And because of the new and improved processor that is smaller and runs cooler and more reliably we are announcing a 23% price increase for fall of 2008;)
I would love to know what kind of computer can figure out how to implement anything. A computer is as stupid as a compass or a plumb bob. It doesn't figure anything out on it's own. Through the science of computer programming, which is no less difficult than the science of physics or chemistry, it is up to us as Software Engineers to build applications from detailed requirements docs that must meet stringent levels of quality to the satisfaction of the clients who will use it. You miss a zero here or use the wrong conversion formula there and a billion dollar satelite burns up in the atmosphere, a building collapses, or an bridge ends up in the river. Nobody is going to blaim the computer for not implementing the requirements correctly. So go tell your protractor to implement your next architectual project;)
Mankind has been manipulating genes for thousands of years. Every time two plants are cross polinated or two animals are chosen for breeding based on desirable characteristics we are deliberately selecting what genes are to be passed on. When I see stories like "Is genetically engineered beef safe to eat?" I think are people that stupid? Are you affraid to eat Angus beef? Are you affraid to eat eggs with white shells? Everything you eat has been genetically engineered from what it was in the wild to what it is now. The only fear of genetic engineering is if some undesirable trait gets released into the wild and whipes out those with good traits.
So giving away product increases sales? If the sale price is zero how do you make money? Yes we sold over a million copies of our new book for $0 dollars. After subtracting the cost of printing we earned -$6 million dollars. It reminds me of the SNL skit First CitiWide Change Bank. All we do is make change. How do we make money doing this? Volume.
There are organizations that are run well in IBM but that all depends on who your manager is. I was just talking to my friend again and we were talking about the empires managers try to build up. The more people managers have under them the higher they rise in the organization. They don't care if their people are competent or satisfied. It's all just a numbers game. They let incompetent people stay on too long and they don't do anything to further the careers of those who want to stay and are willing to work the extra hours. I used to have to cover for other team members who didn't even have the skills to do their jobs, but I couldn't get any credit for my work because the customer wanted the team to be local to NY and half our team was in another state. We did the work, they got the credit, and none of us got any raises except the 2 or 3 guys in the NY office. And of course its a circular cycle. Those who get the best performance ratings get the best projects. Those who work on the best projects get the best performance ratings. Repeat. And only the people closest to the manager get to choose the projects they work on. The rest of us always relied on the crumbs that filtered down. And if you want to leave your group and try to get ahead they won't let you. There's always some kind of hiring freeze that prevents you from moving anywhere. I may just sound like a disgruntled employee but I really wanted to stay there and retire but I would never have been able to get off the "bench" as we called it and use the skills that I have. But where I work now I do and I'm very satisfied.
I used to work at IBM and we were REQUIRED to work 10% overtime and every minute of our time had to be billable whether we had any work to do or not. Our raises and bonuses were determined by job performance numbers. If you got a 1 you recieved a nice bonus and a decent raise. If you got a 2 a smaller bonus and raise. And if you got a 3 you were considered average and barely got a cost of living increase. We were told by our managers that only 1 person in each group could get a 1, only 10% were allowed a 2, and the rest would get 3's. So no matter how hard you worked most likely you would get a 3. So why bother putting forth any effort? Why bother working any overtime? And whenever they needed to lay off a bunch of people they called it a Resource Action. IBM employees are just resources to be used up and tossed in the garbage. I have friends who still work there who pray every day to be laid off. At least when that happens they give out nice severence packages. Getting laid off was the best thing that happened to me. Where I work now employees are appreciated and hard work is rewarded.
If what you are asking is for IE to be automatically standards compliant then that means thousands if not millions of pages written to the non-standards will break. The easier alternative is to let it render the old pages the old way and flag the new pages as standard compliant.
In Atlanta there are two types of people, geographically speaking. Those who are ITP (inside the perimeter) and those who are OTP (outside the perimeter). Those who are inside tend to rely on public transit, rely on government infrastructure, and are used to having everything they want at their fingertips without having to go to far out of their way to get it. Those outside are independently mobile, tend to rely on themselves and their families, are used to making do with and appreciating what they have. Those inside are used to being packed together like sardines, living elbow to elbow, yet not even knowing who their neighbors are, and tend to be liberal. Those outside enjoy the space and the nature around them yet know their neighbors well and tend to have conservative family values. I am often asked why I live so far away and accept having to drive an hour to work every day, why don't I live closer to work? And I tell them because then I'd have to live next to you people. While I am an IT worker I don't live and die by IT. My cell phone is just a cell phone. I don't surf the web from my car. And when I get home at night my laptop stays in it's bag and I don't have people texting me and IM'ing me all evening. If I get on the internet it's to check my mail or perhaps buy a book or some music. I don't walk around like some Borg with a blinking blue light in my ear. If I can't get cell service I keep driving til I find a place where I can. What's the hurry? Tech does not make good neighbors. People online tend to be more arrogant and rude because they are anonymous. When you have to see someone face to face on daily basis you have to live with the consequences of your actions. There will always be people who are happy ITP and those who are happy OTP. Tech has nothing to do with it.
I started out in CS before there were libraries that did everything for you. If you wanted to sort a list you had to write the sort yourself and you had to know what it was you were sorting to know which sorting method was most efficient because by God every CPU cycle came with a cost. If you wanted to create a indexed file you had to know what random access meant and what type of tree structure you wanted to use because there wasn't any query language to do the work for you. That was the eductation I got. Now you can write code with a few mouse clicks and have no idea what's really going on in the background. That ain't workin', that's the way you do it. Money for nothin' and your chicks for free!
I had the choice of buying the rerelease of Bladerunner in standard DVD, HDDVD, and Blueray, but that would mean buying all new equipment to play it if I went with the new formats. All of my TV's are now HD and I still don't have digital cable so I watch standard TV and DVD's upscaled to HD. There is nothing on cable that to me would justify doubling the exhorbitant fee I pay every month to the cable company and there is nothing on disc that would justify me buying new players. So I chose the standard DVD edition. Problem solved. When there's finally something worth watching in HD I'll upgrade. HD doesn't improve the quality of the idiotic programs that today qualify as "entertainment".
What's the big deal with social networking anyways? Do you let everyone know every time you take a crap? Social networking is for people who would otherwise stay at home and never hang out with anyone, but thanks to social networking they can be associated with hundreds of people who normally wouldn't give them the time of day. I got tired of managing all of the requests to join networks with former coworkers and people I barely knew so removed myself from all of these social networks and just delete all requests to join. It's just more spam taking up my time.
So when is Apple going to open up and let people run OS X on whatever hardware platform they choose? Why is it OK to tell Microsoft they can't include their own browser in their OS and yet Apple can tell you you must by their hardware to run their OS? Windows and OS X are both very restrictive.
If one day we learn to create life in a test tube are we proving that life on earth evolved on its own or are we proving that as in the test tube life was created by design by an intelligent being? We have not proven or disproven anything.
I remember the day I switched to Vonage. I remember with great satisfaction opening the access panel in my ceiling and yanking the phone cable out of the junction box and plugging in my Vonage cable. And last spring I enjoyed even more ripping up 45 feet of buried phone cable while doing some landscaping. I don't care if Vonage has to raise their prices to the same rate or higher than the regular phone companies. Screw them. Why do so many people belong to Netflix when there's a Blockbuster just down the street that you can also rent by mail? Because we remember all the times we took it in the shorts for late fees. The only reason they're lowering prices and renting online is because of Netflix. If Netflix goes away we're back to being screwed again. The telco's have sucked for too long and will never get better without real competition. I hope Vonage sticks around. Hell I even prefer my MetroPCS service to AT&T. I can barely get reception in my house and there are lots of places I can't get service but by God I'd rather pay $30 bucks a month to the little guy than get reamed with overages, at least everything's unlimited on MetroPCS.
And once everyone has an assigned number no one will be able to buy or sell anything without their digital sign embedded in their skin. Cue Horsemen...
95% of greenhouse warming is caused by water vapor, which means less than 5% is caused by all other sources, such as carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), and other gases (CFC's, etc.). If you eliminate CO2 from the list then CO2 looks huge in comparison to the remaining causes of greenhouse warming, but in fact it's role in the big picture is dwarfed in comparison to water vapor. Of the 3.6% caused by CO2, 3.5% is naturally occuring, which means that humans contribute only.1% and for water vapor we contribute only 0.001%. If all human causes were eliminated the reduction in greenhouse gases would be no more than 0.28%. The effect on global climate would be insignificant. So if water vapor contributes 95% and CO2 less than 5% why are we trying to replace CO2 emissions with water vapor? If everyone switched to hydrogen power we'd be contributing more to global warming than we are now. Not to mention all the energy that would be required to produce the hydrogen. It takes electricity to split hydrogen and oxygen. Where does that electricity come from? Power plants that produce what? CO2 and water vapor. There are always alternatives but at least choose one that makes sense.
And because of the new and improved processor that is smaller and runs cooler and more reliably we are announcing a 23% price increase for fall of 2008 ;)
Who do you like best? Hannah Montana or Miley Cyrus? The great debate is on! ;)
- Gottlieb made great pinball tables
Great! Now I can print all of my Hannah Montana concert pics in 3D!

Yeah, February 4th 2007, that was the day the internet died. I remember it like it was yesterday... Now where did I put my teeth? ;)
I have a virtual lien on my virtual house! Where will my virtual kids live? When will the virtual government step in to save us!

Simply send T-1000's into Iraq. If it moves, kill it!
The printer costs $200. The printer cartridges cost $2 million dollars. :)
