That seems like a great idea and will work fine until a monopoly is formed. While this may seem like no big deal would you trust the free market to correct itself if HP were to buy Lexmark. What if the engineered a print cartridge that couldn't be refilled. Competition brings out the best in everyone, people and organizations, but it's much easier to win with no competition, hence the goal of most any business: Eliminate the competition.
This, while not news, is different. You have a choice in weather or not to work for a company, you don't have a choice to go to school. A student willing to disobey when he thinks he's both right and smarter than the teacher is likely going to come out of school suited for more than a mindless factory job.
The presence of charlatans doesn't invalidate dowsing as a load of crap. There are plenty of other para psychological phenomena that crackpots make empty claims about which have some measure of scientific evidence to support. Saying Randi's unclaimed million dollar prize going unclaimed invalidates all paranormal phenomena is a horrendous false analogy.
Imagine if Randi offered a million dollars to demonstrate that prayer works, who'd be lining up to claim the prize? Televangelist mostly. I doubt Mother Theresa would have jumped at the opportunity. Anyone who'd dedicated their life to their faith and truly believed their prayers had power would see such a test as a horrible perversion.
Usually note a quote nazi, but, give credit where it's due. This is a paraphrase from Louis Black's Rules of Enragement, and it needs some correcting.

...what's good for one of you isn't good for the person sitting next to you, it goes like that. We're all different... We're all... Snowflakes.
I know that there are no general rules of health because there was a gentleman living in New York a few years ago who was 115, he was the oldest man living in New York at the time, and he got around with no trouble, and could deal with everything that came his way. And of course people asked him, "well what was your diet." And from the ages of 90 to 115 his diet consisted of three gallons of Thunderbird Wine a week, and bread fried in fat pack. They asked him, why didn't you fry your bread in bacon, he said bacon's too lean. Here's a guy who knew exactly what his body needed, and lived a rich full life. And if he'd gone to a doctor the doctor would have told him "What the f*ck is the matter with you? You're outta control god damnit! You know what, you're gonna have to start eating vegetables" and he would have, and he'd of been dead in a week."
Now are we talking about a true counter-terror expert or a talking head which will instill the fear the current administration relies upon to get away with [insert nearly endless list hear].
A computer expert is likely an optimal person to offer insight because they're good at distinguishing between a perceived threat and an actual threat. That's one of two major problems with our current attitude towards terrorism is we're reacting more to perceived threats than actual ones. We've done a great deal towards securing airports but I don't feel we're any more than marginally safer.
As far as the "It Just Don't Look Right" mantra, really big problem with that is two important concepts in our legal system: Due Process and Probable Cause. If you really want to trade those for the illusion of security, please leave me out of it.
I disagree. Linux is gaining ground and it's because Microsoft is failing. You're quite right about what the majority of users are going to do but I think your estimate of 99.999999% is way too high. I'd estimate 90% of users are going to just suck it up but that 10% that aren't is significant to Microsoft. A large part of their business model is to make sure people think they're the only workable alternative so that 10% will threaten to grow if they don't improve.
Clerk at Airport: "I'm sorry Mrs. Clinton, there seems to be a mix up, you're not clear to fly, don't worry we can get it fixed and have you on the same flight in three days. What? Oh the presidential debate is tonight? Hmm, well I might be able to get you on tomorrow..."
Secondly, I'd like to compare hard numbers between churches' charitable giving, corporations, and you personally. The first two I can get--and relatively speaking, churches compare positively. As for the last, I suppose we'll have wait on that--unless you care to volunteer it.
Seems a straw man fallacy to me.
The difference between a church giving to charity and an individual or a corporation giving to charity the church's doctrine mandates it uses is resources to help the community (forgive me if I'm over-generalizing). A corporation exists to generate profit, an individual can devote their life to whatever they like.
Parent is stating the opinion that a church spending it's resources trying to grow is in contrast of it's professed goal of helping the community.
These numbers to me validate my suspicion that DX10 was nothing more than a cheep angle to sell Vista. The performance isn't a tremendous improvement and the resulting graphics are enough of an improvement that I'm going to let Vista suck down that much of my hardware.
You actually mentioned the biggest reason I don't want them to have my personal data is the reason they're here to stay.
Microsoft stops even trying to make a quality product the second they don't have to and what's more they blatently flip their own customers the finger. I have yet to hear a spin on DRM in the OS that even makes it sound like it was designed as a benifit to the customer and it's in there none the less. If this takes off and Microsoft no longer has to care about making a secure or good product what they have in their hands to f**k up is a lot more important that what OS I use and I image will be even harder to migrate from.
Those who allowed this to happen, should be the subject of investigation by the Department of Justice. Unfortunately, we may have to wait for another administration to do the right thing.
Don't worry, as soon as a Republican canidate wins by a close margin they will be.
At every Windows iteration we hear "this is the end of Microsoft" and it never really happens. But this time I think they're just a little bit right. Microsoft screwed the pooch big time on Vista and they know it, but in line with what parent poster said the end of Microsoft doesn't mean Ballmer begging for change on a street corner. If or when they do stop supporting Windows XP they're going to loose marketshare and we'll get a little closer to the OS market competition being based on merit.
The issue isn't weather or not they have to take third party hacks into account. If something they happened to change broke the hack Apple didn't really do anything wrong. The issue is that it's quite likely that Jobs sent an e-mail to the devs saying "they're f**king with us, break their phone".
Different sexes attracted to different types of work, Outragous! All field should be 50/50. I'm outraged that there aren't more male nannys. And when was the last time your trash was picked up by a woman. It's time for the discrimination to stop!
I doubt that the DMCA will be an issue. Though it's been preverted, the technology retarded politicians they convinced to pass the DMCA are under the impression the circumvention clause was really about preventing piracy. Attempts to use the DMCA as to control a market have been shot down before in court (Lexmark Int'l v. Static Control Components, Chamberlain v. Skylink).

That FBI notice on all my DVDs seems to suggest otherwise. I'd repost it, but it might be copyrighted too.

Right, and in other news:

Too true, but this is a list of things the game developers want, what you're talking about isn't really the developers job.

Agreed. Perhaps my previous post didn't make it clear but I would definately agree that the blame rest at our feet.
Most political experts feel that Iraq is promoting terrorism more than preventing it.
