It was over 5 years before I got an account... With the recent security debacle where we all ended up in the wrong accounts, not getting one was probably a good move on your part...:)
I am aware of the link between the gospels (except John, which some feel is an eye witness account since it has detail consistent with someone who was there). Many credit Paul with the Q document. However, since they agree with each other on all major points, I hardly think that qualifies as "revision", more like retelling. In any case, I do not support blindly taking everything literally or the infallibility of the bible. Though, with few exceptions, when passages are taken in context, there are surprisingly few contradictions for such a - as you would say - "revised" book. However it is a translation from a more complex language into a dumbed down language. Therefore translations are fallible before even looking at source materials. However, I do accept its message, for personal reasons which are extremely good and completely rational. I won't go into them here, however, this is not the place. In any case, like most rational human beings, we will most likely have to agree to disagree
Though you are not quite correct. Modern non catholic translations can not be considered "revisions" of catholic translations; more parallel translations. Also, translation does not (always)=revision and I have found most translators try to be objective.
I am not here to comment on interpretations of Genesis 1, I'd merely hoped to watch an intelligent discussion. Drinkypoo (is that you?) seemed to imply that some books within the bible were revisions of others, which caught my interest. But perhaps I misread.
Me too. I resisted the temptation to play practical jokes and logged out and back in. If you're in my account and see this, please do me the same favour...
[pedant] Actually a linear regulator would save power. The Zener-resistor combination draws fairly constant current from the supply regardless of the load, so when the ARM goes into sleep mode, full load is still used by the regulator. With a 7805, current is load current + some arbitrary small amount(uA if I recall from the datasheet) of current required to power the circuit. So yes, a 7805 is more efficient(though less than switched mode)... [/pedant] (Yes, I do study electronic engineering...)
But you're right, using the AC power would be better, as long as you could make your power brick small enough and completely unnoticeable.. I'd say a bnc light socket may be the best point of attack, but it may take too long to setup and you may get noticed doing it. You just need to add one of those adaptors that give you two two pin sockets and which take the bulb in the end so the light stays on. The lamp shade may even be sufficient to hide the device...
Disclaimer: I am not liable for anything you do/fail to do with these ideas...:}
I suspect my country is an extreme case, but you are right, viewing videos online in realtime here is rare. But I suspect a better solution would be to allow the local ISPs to set up a local mirror of the more popular portions of various sites. They would compete with each other to be able to do this - it means more customers if you offer a value added service like that. Local bandwidth here is virtually free(if you have DSL), but there is no local content worth viewing.
Uploading only makes sense when your connection is fast enough that your up bandwidth does not slow your down bandwidth. And with a local mirror, large portions of the swarm won't disappear every time there is a (regular) power cut or other service interruption. ISPs have generators here, so their infrastructure is more robust.
As I say my country is an extreme case. Your solution may work well in other third world countries.
You're right. In my life I've followed ad links less than ten times, and only once did it lead to a purchase(Intergrated Circuits).. There simply isn't all that money to be made from advertising in underdeveloped countries unless you can localise the adverts.
I live in a 3rd world country, and I'll tell you that internet cafes here mostly do not have the bandwidth for such. Most people do it from work. Most of us here are still on dial up or equivalent. Even at most companies/universities, you have to get in at off-peak ours to be able to watch youtube.
Even so, it is not uncommon for people in the towns to own (obsolete) computers (P3 era and up).
I imagine this thing chews a fair amount of power ~ 300mW at minimum (no, I didn't read TFA, this is slashdot...). To be able to support both no load and full load, you'd need a fairly high power Zener and resistor. With the addition of a transistor (wow! new technology), you could get away with much lower power rated components (and not draw full power when no load is connected). Or you could just use a LM7805 voltage regulator which is one component... But that might be too easy..?:}
This is a tech news website, where techs go. As content/design creators, we have a vested interest in the laws that are made about copyrights and patents. Especially when those laws disadvantage us.
That and a lot of people here seem to like to freeload.:)
Care to define what you think is a "reasonable amount of time"? I agree that 5 years is too short, but I don't think more than 15 year patents make much sense, otherwise progress may be slowed. Copyright length is another story; 7-14 years seems right.
I managed to run windows 3.11 from a ramdisk (P1 133, 8Mb RAM) and it was extremely quick, but had no such luck with windows 95 or higher even when I had more than enough RAM... I'm not sure its possible, but I haven't the free time to play such games anymore...:)
I assume you mean servers? Putting a grenade in the case of a desktop may make your users a little nervous. In fact even in severs, your sysadmin may decide to look for greener pastures. If the grenade was small enough not to damage the people, I doubt it would be big enough to kill a hard disk beyond recovery...
Most prophets start with "And the Lord said" when delivering messages directly from God. Moses was very human. Being a prophet doesn't magically make you perfect. Look at all the trouble he had in Egypt, or the fact that God told him he would not see the promised land because he messed up. Where was this perfect character God was supposed to pick?
I'd say that God shows quite some patience with his prophets.
This being said, I don't pretend to know if in this case it was God's will. It may be that he knew the Israelites would not accept anything less than that and therefore allowed it so as not to lose them - but that is mere speculation so you can take it or leave it. I have been known to be wrong before.:)
I could do the math making all sorts of assumptions about things like the transmitter antenna gain and such, but thats too much like work and I'd probably be wrong. I suspect not as much as you would think. I can easily talk to a Ham in the UK or America from Zimbabwe on less than 100W into a simple G5RV. I'd guess they're in the region of tens of kilowatts. There comes a point where more power actually degrades your signal to noise ratio.
As someone in a developing country, I can tell you, people here aren't interested in crippled software. Lacking money, they will simply pirate the full version, stick with XP or in rare cases switch to Linux. All it takes is one person with broadband, and everyone here will have the full version within weeks.
Don't know why giving crippled versions to the 3rd world makes sense to microsoft. Before, you'd import buy a laptop which includes the price of the OS and leave it at that. That is if you can afford a PC at all.
Ah, why I couldn't find it comes out. In context, you'll notice that this was moses speaking - not God. God simply said avenge Israel. It was in the context of justice. You may or may not agree that that is just. Yes, you can quite happily blame God for telling the Israelites to avenge themselves, but further than that is dodgy logic. I assume of course you judge "God" by your own standards since you don't believe in him? Which makes the statement "God is apparently a real dick" interesting on a number of levels (sorry; I enjoy strange loops:) ).
I would argue that it was not God's decision at all, but "Adams", whether or not you accept a literal Adam. The idea is that from that point on, people are messed up in a fundamental way that requires them to be fixed.
Is it fair that we should all suffer for Adam's folly? Not really no, but the universe is governed by a set of rules that God does not violate. Is it fair that (from Christian tradition that you are free to not accept) Christ had do die for us? In order for man to be reconciled to God, a sacrifice was required which God quite helpfully provided. The only requirement being acceptance. To understand my point of view try and think of it from God's point of view. It is out of character to violate your own rules, one of which is free will. How do you salvage your creation without becoming something you are not?
Thanks. I enjoy such debates too:). I am also a bit biased, but have debated these topics with friends for years. It is interesting to see varied points of view. I would like to believe I see yours, but I am not always right. We can always agree to disagree.
I would not agree that "acts of God" are acts of God. Rather they are circumstances that God has allowed. Or to be a bit more precise, situations which result since we have withdrawn from God's protection. Humans were never expected to solve such problems, but the reasoning goes, they decided they could when they decided they did not want God. God would hope that we'd realise we can't solve these problems and come back to him.
If you accept the existence God, by logical extension you must accept the existence of evil. Evil is portrayed as wanting to harm humanity. Not that volcanoes or earthquakes are necessarily caused by evil - the world is how it is. Nevertheless, looking at the story of Job, who is tormented by evil, you can see within the Christian belief system, evil is considered powerful and dangerous. God is naturally more powerful than evil (I am not a dualist), but will not violate people's free will. Free will is fundamental to the concept of a loving God.
Sure you can. Lets see, who tormented Job? The devil? Ok. As for the giving of virgin children, I must have missed that one, which is unusual for me. I'll have to look up a reference.
[Poke the angry ogre]
Well done! As I said, carry on. You do it so well.
[/Poke the angry ogre]
I am sure in other circumstances you are quite a reasonable person. It is a new one for me being called irrational and stupid. Can't say it worries me all that much when written like that. Sorry. If you're into rational debate, not namecalling, I'll be quite happy to reply to you. Even though this is off topic.
Ah, unlike your sibling posters, you get it. The key word here is "allow". Maybe God would have stopped such things, but we told him to get lost, and so he told us fair enough, go and solve your own problems then, but when you change your mind, I'll still be here. An all loving God would never simply remove the consequences of people's actions. How else would they learn?
No, I don't expect you to play along, and I am not really trying to convert you. I would just rather it was recognised that among Christians, there are rational reasoning people as well as outright nutcases. Just like among atheists, we have those who aren't quite so rational. See VendettaMF's response to me for a nice example.
Just because you bolt the door doesn't mean you can unbolt it. I never stated that. All I'm saying is if you had "found God" as people like to call it, this may not have changed your mind about being a christian. Christianity is about relationships, not rules or doctrine. And especially not about doctrine on Hell. You'll also notice my use of the word "probably."

Try to answer GPs question, AC. GP asked for examples of contradictions/revisions.
