It is generally believed that there are significant mineral resources, but these have not yet been commercially exploited. Such deposits include uranium, copper, gypsum, iron, marble, manganese, tin and, perhaps, oil.
So you say what? I always thought It is generally believed != may be
Bush and Co. were there for corporate interests. That's a fact - live with it, what ever the sugar is coating it for general american electorate.
Not that there is anything bad with it - that's the function of the government - to protect business and economy..

Why would anybody care what's behind the event horizon? Or evn if it exists?
Last stable orbit, if you assume this space-time geometry, would be well above it, depending on BH spin, and that's what you see in X, why any assumptions are necessary at all? They can not be tested - you only can test, maybe, whether you have a stable orbit on the inner edge of the disk, and if it does not hit a hard surface..
Black Hole does not necesseraly imply singularity in the center. It only imply the presense of the evnt horizon, what' below it is is not and can not be known. From the point of view of the matter falling into the black hole - it is never crossed, as the time slows down infinitely as you approach it.
So the stae of matter below the horizon has NOTHING to do with properties of the such a compact object above it. This is because of causality - there is no information flow from behind the horizon..
..The only thing I care now - is the noise from the fans. For any non-portable system (and the new imac, is not portable) form factor is a no issue. Its not the tape closet days anymore..
Doing interesting stuff for a time? You mean, dropping good products, laying people off and trying to jump into PC business, cause their CEO reads magazines that say Dell is genious and everybody should be doing like Dell.. And then said CEO just leaves, after ruining the company? Interesting stuff indeed..
If they want a turn around - get the old name back for a start.. It always was Silicon Graphics for me, not a nameless TLA...
Yeah, yeah, I hear you man.. I wrote lotsa Monte Carlo code myself..
Its just the way they market it that ticks me off.. My point - these are not "consumer" solutions..
On the unrelated note - I had one job writing astrnomical image processing code. First, I did it the usual way, using a library floating around in the community. Then I gave it a thought, and wrote my own code based on my old DWT code (that's for discrete wavelet transform it is).. New statistics turned out about 10 to 15 times faster to calculate, and more robust to boot. Yahoo. Use your brains - beat the Moore, man..;-))
..you seriously think that for a majority of applications people have any clue on how to access memory? People write Visual Basic and Java..
Actually - fitting the data you use into L2 cache is much more important IMO.. I have seen factor of 3 improvements in some of my code.. Local alignment (UNder 4k blocks) matters less from my benchmarks..
They have a bunch of IBM mainframes, Unisys NX, AS 400 etc. They had troubles with security in 1989 - from the report by Andersen's auditors. They had troubles with ecurity, backups, procedures in 1994.
More then that, but it is not only dark matter. IIRC, magnetic field energy density (mass) is comparable to the "common" matter and to the radiation energy density..
All sort of crap flying around. Look at your fniger nail. Every 1 second 10,000,000,000 neutrinos pass through it. Aren't you scared?? Thorough your body, through your brain.. And these dumb physicists say it does not interact - what do they know?? Just think about it - feel it..;-))
Dark matter can not be 100% barionic - it is ruled out. Some of it - maybe, dust, dark stars.. All of it in the amount currently believed to be present (from galaxy rotation curves and other simulations and measurement) - no. (I did study the topic for my Ph.D. in physics)
Getting a lot of smart and curious people together and paying them to do something (anything) will yield a lot of good results, that was proven many times over.
Piece of a rubber bumper tore off and stuck in the lock - Russians omn the station moved "Progress" a bit and managed to pull the piece out with a crooked stick.
As the time goes by, we will see more of this russian style problem solving skills, and ISS will look more and more like Mir. That's the law of large technical systems - they get fucked up.
Having worked with aero-sace folks for 12 years (thank god I am out) the only thing that surprises me is that all this shit actually works - it is way to complex for that.. I blame sheer luck.;-)
..Any Laser have a couple of mirrors in it - beam bouncing between them, getting amplified.. They do withstand the beam just fine.
You do not need to protect your mortar shell for too long.
From what I heard - russians made a nice laser system on a tank platform. Used infrared laser, pumpud by an jet engine exhaust. Worked fine, expt for the fact that it is a big fucking stationary target with an awful infrared signature - can be detected and knocked out in a nick of time. It is exposed, and countermeasures are cheap and effective. It is not a fast plane in the sky. It would not work.

Spoken like a true Cromagnon.
OK, smart-ass - check this reference. You can't set even your basic facts staright and try to argue. It really looks pathetic..

Cheap alternative to missile shield.

Just one question: how on earth did you get hired without a clue what to do? What you ask i a standard Q, you ought to know it without us..
All sort of dummies got jobs in the recent years... ;(

Nobody needs it. Nobody. Those who do - will write their own stuff..

We are all doomed.
P.S. That was a joke. But it is disturbing indeed...
BTW - anybody heard of MPEG4 capable components? LIke a DVD+VCD+MPEG4 system? I would by one - hard to rig computer to my theatre..

They are plain lazy fucks.

Oversimplifying popular reports are the bane..
Can you see billions of dollars made and lost in the web craze? Hard to imagine it is just 1991.. ;)
Who new, that a few physicists, trying to login into SLAC library, will code up the U.S first web server, sweaty cosmonauts will need the development of the Gore-Tex, and you will get you ticket by a laser radar.
Fundamental research pays. Many times over.

Would you like to bet your life on clear skies and matte painting on the mortar shell? I would not.

.. I would just love debugging this software.. When QA find one - they are DEAD!! Sweet..
