Would it even need to be rewritable? Most tech comes out initially w/ read-only/write once (CD, DVD) drives, with recorders or rerecorders (I guess that should ahve been rewriters) priced way out of reach for Joe Schmoe. But the prices come down & they become readily available. Besides, what was it? 10tb? With that kind of space you'd rarely *need* to erase anything.

I worked in an arcade for 3 yrs., way back before I was into computers. I will say that the pinball maintainance was one of the "chores" that no one liked. It wasn't that difficult if you had an ounce of common mechanical/electrical sense, but it was extremely time consuming. Mostly the cleaning & waxing the deck. It had to be done at least twice a week, and could take up to an hour for each machine. The video games were easier, but required replacement parts more often. The joysticks & buttons on the video games received a lot more use/abuse than the pinball machines. Surprisingly enough, most people who play pinball machines are affectionadoes (sp?), and respect them, and therefor tend to treat them a little nicer.

Then I'd just about have to agree. He's not saying they invented the internet (yet), just the revolution. And not many people knew about Linux & Open Source before Redhat "legitimized" it. Once again, the parallels between RH & MS are scary, but maybe I'm just pessimistic...

It wasn't *too* bad once it got booted, but I had to remove it. I never could get the video just right, and I have 2 nics which it flat out hated. As much a pain dual-boot is, it isn't that bad. Well, NetWare 5 *does* have an X server. It sucks, but they have it. I've always been pleased by the NetWare connectivity in Caldera's OpenLinux. The company I work for resells an accounting package for small businesses, and in the past we've only supported it on NetWare. We have no plans to upgrade our servers or our customers servers to NW5. It's big and bulky and tries too hard to compete with MS (everything for everyone). I've been doing informal testing with COL, as a means to replace NW, and it works well. I'd personally like to see Caldera and Novell get *much* closer, and phase NetWare out completely.

We're pretty much to that point now. Unless you purchase new CPUs, etc. every 6 months, it doesn't make much sense to upgrade. The motherboard you purchased 18 months ago might support a CPU 3 times as fast as your current one, but by the time you get ready to upgrade you'll have a hard time finding an "obsolete" CPU to fit in it. Not to mention RAM (pc66, pc100, pc133), hard drives (ata66), video (AGP, ok, that's been awhile but none of my MBs support it & it's getting harder to find PCI cards.), heck, even video cams are mostly USB. It's cheaper nowadays to just buy a new system.

I don't blame them. Thats just what they were taught.
    -------------------------------
In my experience, ctrl-alt-del is the first step in troubleshooting a MS problem. Fixes 85% of the problems. What else can you do, reinstall? Remember, it's difficult to act intelligently when working with a brain-dead OS. When you have to reboot after changing display res or changing the DNS server or anything, wouldn't you reboot for just about anything? That's the second most reason I'm getting out of MS (& Novell) work. The first is that I'm tired of telling customers, "I'm sorry, that's because it's an MS product," and "I agree, MS Office and Win9x *should* work better together, but they don't."

ps. My company just sent me to a fiber-optics cert course, but decided the hands-on section was too expensive. Great course, I now know all the theory behind working w/ FO, but couldn't shear/polish a fiber to save my life.
