I've actually seen a decent system built like this. No speed demon, but that's not what you asked for. It was >1gb & had decent specs, for $299 (or $399).
It even looked a bit like the old c=64s...
We can expect displays that will be encased in a big wood console.
I know you say that like it's bad, but I have seen some case mods where they redid their case/monitor/keyboards in a nice woodgrain, and they are super-stylin'. I've thought about it more than once...
Secondly, UWB seems to be the holy grail of wireless networking, yes, however is this something that the agencies of the world are going to let out of the bag so easily as he says, I can think of the CIA and the NSA having a few choice words about such "undetectable signals" being used by commonfolk after September 11th...
At least they *tell* you it's undetectable... I'm sure the TLAs would be happy to let you know what's "secure" from them. Now we can all feel safe & continue in complete privacy.
Comon... nice hack, but, get up and walk outside for a while.:-)... Thats all...
The hack is the point, not cooling. The cooling is just the excuse. I bet if you checked out the rest of his system, his case is modded, his kb is, & he's water-cooling his overclocked processor.
While I dig case mods, I'm kinda surprised to see it here. There's no politics involved. I guess the "gaming abuse" aspect covers it. Go figure...
I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not, but I'll pretend not.
One of the strongest selling points for cable over dsl is the theoretical higher bandwidth. When I first got cable (RR), I sometimes reached 6-7Mbps. I've watched performance decline steadily to it's present level, 300k.
I'm moving in a week, worst time of the year for it. I'm going to wait & see what the performance is like in the new place, and if it isn't any better, I'm switching to dsl. The cable performance is really spotty in Memphis, so location makes a big difference. Hopefully I won't have to switch.
Speaking for myself, I don't want to keep the kids from copying the bubble-gum stuff and throwing it all around the school. I want the market for that to dry up, because the whole concept of a manufactured youth-culture is destructive to society as a whole and it deserves to be destroyed.
That's all well & good. I bet you don't have a daughter who loves Britney Spears (& I just found out her new album, purchased as a xmas gift, is on the fatchucks.com list).
My daughter *loves* Britney. My initial reaction was "ugh, please, no." But you know what the difference between her and us? She doesn't pre-judge (hmm, prejudice?) bands because they're manufactured, or popular. She likes to listen to what she likes. Britney Spears, yes. But also a lot of the bands I like. Sleater-Kinney, Slant 6, Veruca Salt, Bikini Kill, Subteens, Kiss-Offs, Donnas. *Not* your typical mainstream crap.
So I decided to treat her music the way I treat her religion. I let *her* decide what she wants to listen to (I do screen for extreme content, she's 5). I might not like some of the stuff she does, but she doesn't like everything I do so that makes us even.
Note to anyone else who might decide to d/l a couple of Britney Spears videos off Morpheus for a younger child. Be sure to preview them before you let them get to them. About half are really pornos in disguise. Luckily I thought of it in time:)
I think you've got the concept of a "normal" home network wrong. I'm constantly working on my home LAN, tweaking it, breaking it, fixing it. Most of the work I do is required because *I* broke it. That's my idea of fun. Sue me.
I've set up more than a couple of home LANs for sw developers, grandparents (!), and other "clueless" households with more than one PC. Mostly you set them up the first time (& their auto-update AV sw) & they're good to go. On the rare occasion I get a call, a reboot usually fixes it. After the 2nd "rebootable" problem, I remind them to reboot *before* calling me. Now my calls usually get 5 min. in & tell them they need to call their ISP. And that's rare. (Note: these are my personal service calls, not those of my employers. They get paid in $$$, I get paid in home-cooked meals)
Understand, I loathe pulling cable. If these doohickeys will perform at least half as good as 10baseT they'll be a viable solution for those who just want a simple home LAN & aren't trying to host CS servers or mirror slashdot.org . And I won't have to pull the d@*& cable. Anyone who is serious about their network won't use them, but I doubt that's their intended customer.
Anyway, what I've always thought would be a cool feature is an option for slightly faster video playback - maybe around 10 percent. That would trim 6 minutes off of every hour of programming. It surely wouldn't be very hard for TiVo (et al) to implement. And it probably wouldn't even be that noticable.
Um. Maybe I'm just tired, but I don't exactly understand why you'd want to do this. Do you mean that you want a viewable fast forward? I don't have a PVR (or a VCR), but I can't imagine you can't view it 2x+.
I keep reading your post and seeing this little guy sitting on the couch wearing his pajamas, watching tv at 5am. Pissed off he missed 3 hrs. of tv because he had to sleep. Eating his cereal really fast to be sure he catches the new commercial they have for "Good Morning America", he has this brainstorm. Record 24/7 on a PVR, but get this. Play it back slightly faster. That way you can watch a full 24 hrs. of tv, and still get to sleep.
And your vow to your father, made back when you were a young man of 15, "I'll sit on this couch watching tv for the rest of my LIFE if I want to!!!!" can finally become a reality.
Wow, I really am tired. But man, that whole story just popped into my head. Go figure.
How about harnessing that heat somehow. It seems to me that the problem isn't the heat, it's the energy waste. Like maybe hook your water-cooling setup into your water heater or something.
Although I do generally tend to sneer at "green" houses that basically just do that.
Now that I think about it, there was a project to turn your pc into a still, but the link http://exaflop.org/docs/x86still/ doesn't seem to work.
Um, not to try and flame you or anything, but did you even read the text? If you had, I would think you'd be making this comment elsewhere, if at all. And somehow I don't think/. is the appropiate place to volunteer...
Well, not exactly. The first thing that popped in my mind was "what about the majority of linux companies". Although it's not properly warez, it's still a situation where most people d/l the software for free.
(note to self: after, thankfully, proof reading that post, remember that typos can easily happen when one isn't paying attention, so be tolerant of others' mistakes)
I'd just like to say I'm shocked and appalled that not one single/.er has said anything about using one in conjuction with (insert whatever game machine is currently booting Linux) and using it to hack on the kernel source in the back of the car. Oh, yeah, and usb wireless nics will allow them to surf the net through the chain of all the wireless nics in all the cars. Hey! A beowolf cluster! rotflmoa, I slay me...
I hope they redesign the whole thing. A large part of the design of the current iMac is due to the CRT, they had to work around it. This should allow a bit more flexibility.
Note: I don't currently own a mac (well, I have an old, old powerbook I don't use. One button touchpad w/ X, eww), I'm too poor. If it were me, I'd put the lcd on the side of a mid-tower design, spiffed up, of course. The think that bugs me the most about the current iMac is the depth of the box.
It looks like the file browser in the open box uses IE.
I found that when I upgraded to IE6 on the 2 win boxes I use (win2k & 98se), file open dialogs became unbearably slow. Not "go get a cup of coffee" slow, but "take a couple of bites of donut" slow. Uninstalling ie6 & going back to 5.5sp? fixed it. So, yah. As a non-programmer, I'd agree w/ you there:)
If you don't like listening to the true, unadulterated source, well, I guess tubes are for ya! Me, I like to hear what the musician played, so I buy transistor/fet based equipment.
Most of the musicians I know refuse to play through anything except tube amps, and you can definitely tell when they don't. I don't care as long as it heats my (soundproofed) basement...
However after attempting to teach myself Spanish for 6 months I still couldn't hold even a basic conversation (and I had a year of spanish a few years back). Once I learn spanish I won't have much a head start should I need to learn Russian or Chinese. Learning those two wouldn't give me much advantage if I need Hebrew.
That's why I learned Latin (disclaimer: aeons ago). It's the basis for all the Romance languages, and is surprisingly helpful for ones that aren't. Even a rudimentary understanding of Latin helps. Although I consider myself an English-only type of person, I can usually get the gist of most (written) languages.
I wonder what Linus is thinking of doing if his employer goes.
Get another job. I doubt he'd have any trouble. Whatever company he decides to work for will be instantly popular w/ the ever-vocal Linux users. Personally, I think it'd be the most fun if he went to work for Microsoft. Just think of all the heads that would explode. "Linux Rules! Windows sucks! But wait, Linus works for MS, so they can't be all bad. No! MS is evil! Arg!!!"
As for concern about digital-only storage, this concern is well-founded too. How do you recover the data when readers for the media are no longer available? Seen any 8" floppies lately? How about 5.25"? The cost of...
Well, I saw both 8" floppy drives & 5.25"s today. We try to keep 2 or 3 (at least one) spare units around when they fall from grace. If I'm not mistaken, there's even a couple of RLL/MFM controllers in there.
Hey, you must work here! Seriously, here they have the majority of the programmers supporting the old DOS product, and have a couple of guys trying to port it to winxx. They've only been working on the port for 3+ yrs, so I don't know what's taking so long...
They do have a kick@55 salesman, though. Obviously they must, since he can still sell that old DOS version...
Well, I started out reading the first HP book to my daughter at bedtime. I found myself continuing to read long after she fell asleep. Just because it's a children't book doesn't mean it isn't interesting, or well written. They aren't all like the Hardy Boys. Pretty much if you're into fantasy books at all you'll like it.

I had some fleeting thoughts about posting a flame-inducing rant here about the unsustainable nature of "free" stuff (news outlets, software, ketchup, take your pick)
You know, I've noticed that they no longer have stuff like ketchup & mild sauce in the bins at fast food restaurants anymore. & I just thought it was going to suck to have to start buying all my sauces.

That was probably modded up "funny" for a reason...
You mean providers. I think they said they have 3 distinct providers. 3 pipes, at least...

You could mount a remote drive (I think using NFS) for logging, which IIRC is supposed to be the "right" thing to do for supersecure boxes.
