the purpose of prison throughout history has generally been to deprive individuals of freedoms in response to a crime deserving of punishment. Whether or not they get their jollies by staring at a blank wall for 8 hours a day isnt really relevant.

A little bit of "release" can change an unpleasant situation from unbearable to bearable.

When you look at the history of prisons, and the current situation, I think youd be hard pressed to prove that conditions are so much more unbearable than they have been in the past. People have somehow managed to endure far worse, I dont think taking a board game away is going to result in white-collar criminals turning into psychopaths.

Because everyone who installs 30 addons turns around and bitches about all the memory leaks in firefox. And then when Mozilla does something to STOP the leaks (integrate buggy addons as properly written code), people bitch about bloat!

Seems like if you had your way wed still be at v1.0 in terms of features, and id need addons for the new tab button on tab bar, moveable tabs, undo close tab, tab Xes on the tabs, plugin management, session restore, etc. Not sure if you remember what it was like having to use 15 addons, but it was a MAJOR PITA-- updates breaking everything (and having to wait several weeks for that addon to work again), leaks, instability, addons being abandoned (and having to hack them to work with newer releases), conflicts, not to mention having to go back to vanilla on every new machine.

The stuff that has been pulled into core has for the most part been a good call, and involves features that are STANDARD on all the other browsers-- chrome has built in theme alteration, whats the beef? Why is it bloat in firefox? Has it occured to you that one of the reasons people like chrome is because they dont have to spend 3 hours dicking with it to get it how they like it?

I go into a DC office building, and I have no reception. The calls drop about 1% of the time (which, given average daily call volume, is really a lot), and data is awful (a few kbps at best).

Maybe its unfair of me to blast them so strongly because the nextel side is so terrible-- several clients with sprint seem to do OK-- but as Nextel is now a part of their company, I think Im justified in blaming Sprint for Nextel's continued failures, not to mention how infuriating it is to be put through a phone-system labyrinth as they shuttle me between the Nextel and Sprint customer service sections.

Google desktop search indexes your documents in order to provide a quick search service. There's no way users can be sure the indices aren't shared with Google, despite no technical need to do so in order to provide that desktop user with a quick search of their own data.

And OSX stores all of your documents, so theres no way users can be sure the contents arent shared with Apple. Is that how we form evidence against someone on slashdot, with wild speculation?

There is talk of educational institutions outsourcing email (and possibly calendaring) to places like Google and Microsoft as default policy—by default, students get Google/Microsoft accounts instead of accounts hosted by the school.

Has it occured to you that paid accounts might not be subject to the same sorts of concerns about privacy that free ones are?

It's not easy to contract around these problems. Institutions can't rely on local law to help (most educational institutions are not in California or Washington).

And somehow this means that its impossible to sue Google? What?

Making it default policy to route student email/calendars through Google's servers risks inadvertent exposure of private student data and places the educational institution in a position where it would be hard for them to do anything to prevent that leak from happening again.

I dont think that follows, and I imagine they could sue if Google had broken some part of their privacy policy or the contract with the school.

I merely find it interesting that people would be willing to try this with so little information about who runs it and what structural forces may result in them divulging your data to anyone but you.

Yea, its not as if their policies are linked on almost every one of their webpages....

Not trying to come across as a Google apologist but its getting ridiculous having people launch into these stupid media-driven attacks on google for no other reason than that theyre too popular. Their privacy policies arent new, we've known about them for years, its not like all of a sudden theyve gone rogue or something.
