Ultra high electric field initiated photodisintegration. When will the NCC-1701-D be upgraded with one of these?

Maybe they made such a big deal about it to get more Government funding? Lot'$ of taxpayer buck$ out there in the Homeland $ecurity biz.

Conspicuous Hustle - A trick one of my former Chief Engineers used to make it look like he was doing something when the so called problem / issue was a no brainer. He'd make it look like a big deal, set up a "Tiger Team", expended lots of resources, got more budget, manpower, lots of visability, etc. and became the "Hero that saved the project". This was when I worked for a military contracting company in the late '80s. The Chief Engineer was later put on "Special Projects" and fired. He had lied to the customer (USAF) during a critical design review and exposed. I'll never forget when his "Dog Robber" was helping him pack up to leave.

  3. Still use film... on CNet Tracks the History of the Digital Camera · · Score: 1

I like my digital cameras but my film cameras still get plenty of use. For astrophotography using cooled digital SBIG CCD sensors on my Takahashi TOA-130 APO and Celestron CGE 1100 with the capability to stack multiple images is the only way to go. Computer controlled, sitting inside snapping images in my office at my PC with autoguide over the net... Beats the old film days of freezing my butt off, sensitizing/loading the film and playing games with the developing. Yuk. On the other hand, when out in the field doing outdoor photos I still love film, particularly B/W, getting harder to find though. Sure digital is fast and fun but I can't play Ansel Adams...

  4. Re:missile silos on Data Centers in Strange Places · · Score: 2, Interesting

I have done quite a bit of research on using them. I had the idea to use it for hot sites, data storage and other DR related. One of the main problems is environmental. Old Titan II silos are FULL of asbestos and other carcinogens (PCB's). There is a very large cost to cleanup, drain, and refurbish the infrastructure. Much more than the purchase price. I found one in eastern Washington near major fiber optic lines, power and transportation that was ideal (with LOTS of work and $$$). If I had a 10-20+ million for purchase / startup (environmental impact studies, engineering studies, etc.) and good investors I might have had a go at it.

I'm 51, a boomer and would have to disagree with you totally. Been there, done that. I've been using computers since I was 13 (big iron). Try to take the credit "Gen-X" but that's a joke. I started with an IMSAI, Kim-1, and my first pre built PCs were an Apple-II, TRS-80 and Pet. I've been online since the using ARPNET, Compuserve, email and bbs's since the 70's. Heck, my Dad was using a TRS-80 at home and later a Color Computer by 1982. He was 36 years older than me. Plenty of Apple-II's, TRS-80's, Pets, Atari 400/800's etc. were bought by common folk for a cost SIGNIFICANTLY less than a car before the IBM-5150 came out (the so called "PC"). There was pretty decent market for commodity home computers by then. I've owned ALL of them (and MANY more) since and I am/was not a rich person. Gen X/Y'ers may be reaping the rewards, claming credit but our bucks and acceptance of using technology / science paved the way for your toys...

Actually I keep them (the collectable ones) in binder boxes w/a mothball in plastic bags, then in bankers boxes on shelves. Last time I moved it ('96) was probably 1/3 of the weight. I also have years of guitar magazines, bluegrass magazines / newspapers , topographic maps and spelunking journals. Then there is the books, mostly paperback not to mention a few tons of electronics (from 1920 on), computers and parts. My sister back east in NC has over 10,000 SciFi books and pulp magazines (many mine). She has a whole storage shed full, cataloged and shelved. I have no garage, just a warehouse. My five kids are gonna have fun when I die...

I received many of these emails that my access would be denied to Monster unless I installed the app. Yeah right, like I'm an idiot. Let's install some unknown crap on my PCs... I wanted to forward the emails to Monster's fraud unit but never could find any address on their site to email them to. I looked a long time too, I mean a loooooong time. Nothing but useless FAQ's. If they published a fraud address to forward them to for investigation it might have stopped a lot sooner. I get phishing emails all of the time for Ebay / Paypal on my domains and forward them. They respond (probably automated) but at least they find out in a timely fashion. Monster seems to be pretty lame security wise. Makes you wonder if their security folks have won any Irish lotteries or helped out that poor Nigerian woman collect her millions?
