his reference to fps meant first person shooters. but to answer your question: either run a timedemo: from console when you first start up type "timedemo 1" then "demo q3demo01" (or is it q3demo001??) that will benchmark it. or while playing type in the console "/cg_drawFPS 1" and that will put a counter in the upper right hand corner, showing you realtime frames per second
Slashdot seems to be the first one to report this. i went lookin for mirrors and bluesnews hasnt even posted about it yet. neither have any of the other quake news sites
You ever had a dog that likes to steal food off your plate? A good way to make him stop is poor some hot sauce all over some food, leave were he can get to it, and leave the room for a while. when you come back, the dog will be quite unhappy.
if you let someone get burned by their own bad habits, it is sometimes enough to break them of those habits.
the article is a bit sarcastic.... at least thats how i read it.
Honestly, Q3A runs better in Win98 than in NT. I have a dual celeron box (w/ a TNT2 ultra), and even with "r_smp 1" in NT, it's slower than '98. Q2 was unplayable in NT due to the sound problems. Although, I believe that "issue" was more pronounced for me due to my soundcard (sbpci128).
I would say that Q3A runs as fast in Linux, (on my machine) as it does in NT.
Win2k seems to be a bust so far. I haven't had a good experience with it yet. Though it seems like the best gaming OS for those of us with Dual CPU's, we will have to wait and see.
On the Linux front, I am keeping my fingers crossed for Xfree 4. Until then... i have to keep booting into 98(lite) for games.
I think you are only looking at the "out-of-the-box" KDE desktop. And thats being shortsighted.
The possibilities are nearly infinite, in regards to the customizations you can make. That is the real beauty of it. Yes the "stock" KDE is a lot like Windoze, and I am sure that was intentional. Why? So the new users aren't scared off. Your basic user expects a computer to look like windoze, with a similiar feel and features.
So if ya dont like it... change it. At least you have that option.
yeah and all the rit graphics students are easy frags. There to busy looking at the textures.:)

i for one care very much about both (superbowl and computers). Wasnt it during the superbowl that the (in)famous Apple commercial was shown? Seems like no matter what the product its still a good time to make an impression.
power outages, atm machines gone crazy, sewage treatment plants overflowing.... yadda yadda yadda. In my building the worst thing that may happen is the desktops will think its 1900 (until i go around and manually set them)
lets face it kids, y2k is just big media hype.
i was doing research into y2k issues with our suppliers and one had a very simple policy:
"No matter what happens on January 1st, we will still be able to bill you. Pencil and paper made it through the last millenium change, and we see no reason to think this one will be different."
err nevermind, i tried the riva glx (from nvidia's page)and it worked, though not very well. got some nasty looking texture problems...
hmm cant get it to run on mine... care to tell me which driver ya used?

i am only pulling 20kb/s on my roadrunner :(
i can't say that sandpiper has been slashdotted, cause when the win32 version was released, i was only getting 5kb/s
so much for "unlimited" bandwidth

I recall reading in an interview (Romero??) that in the original storyline of quake, Id named the final Boss "Quake". thus the name.
Thats if my memory serves me correctly...
