Perhaps you should try MSIE5 on Solaris. I find it highly amusing that the fastest, most standards-compliant, and best looking browser for Solaris is made by Redmond, not Sun's butt-buddies at Netscape.

Seriously. As we all know, Netscape 4 barfs upon encountering any web technology less than five years old. Netscape 6 is an improvement, but takes over twenty seconds to initially load on my Blade 100 (500MHz USparcIIe, 256MB RAM), while IE takes less than five. Wow. Microsoft is even professional enough to include CDE icons.

The only problem is that IE won't display local directory listings on UNIX. That's too bad, because I usually use Netscape for this purpose when browsing large numbers of files. (Faster and more effective than CDE's pathetic folder system.)

I also love how IE on Win32 will show thumbnails of all your images. It'd be great if IE on UNIX could do this. I'm not going to pull any punches: it's wonderful for pornography. It's fine for other images too, but I'm a software engineer, not a graphic artist, and porn is the only plausable reason for having a 1.5GB image archive. ;-D

Most people are doubtful about the existence of such software, but I can assure you, it is quite real. Yeah, it lags behind the Win32 version (as that link shows, 5.0/SP1 is in beta), but it's light years ahead of offerings from Netscape or anyone else.

Hey, buddy, open your eyes and see the world: THAT IS THE POINT OF ALL BUSINESS. We work to make money to buy food and housing and education and entertainment.

I buy food and pay rent. I could hunt/gather my own food and build my own housing, but it would leave me with much less time to pursue my career. The extra time I can devote to my work improves my industry. The people that provide my food and shelter subscribe to the same model of society, and therefore we have argicultual scientists and architects (trained, skilled professionals) in addition to farmers and construction workers (less skilled, less trained professionals). These skilled people allow for improvements in my food (genetically modified, clean crops instead of dirty potatoes grown in gravel pits) and housing (high-rise aparments instead of shacks and tents). This is how things work in the Real World. It is what has allowed this country to become so extraordinarily wealthy.

Large corporations are made of PEOPLE. People who want to provide for themselves and their family. Being successful allows them to invest for their and their families' futures.

A government is made of people too. A government making laws that apply to corporations just breaks down to people limiting other people's power and influence. That is why corporate donations to political parties are protected as Free Speech under the Constitution of my country.

The funny thing is that though you are a poor and rather obvious troll, your drivel is not dissimilar to the heartfelt, empassioned pleas of many a Slashdotter reading this.

With the release of OS X Server, it's obvious that Apple is no longer only pandering to the Photoshop market, and plain-Jane int benchmarking is very valuable in evaluating the use of Apple as a server platform; what the hell do I care if my Mac server can run Photoshop?

They'll lose some market share, sure, but IE will still be pre-installed in XP anyway. And even the average AOL customer will notice that Nutscrape is a slow, buggy memory hog. The ball is totally in Microsoft's court on this one.

AOL may still be "#1", but as more people become Web-savvy, many will inevitably dump AOL for cheaper, more reliable ISPs. This is a pattern which many, many Slashdotters have followed -- you get a new PC, sign up for AOL, eventually learn what the hell you're doing and realize that AOL is crap, and get a regular ole' ISP account which, while crap, is an improvement in service for less money. Maybe I'm an idealist, but I can't believe that any business whose mission statement is "find morons and newbies and bill monthly them until they get a clue" will succeed in the long run. I hope that people eventually realize that AOL is just like Apple -- while some of their customers are professionals with legitamate reasons for needing the company's services, most are pre-teen girls and grandmas who are looking for the LCD path to computing.

De Raadt Revokes Yet Another Developer's Commit Privileges
    by The_Messenger

Theo de Raadt revoked software developer John Smith's OpenBSD commit privileges earlier today, when Smith refused to let De Raadt play with his shiny yellow ball. Tensions between Smith and De Raadt have been running high after the 1999 "Hey! He broke my Lego castle!" incident, and today's ball-related disagreement was the final straw.

"We all know how Theo is about his toys," says fellow OpenBSD developer Chad Jones. "He's threatened to revoke my commit privileges on multiple occasions when I haven't let him borrow my Tinker Toys for the weekend."

Sources report that Jones' commit privileges were revoked shortly after he made this statement.

A second developer, commenting on the guarantee of anonymity, recounts today's fiasco. "John was sitting by the swing set, playing with his yellow ball, when Theo finished watching Mr Rogers and came outside. Upon sight of the ball, Theo immediately demanded that possession of the ball be until the afternoon. When John protested, Theo began rolling on the ground, crying, and beating his fists. John then muttered something about De Raadt being 'a big baby', and that was when John's commit privelges were taken away."

De Raadt is the lead developer for the OpenBSD project, which was created in 1998 after an unrelated temper tantrum caused him to steal the NetBSD source code and run home.

    Mothers Outraged

Neighborhood mothers expressed open resentment of De Raadt and his "no good family" after today's blowup. "I don't want you playing with that Rat boy anymore," Jones' mother was reported to have told several developers. "He's so mean to all of you, I don't understand why you keep going over to his house. And he smells like he needs a bath."

De Raadt has not returned our calls regarding his personal hygeine.

A few years ago I was swapping hardware between an NT and a FreeBSD box, and I that was when I saw a first-hand comparison of the TNT2 and Xpert 98. Now in terms of 3D performance, the Xpert 98 can't touch the TNT2, but when I swapped cards and put the TNT2 in the FreeBSD box, I had to turn the monitor brightness up a whole lot to see the screen clearly. Conversely, I had to turn the brightness down on the NT box to keep from blinding myself. The TNT2 was dark and mushy on the desktop. Now that I have the GeForce, I wish I still had the Xpert98 for comparison.

Remember how you used to have separate 2D and 3D chipsets? (i.e. the lame onboard chip for the desktop and the Voodoo1 for games.) I find myself pining for those days... I mean, the integration is great for most people, but I'd love to be able to use the Matrox for 2D and the GeForce2 for 3D, the best of both worlds. My GeForce2 (an ELSA Gladiac, btw) does look good in 2D, but it doesn't look great; it's obvious that more attention was paid to superior gamimg performance than a superior desktop.
