    Nothing in the foreseeable future can stop a coordinated nuclear attack from Russia, except for the common sense of the Russians, which was shown to be quite present. Even during the cold war, for all the hostilities, they have shown to care enough for their own well-being, and are not suicidal at all.

    As for shooting down Katyusha rockets? (I think they mean "Grad" and "Uragan" systems). All you need to disable this system - is some morning fog. I would not rely on it functioning.

    Overall, IMO, this is cool technology, that can make for some nice congress presentation and a hefty paycheck for R&D (which is always good), but it would be irrelevant in the foreseeable future..

    192.168.x.x is indeed a private subnet, what something behind Linux Firewall/NAT should look like, doesn't it? ATT gives an esentially static IP.

    ..it came back up.. all the IPs, gateway, DNS, trace to my office machine, download rate, ping time stayed EXACTLY the same. Makes me wonder what were they doing all this time.

    Oh, wait.. my IP was changed 2 months ago.. Maybe THAT was the time they switched me?

    Left me wondering - what was the dowtime (three days) for, and what actually changed..

    That's probably cheaper then they paid to the consultants who came up with this graffity idea. Plus all the free publicity of being in the news: now all the country saw this graffity in prime time. I am afraid this is clever enough that we see this marketing done again and again.     Usually object on the sky are referred as having declination, not inclination.. (and right ascension)..

    Also, if you have GPS on GS orbit, they will form an almost straight line - BAD for triangulation, not to mention visibility.

    In short, no, you can not have a GPS system "over China". Journalist was sloppy, and you, likely, a bit sloppy too.. ;-))

    Look here, mathematician.. You can determine the position of the sattelite down to 1m. That means if you have two sattelites 15,000 km away from each other (opposite on orbit) you will completly lose any accuracy when (distance between satellites)/(distance to you) ~ (1m / 15000m), i.e. 225,000,000 km - so being on the mars you will be able to determine that..you are on the Mars.. Not really interstellar.... ;-) in the real world, errors have to be taken into account - but do not worry - look at my post below for a truly global solution.. ;)

    Satellites are low. Just order them not to transmit above that other nation.

    That still leaves the Russian system, but I am not sure it is going to be maintained - probably they may use their expertise to kick start the European system.

    Look it up. Many civilian receivers now come with it. You are wrong.

    But it works only in North America (relevant to the article), and it requires a view of the WAAP satellite - on GS orbit - not always good visibility, especially in towns, there DGPS is needed for corrections..
