  1. Snatch on 'Snatch' · · Score: 1

I went to this movie a few days before christmas, and I enjoyed it all the way. The soundtrack fulfills the movie nicely, just like the previous guy ritchie-features, mainly Lock Stock and Two smoking barrels. The movie kinda resembles Lock Stock in several ways, many of the actors are back for more in Snatch after LSTSB. Vinnie Jones (Gone in 60 seconds recently) makes a good villain as always, harder and bader than ever.

I also enjoyed seeing Brad Pitt in his role as a gypsy. The conversations between him and the rest of the crowd was a pleasure to enjoy with loads of enjoyment.

The movie is a bit different, which is what makes it worth seeing. If you enjoyed Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, you're probably gonna enjoy this too, since they're similar in several ways. I'm however predicting that Guy has to evolve a bit more soon, or his style is going to become kinda boring.

I'm not very surprised that you didn't get a link. In fact, i'm quite happy you didn't get it - with that kind of an attitude. In fact - it *is* an honor to get linked to the efnet, and i'm quite fond of the fact that they deserve a good server with a serveradmin with his sense still in good shape. I'm not saying that all efnet-admins are the nicest and most caring people i know (but some of them are quite nice and good friends of me).

    > how the heck are you supposed to have meaning conversations in an IRC channel with over > 50 or 100 people in it???? You don't. :-) When there are 100+ users on a channel, most of them aren't saying anything. They're just idling quietly down in a corner, ignoring most of the things going on in the channel. The main problem is that when there are so many users in one channel - the channel becomes a target for spammers and massinviters. There is no "easy" solution for this, but if you take a look on #norge (norge == norway) on EFNet, you'll see that the channel is moderated - and people will have to register to get voiced. The registration is private, with a password and alike. The channel has over 1k of users at the most busy days. (Usually easter, when The Gathering (the worlds largest computerparty) is held)

I agree with everything you said - i've got the same opinions about what the opers should deal with - and what they quietly should ignore. EFNet is EFnet because of the no-ownership of channels, because of the structure, because of the history and because of (after all) its users. I'm just asking wether that no-ownership-policy may be an indirect cause for the attacks .. but, after all, other networks are also attacked, so it's not the only cause.

.. servers are the most important - so keep them running. But something has to be done so that a scriptkiddies won't "earn" anything on taking down servers.

  5. Re:Blackened on EFnet Hits Turbulence · · Score: 1

Yeah, the loss of blackened was perhaps the first big loss because of the all the attacks. Later several other large providers decided to remove their irc-servers because of the same problems. The history and records of blackened are great - and they'll forever be remembered as one of the greatest servers at efnet. At least its something, but its IRC :)

  7. The future on EFnet Hits Turbulence · · Score: 2

On of the biggest problems with EFNet, has been that there is no 'ownership' of channels - or the fact that no ircops participate in such matters. This is has made it a very interesting for screept (yeah)-kiddies to attack, since they then can annoy the most people by attacking something (that in fact) isn't that useful. There's no surprise in the fact that the number of servers has dropped from 140+ (?) to the 35 servers connected at the moment. Large ISPs will never risk their serious business for something as 'non-profitable' as an IRC-server. Sorrowly, this is becoming more and more of the truth - but hopefully EFNet will survive for a long, long time.

  10. why the ads? on The Future of Making Online Revenue? · · Score: 2

We'll probably see a change from todays ads-based services - the ads are kinda boring and as mentioned, they have a quite low click-rate. What I think we'll see, is that the sites will evolve into more user-based services, where the user can define their own needs - and that they'll pay a minor fee for the use of the material provided therein.

Take Slashdot for an example, i'd gladly be paying a buck a month for getting access to those slashdot-news, but that's probably not i the correct slashdot-spirit. However, there's already a few sites doing this, take a look at http://www.digitalblasphemy.com/ for example, providing high quality 3d-wallpapers (some of the featured in Eterm). There's a quite a large number of free images provided by the site, but for a small fee ($25) you can sign up for the full gallery - and you'll get permission to use the pictures on your own webside and alike. This is a great example of how one could make money of a perfectly "on-your-sparetime" website.

Finally - i hope this will put a little bit more effort into the development of a full good movieplayer for all kind of distributions. If there's one point where i still use windows, it's in fact for using the media player, which has to be one of the best things ever to come from microsoft :-) I've used MTV a bit, but it's not free (which media player infact is. :P) .. and that has kinda bothered me. What we now need, is a way to play mpeg4/divx and hopefully DVDs. As long as we're not going to get to play our DVDs under linux, we'll still have to boot windows. Currently my windowsbox is restarting about every 2 days, so naturally, this is not something i want to continue running - at least not when it freezes in the middle of playing a DVD (kinda boring when you're watching it together with a couple of good friends on a 3x2meter projector on the wall :-).

Well .. as the story points out in the end, maybe someone should grasp hold of this and try to get something up and running. The man who wrote the article surely had a good point.. We've already tried to do just this. Almost 6 months ago, a friend of mine and I talked about getting all those abandonwarez up for the public where they could get hold of all this stuff. I think that it was after a long discussion about the great Elite II where someone mentioned that he'd never played Elite II .. so he didn't really have anything to say about this. Well, enough about that, we decided to try to do something about it.

~6 months ago i email Sierra - Asking them how they thought about the matters of copyright for the old games - and getting an explicit permission to share out the games - and sharing all information about #s of downloads and alike with sierra. I didn't think much would happen - and it certainly didn't. After about 2 weeks we got an answer from the people we sent the mail to that stated that the mail had been transferred to the right department. And that's about it. We're still waiting. Or .. no, we're not waiting, because we're kinda bored of large companies that doesn't even bother to answer our emails.

I think we'll try snailmail. That might work. ;)
