    Not properly dispensing overtime pay is not the same thing as slavery,

    Yours is one of many posts saying the same thing (and getting +5 insightful).

    Why are you guys focusing on bashing the headline instead on the actual problem, which is that highly skilled people are working over time for nothing?

    This IS a serious problem because,
    - It is so common in the industry that there aren't lots of alternatives.
    - The more they work the more others (even in other countries) are forced to work.
    - Quitting is not a serious option unless you are rich and work for sport.

    I would argue that it authorizes everyone to use it. To draw an analogy, it isn't just leaving your front door unlocked, it's leaving it unlocked and putting up a sign that says "Please come in!". So I don't see how accessing an open access point is a officially a crime.
    Fair enough. For then and following your own analogy, when you use someone else's connection you should behave as when you are in someone's house.
    For example, when you visit someone you obviously are going to be with them, and they are going to see what you do.
    Would it be OK if I had this running, and therefore could listen to your conversations?

    They make the fundamental decision to deliberately cause civilian casualties when they refuse to abide by the Geneva Convention and fight in uniform, away from civilian population centers.
    The "insurgents" is what is left after the invasion. Do you expect these people to first get a proper uniform and then get to fight with whatever they have left? Organize and then give you a call, so you can meet someplace and fight?

    Now it's great that you got a +5 insightful by making it sound like the soldiers are minding their own business and fighting in a neutral place following a rulebook everyone is supposed to have read.

    Kidding aside, my first thought was this is CLEARLY a router problem.
    Obviously. Anyway they'd better fix it soon because a customer with no internet connection and no way to fix the problem online is a pissed off customer.

    I love Google Earth but I think they should revisit their decision of replacing new images with older ones if they have better resolution.

    I'm sure that's a good decision but a city like New York, but in areas recently developed it just doesn't make sense.

    Dude, that greeting line is typical for a slashdot user whose user ID is between 10,000 and 50,000 (ask any decent HR department if you don't believe me).

    Had you mentioned it, you would have made a friend forever (at the risk of becoming someone's best and only friend, though).

    BTW: "You are an idiot." may sound like an insult, but from time to time it's just an accurate diagnosis :-)

    Not sure why public perception would be like that, since the vast majority would actually own a mac and upgrades truly would just work.
    Yes, but pissed off people make more noise than happy customers. Some would rather rant in a blog and submit links everywhere than admit that their purchase wasn't that clever.

    I'm sure it's gonna take Apple seconds to upgrade their OS so that it refuses to work on these things.

    ..but if they do, public perception of Leopard might go from 'just works' to 'upgrades may be fatal'. So no wonder they may want these units to not ship at all even if technically it would be trivial to render them into regular PCs.

    BTW, how hard would it to hack this "EFI V8 emulator" into any PC that uses the same parts?

    Not when it affects those in society. Ie, if you overdose and cannot afford health insurance, are rushed to the ER and tax payer money pays for your treatment and recovery, then it is our business.
    This is a dangerous road. Do you want to deny treatment to lung cancer patients that smoke for example?

    Fact is, almost everyone takes risks in their life and everyone expects to be helped even if those risks end badly.

    Now, if it's everybody for themselves, then please stop taxing me for education (I don't have kids), roads (I'm happy using the subway) and so on.

    So, it's bad and evil and wrong if a computer at your ISP reads all your packets for marketing research purposes, but when Slashdot's favourite pet company Google does the exact same thing with all your messages in Gmail, it's perfectly fine and justified?
    Yes. You may use gmail or not, and if you do then you agree that they will use your email contents for advertisement.

    No one authorized ISPs to inspect packets for any purpose.

    However if they provided their service at the same price google offers gmail in exchange for authorization to inspect packets, I'm sure there would be lots of people willing to take the deal.

    I think Slashbots need to get their kneejerks straight.
    And I think whoever modded you insightful was on crack.
