  1. Get Renter's Insurance on Gadgets You Backpack Around the World With? · · Score: 1

Having backpacked for extended periods of a time with a laptop and other gear, my two pieces of advice.
    1. Get Renter's Insurance. Covers you the world over, its dirt cheap and generally don't even need a police report. So if all your stuff gets ripped off, like your backpack, you can get it covered (it only does it in one shot though, so if you just lose a dig camera, not generally worth filing).
    2. Ditch the laptop and use cafes or other devices unless you have a really good reason for the laptop. I brought mine because I was still doing the occasional work, but honestly, I wanted to ditch it. You'll feel freer, both of weight and peace of mind, without it.
    3. Get a big fat ipod, running low on music sucks. Have a shuffle as a backup, battery lasts forever and when your main ipod dies you'll still have some music.

Geez, I mean according to this guy.. if I buy a bunch of pc parts and put them together, I don't have a computer, but I will if I purchase one pre built from Apple, Compaq, or Dell.

Unix is like the modular/build your own OS of today. I feel it's like buying a computer, I can either build it from the ground up, grabbing that, leaving that, using this program, downloading this windows manager, etc, or I can go out and get some dist/ver with everything already set up. MacOS and Windows are the cheap websurfers you can buy that will only do a limited amount and will only let you use what they have (until they are hacked of course). I figure Apple and MS should go the way of Unix, build a core OS, and let everyone else make dists, versions, designs etc (like LiteStep), and then maybe someone like MS could finally get a stable, working OS. Of course, with OS X Apple is doing this very thing.

Don't get me wrong.. I started with Redhat, and there are certainly things I like about Redhat, but too often it seems that the "gee-whiz" gizmos and ideas are getting in the way of stability and functionality.

Unlike Sun and MS, Redhat is on the ball, does release fixes, and generally stays on top of things, but I wouldn't mind if they just held off releasing versions with beta software and so many bugs. Have more Betas! Get more of us linux freaks out here to test your releases, take a bit more time, hire more testers. What you have now isn't working well enough.

Until then.. I've decided to move to debian myself.. tired of things breaking just because I upgrade my version of redhat. Otherwise, I'll still be passing it onto friends who are just getting started with linux, I figure it is still one of the easier dists to use.

I actually use pike in a work environment, since we run Roxen as our webserver. In general, I've liked it, as well as its integration with roxen. Here are my few good and bad points about it

    • Good Points
    • The manual is pretty decent. I'd hope for more short examples of code for some of the different functions, but in general, it has been a real asset (Roxen's manuals on the other hand, I've found to be rather lacking and frustrating. A downside to an otherwise good webserver).
    • Easy interpreted language for c/c++/java programmers to pick up. Most of my previous programming knowledge being from school, Pike was a LOT easier to pick up and use compared to working and learning perl.
    • Bad points
    • One complaint I've had, is how it returns the NULL values from a mySQL database. It likes to return it as a 0, instead of just being a null value, which has caused a few problems.

Nonetheless, I've liked it so far and most of my problems have been the lack of good documentation for Roxen, compared to problems with Pike itself. I'm not really the best to evaulate languges(give me some time though), but if you know c/c++, it's a good interpeted language to move too.

My question, and I feel it's something that should certainly be investigated before napster instigates any actions, is just HOW were they collecting information? Sure, they say they've got some "AI Program" doing the search of 5,000 individuals, but that doesn't mean their searches were successful. Are they looking for every mp3 that has metallica in the title? Or has some reference to a Metallica song title? How are they even sure that these mp3s are even Metallica mp3s without downloading and listening to them (Can't you see it, NetPD sued as largest pirate of illegal mp3s *grin*)? Then, the question is, is it illegal to have an mp3 with Metallica in the title, but the actual music isn't Metallica?

I think NetPD needs to be saying a lot more about it's "AI Program" before anybody (slashdotters, lawyers, napster, etc) take their results seriously. In the meantime, I vote we (as in slashdotters), make a rather annoying song about how Metallica sucks and flood napster with tons of these with Metallica titles. How about it? Of course, we'll want to change spellings, titles, file size, etc to throw their "AI Program" off.

Note: I have heard of a company that is developing software that can identify/pattern match music based on properties within the file. So maybe NetPD is using something like this, but they should certainly be able to prove their results are accurate.

It happens, and he used her, and unless you happen to be close to either of them and know what happened, I don't really think you can say much about it, can you? So I disagree with you, I certainly believe there are "predators" out there, men and women who use others for sex, money, weird senses of power they have over others. Human nature also states that predators go for weak and sick prey, and Cheryl was most certainly vunerable. You have been lucky if you haven't been preyed upon, or used, but your probably a lot stronger than Cheryl was. I'm consider myself pretty strong, and I've been used.

I realize it's offtopic and probably most unreasonable, because I'll never give the prick a chance, but I don't care. It's a failing I'm willing to live with. I lost someone very dear to me, and even if she hadn't committed suicide, I'd still be angry at him. Just maybe not as much as I am now.

Never the less, you said you were in a certain situation. Maybe you were used, maybe you weren't, but you could handle what happened, but Cheryl most certainly wasn't. Who knows why the person did what she/he did to you, but I believe "icee" used Cheryl, because she was weak, therefore he "preyed" on her. On top of all this, all people are different, so you can hardly judge other relationships to be just like yours, because it sounds like a similar experience.

    • Brings her to cali from Hawaii
    • He becomes her "first" (And for Cheryl, this was a MAJOR ordeal/moment in her life).
    • She goes home, happy, and absolutely in love.
    • A few days later, he tells her that he is still in love with his ex, and is getting back with her.
    • Her, being the emotional wreck and depressive girl she is, can't cope and ends up killing herself by throwing herself out th 17th story window of her apartment building

She had her problems, but Cheryl was truly a special girl, and I'm still angry for what she did to herself. I don't blame him so much for her suicide, but for his preying upon her.

Nonetheless, I don't think I've ever hated someone as much as I hate "icee", and I've got no problem discrediting and ruining this predator. I just can't believe I've run into him again, now in the media... it makes my skin crawl. Nothing can repay for what he did to Cheryl.

I've seen an alarming trend within GNOME and other linux (GUI)programs/window managers to design their programs after other OS-based programs (mainly windows).

I don't mean to say just because it's linux, it should be different than any other OS/program design out there, or that there aren't some good ideas out there ripe to steal. Rather, it seems that a lot of the time, we're stealing the design, and not putting much thought in how to IMPROVE upon those designs (for example, take the GNOME PIM! Looks EXACTLY like the Outlook calendar).

For example, within MS Outlook, I like the function I can e-mail a calendar invite out, and people can accept/refuse from right within the e-mail, without the recipient having to add the invite manually. On the other hand, I'm continually irritated by the lack of being able to sort and view all incoming mail the way I want to (This would take WAY too long to explain how exactly it's irritating)

Besides Eazel and Helix (two projects I have high hopes for, and I've already been impressed with Helix), how much work/thought has been put into the user interface? Is there anybody out there currently, specifically working on the UI for GNOME and programs for GNOME? We're also talking about more than just pretty graphics, but actual design of the interface, making it more intuitive (aka, easy enough so the novice user can figure it out, but still robust enough the expert can still do what (s)he wants).

On top of that, I wonder how versatility is being worked on as well? I remember reading one time, that a major complaint against Microsoft Office, was that it had grown to such massive proportions, that it was currently designing how office operations work (memo's, docs, meetings, etc.), instead of being designed towards how businesses are run (if that makes sense). In my mind, it'd be better to have an office suite you can configure towards your business model, instead of changing your business model to fit with your software (via plug-ins, modules, configuration, etc. of buzzwords)

As it stands now, Linux competes with Windows for the x86 architecture, and therefore, Microsoft won't even give linux one small advantage for the x86, because it realizes that the control of the OS is what gives them their advantage in the first place.

This might lead you to ask why office wasn't ported to HP-UX and Solaris. Well.. what company do you know that is going to buy an employee a Sparc or HP-UX workstation just so he or she can write some documents and fill out a spreadsheet? The Macintosh is a desktop computer, HP-UX and Solaris aren't. Linux still doesn't have a strong desktop market, so even besides the platform competition, there's another reason to not port Office. As an artist myself, I don't mind people using my scripts and performing them, if they like them, as long as I get credit. I do have a problem if someone takes some of my work, and decides to make a buck off it, without giving me due credit or compensation.

As for a SONY or RCA Tv, that's a brand name on a product, like the Gateway or Sony on top of your monitor. They aren't making money off that title for something they didn't do. If all iCraveTV had was a banner saying "Hey, we're iCraveTV", then there shouldn't have been a problem.

So what if someone mirrored your website, and started selling banner spaces at the top and making mucho bucks. What about your free underground zine? Your band's free demo tape? Yeah, it's public domain, but that doesn't not give anyone an excuse to steal it and make money of it.

As for cable television, at least in the states, you PAY for that service, and they pay for the content and right to re-broadcast it. Your not really paying for cable access to see the public stations, and that's not what they are making they're money off of. They are providing the service of the OTHER stations that aren't public. The public stations are just a bonus, so you don't have to switch between cable and the antenna. iCraveTV could of legally rebroadcast PUBLIC television (aka, anything you can get off public airwaves, which obviously, isn't CABLE) as long as they didn't alter any of the content. As far as I understand, they didn't alter the content, but we're forcing users to look at banners, which aren't part of the broadcast, and weren't paying for the right to post those banner ads. This is equivalent to copying a cd and selling it at full price, without ever giving any revenue back to the recording company or artist. "Hey, I'll just take your content, make money off it, and you'll NEVER see a penny of it". That's stealing.

Nothing is stopping anyone from streaming PUBLIC television, so go ahead. Grab that video encoder, run your antenna into it, and start streaming out over those ADSL and cable modems. Just don't expect to make any money off it.
