The people flipping out are the chicken littles 5:01 developers. The n00bs that don't bother researching anything. The ones that cry, zomfg don't treat my desktop like a phone... ok, they're not but cry away. They showed in the keynote how a dev/power user can still do the same stuff they did in W7 and more but I think its easier for people complain.
Of course it can be turned off, funny thing, I learned that by watching the keynote. W8 looks pretty sweet and I'm a developer. Will I use the UI, no, but I'll happily write applications for users that do use the UI.
Sometimes I wish it would, I'd like to get back to doing ASP.NET MVC development because I enjoy it more but the demand for SL has been nuts. As an Indy I'll do whatever.
Right? I mean, hey, lets write a calendar app for a mobile phone... but wait... how on earth will we get the information on the calendar app to show up on our app that runs on our desktop. Some how we'll send data back and forth, ZOMFG PATENT INFRINGEMENT PATENT INFRINGEMENT PATENT INFRINGEMENT...sad...
at least at the state level is the horrible pay for tech folks. Senior level positions that barely pay 49k. When I see ads in the local paper for state jobs that pay terrible and then read about data getting exposed, lost, etc. I'm not surprised.

Nothing stifles technology better than a portfolio of patents.
Did you watch the keynote, the bit about developers using W8?
"but I doubt they will let you turn off the Metro UI completely." Incorrect.

Actually no, they showed a demo, looked pretty straight forward to me.
I don't reboot my W7 much, I guess that's a funny joke though :|
Score:5, Insightful? Huh...

I don't know what eswt is and comparing silverlight to java doesn't make sense. Alot of what you wrote doesn't make sense, friggen.

At 38, that's what I do but I'd do it even if I didn't code for a living because it's also my hobby. I guess I'm a geek.

I live in Nebraska and the state is deciding on whether or not people will be allowed to drink booze in parks yet pot is illegal as hell. Go figure...
"Unfortunately, our ideas don't count for much..." You're a pilot or a developer?
Sounds similar to what tools like MusicBrainz can do. http://musicbrainz.org/
I'll stick with Verizon where I have bars all over the state as opposed to AT&T where I didn't.
Google's page is pretty simple, a text box and a button, not a ton of content.
