If a human cannot control their urges, it's got nothing to do with video games.
I've been playing video games since age 11 and I have no urge to be violent against other people because of that - I'm more likely to get violent as a result of driving to work !
So, the only brain stimulation they noticed was motor co-ordination - what ?
What kinds of games were these kids playing ?
Even the simplest game of 'Pong' requires some sort of mind activity aside from motor skills.
Rig me up another survey please - the government wants results !
Lets say most 'wealthy folk' have an ebook viewer of whatever format.
If a book I want to lend to a buddy is only available in 'ebook' format, how would I transfer that book so he can read it ?
The answer - unless I break the law, I couldn't !
Lets face it, people 'trade' books all the time - some of the best books I've read have been borrowed from friends - some of the best books never seem to have a permanent home.
Take a look at your bookshelf and try to figure out exactly where each book came from - I can bet a good percentage are borrowed (or never returned library books:)
You can bet your ass that whatever format is decided on, you will not be able to 'share' a book with a buddy - they will have to shell out bucks to read it legally.
After looking at the images for some time, I suddenly noticed something rather strange, so I zoomed right in and enhanced the image, here's the result:-
After reading the entire thread - well, at least the ones I thought were insightful, interesting or funny, it seems obvious that it will not happen.
Whether it does or not is a moot point anyway - it's an OS that was geared toward a certain market, as was x86.
imho, at this moment in time (very generalised):-
MacOS = high end DTP, Video/Sound editing etc.
x86 = office, server, low end DTP, video/sound etc.
The lines are very blurred right now and the above is a very general breakdown - the lines will continue to blur, of that there is no dought. They will blur more and more as new markets open and new innovations are made - specialisation is the key factor.
Let us not forget, the home/soho computer market is incredibly young - it has happened in my short lifetime.
OSx on x86 ? - who cares - it's just a dream for OS dabbling addicts !
The real factor here is consumer choice - a specialist product that is cost effective and exactly suits a clients needs.
Tailor made computers for the individual - we are so close to that right now, yet so far away.
Screw the different operating systems and the hardware that goes with them, I want a computer that does what I ask of it, that is tailored to MY specific needs, that doesn't crash or cost a damn fortune, that doesn't require constant upgrades in a never-ending cycle of cash output.
Computer Utopia....
(this is so way off topic - I must really go easy on my evening wine intake)
Idea Man: "Hey guys, for our next project, lets combine an 8gig hard-drive and a nvidia card, chuck out all the useless word-processing and email stuff and call it a console !"
The Guys: "Whee ! - sounds like a great idea !"
Idea Man: "Yeah, after that, maybe we can add a web-browser and the ability to download updates and add-ons !"
When I was visiting the UK in December it was kinda creepy - literally everywhere I went from small town to city, was under CCTV.
The motorways are under CCTV - they can apparently track a vehicle from one end of britain to the other.
And lets not forget the satellite surveilance that covers the entire country...
I think it's plain wrong - sure, maybe in parking lots or near banks, but on the high-street of a little town ?
And now DNA tracking for the innocent - there's got to be a backlash against this by the British public, trouble is, they are all so complacent sitting in front of there media 'goggle-boxes' - many can't afford to eat properly, but they've all got 2 or 3 TV sets !
I'm glad I live in a country where it's possible to 'disappear':)
Oh yes, I remember, it's something you need to do that will take you 3 times longer than planned to do, lose your profit margin because of that lost time all so that 10% of web surfers can see your site, just so all the fancy animations, graphics and drop down menus will help you sell Monkey Nuts.
On a more serious note, I think ASP blows donkey-dick, so who gives an oxymoron anyway !
I feel your pain, I really do - I'm also a webpage designer.
I've given up on netscape for complex graphical designs (eye candy) - if it renders all over the place, screw it - I've spent 4 years developing web pages and it seems 2 of those were spent trying to get netscape to do what I want it to do.
There's no catching up with developments though, no way a set of standards can be truly hammered down when the technology is continuously advancing or changing directions - when todays best thing becomes yesterdays news.
The best that can be done is an orginisation like the WC3 - they don't 'invent' the code, they 'watchdog' it and try and steer it toward some form of common standard - an inenviable task.
Just when you think your getting to grips with DHTML & CGI, along comes XML - nothing wrong with that, it's progression.
This brings me back to topic - you've got to create slightly different versions of your code to 'fit' as many browsers as possible with the minumum amount of effort.
Netscape 1 pixel out on a layer ? - use some Javascript browser detection to force it into place without effecting other browsers or say 'screw it, there's only 14 people and some confused geriatric floridians using netscape anyway'
Luke: Wohooo, Gung-ho, Wohooo I just wet my pants and I'm not the least bit annoying. Obiwan: Ar, Och i tha noo - gimme some herion ye wee trainspotter, ahm getting vast sums ah money for acting like a hack. Yoda: Burp, eat my carboard actors monkey boy, the special effects team didn't get to me, I look like a freakin muppet.
Yes, but will shooting SWEII on Digital prevent it from being as totally crap and overhyped as the last pile of steaming wookie turd that morons queued up for hours to see and pretended they liked ?
Yet another example of the marketing muscle of m$ that is so powerful and innovative that it's damn scary.
Forget the fact that it's taken m$ 5 years to release a semi-stable OS out the box (win2k) to replace NT4 - it's the sheer force of the marketing that is so hard to stop - or, to put it another way, the $ in m$
They poke and pry into every single corner and opportunity they can find that may still return it's weight in $
Third world markets - m$ is there.
Student courses - m$ is on the ball.
Threats - m$ will eat try to make you eat your own shorts
Emerging technologies - m$ want's to eat them too.
Any sign of marketable weakness in the competition - yummy
You've gotta hand it to the m$ marketing team - they're the S in scumbags, but the $ in dollars.

Once again, I reckon it depends what line of work your in.
Printing
========
We've got a large epson A2 colour printer at work which can output Poster quality artwork if needs be.
I've tried connecting to this printer using win32 with limited success - it's attached to a Mac. I've tried connecting to it via Linux (admitedly with limited experience) with not much success.
All the software on that Mac is geared toward high-quality print design work - Graphics done in Quark Express or Freehand, drivers explicity written for these kinds of applications.
All the printing companies in the industry of graphic design are on Mac (and some win32 i386) - linux is not something they've considered, let alone heard of.
None of this software is open source at present.
The best OS for the job of high quality print work ? - MacOS !
If all you want is, for example, a print out of a website - heck, Linux can do the job just as well as win32 or MacOS !
Sound
=====
It depends entirely what sort of 'arena' your in when you talk 'sound' - do you just use sound for games or mp3 files, are you an amateur musician or is sound editing and manipulation your job ?
If it's your job, you are more than likely going to be using MacOS or Win32.
If you just want to listen to MP3 files or play games, Linux is fine !
Linux, imho, is more geared toward networking and programming
That said, a default install of some of the latest Linux distros kick the win32 default installs butt in terms of options and power.

Nuff said matey - get your facts right first or keep your cakehole closed.
Yes, they can be damn irritating when you get some loud mouth blower walking around totally oblivious to everyone else.
But they have become as useful as they are irritating - in fact, for marketing type suits they are permanently stuck to thier ears and are therefore invaluable to them.
As an emergency device, it's a big bonus (provided your battery aint flat) - if your stuck in the middle of nowhere with a broken down car, you can call for help (assuming the network is available where you are). This can work both ways tho - you can track the location of someone with a cellphone pretty easily, so if you plan to become a fugitive, a cellphone is not on your top 10 list of useful stuff.
It looks like cellphone usage is not that big in the US, or SMS messaging - in Europe it's massive.
In South Africa, despite our economical situation, even school kids have them - my work colleagues 9 year old son has one.
Even the less fortunate over here can afford a cellphone - it truly is communication for the masses. For the really impoverished people, small business / shacks have been setup where people pay a small fee to make a call on cellphone technology - now that's enterprise and is making there lives better because of it (our local landlines can't always be relied upon)
So think before you dismiss the technology like that, America is just another country in the world whether you yanks want to admit it or not !
I will attempt to poison your minds with pure layman bullshit, as perveyed by 'geek-illiterate' t-shirt dwellers :-
Virtual hosting !
I mean, what do you want, a slice of highway on your freakin' doorstep !
Doos !
Give me a break - isn't this why 'virtual' hosting was introduced ?
Next thing you'll be saying you want your own strip of highway to put outside your house, linking your ass to every asshole in history.
Erm, I don't get this ? So printing your digital photos is not an option ? :)
What a pile of horse-crap that survey is.
Humans have been violent since day one.
If a human cannot control their urges, it's got nothing to do with video games.

Pah !
Hmm, that explains why I was always tired after those school cross-country runs !
We'd actually traversed an entire country !
Gosh, how Anal of me not to notice...
True, but the technology will become such that an ebook will be as legible as paper.
I'm all for keeping printed books myself.
They said many years back (the eternal 'they') that computers would do away with paper.
Bwahh hahah - well, here I sit in front of my computer with about 4000 bits of paper in various formats all around me.
some of my work colleagues print out there email !
ebook - bleh - it'll be a good long while before it replaces paper, if ever.
Hyperthetical Suituation :-
:)
Lets say most 'wealthy folk' have an ebook viewer of whatever format.

That sucks.
I hope ebooks don't become the norm in my time.

This kinda CRAP makes me sick, someone
pissing away ideas when the world need
um like YOUR business.
Pleh, Gwarrrr !
Caff Koff, Stick it in your cavity mommys-boy !
You tell enough people why they should worry about tagged devices, they'll care !
There's little enough privacy in the modern world already.
They'll be tagging the entire population soon from birth - zing - in goes a little chip - your tagged baby, but it's for your own security, honest !
Well, it's simple really, isn't it ?
This will create a market for products that aren't 'tagged'
If the public are educated and informed of this invasion of privacy, then product sales will take a dive.
I certainly won't be buying any Sony or Motorola products if they 'tag' them.
After reading the entire thread - well, at least the ones I thought were insightful, interesting or funny, it seems obvious that it will not happen.

Oh, I forgot, you come from that 'tech-savvy' mecca called the states where they can't even count votes properly.
