  2. Re:Why Not for Linux? on Fresh Air For Windows? · · Score: 2, Insightful

You still run into the problem of either:

A.) You need to make Linux or WINE 100% Windows API-compliant, including Direct X support for gamers who would otherwise make the switch (good luck with that short of Microsoft actually granting unrestricted access to full documentation of the APIs and/or source code; neither of which I would ever expect to happen). On top of this, you would have to devise a fool-proof way of installing legacy Windows apps either natively or under WINE. By "fool-proof" I mean "as easy as installing it on Windows" not "hack this .rc file, modify these environment variables and add such-and-such directory to your $PATH".

B.) Proprietary software vendors writing their applications for Linux and wrestling with both the implications of working with Open Source code and licensing and trying to DRM their products at the same level they do for Windows, the latter of which would meet with *major* resistance from the Open Source community.

Scenario B shouldn't be a show-stopper over the long-term, but I think it will prevent any major migration to open source platforms from Windows until people stop seeing Windows as The Only Choice (TM).

  3. Re:For the readers from Europe ... on 35 Articles of Impeachment Introduced Against Bush · · Score: 5, Informative

IANACL (I am not a Constitutional lawyer) but the Impeachment process goes something like this:

1.) One or more Congressmen in the House of Representatives present the Articles of Impeachment for consideration.
2.) The House considers the Articles and says "yea" or "nay"; A yes vote (a simple majority is required) acts like an official indictment against the President. This is the actual "Impeachment" that everyone talks about. A common misunderstanding is that Impeachment means removal from office. That takes place in step three.
3.) If impeached, the Senate acts as the jury in a trial presided over by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. If convicted (this part requires a 2/3ds majority of Senators), the President is then removed from office.

Two Presidents have ever been impeached. Andrew Johnson (succeeded Lincoln after his assassination) and Bill Clinton. Johnson resigned before his Senate trial and Clinton was aquitted. Richard Nixon was never officially impeached, but he resigned after it became clear that not only would be be impeached, but that the Senate would remove him from office.

Another minor gripe: Inability to switch away from the game under Linux. When playing a game like this sometimes I like to switch out of the game (in Windows Alt+Tab) and maybe respond to a buddy that I'm chatting with -- or even relate how hilarious I find the game to be. Haven't tried the Windows version so I can't say whether or not this gripe is Linux-specific. Otherwise, the game looks great and is very fun so far. A must-have if you're a PA fan. I will definitely be purchasing the full version.

  5. Get GRUB2 production ready first... on 2008 Google Summer of Code Highlights · · Score: 2, Insightful

Personally, I would prefer it if somebody would get GRUB 2 "production ready" first, instead of making fancy GUI menus for it.

Maybe it's just me, but I'd really like the ability to boot from LVM and get proper EFI support (though not really an issue until EFI is in wide distribution for x86) without having to install an experimental package.

It's a bootloader, guys. Functional first, form later.

I'm interested enough in this project to try and install Funpidgin as soon as I get home tonight. I haven't been very happy with the direction that the Pidgin UI has taken of late, even though the underlying features of libpurple have improved very much IMHO with each release of Pidgin 2.x. Plus I hate the attitude of people who say "well if you don't like it, write a plugin." Maybe I don't have the time to learn how! Sheesh. I thought the developers of good programs were supposed to care about user needs instead of telling them where to shove it if they like a feature and don't want to see it removed. I realize that there is a point where backward-compatibility becomes unreasonable, but you'd think something as simple as allowing the resizing of a text window to be a user-selectable option would be well within reason. And add me to the list of people annoyed by the inability to resize the text input box. I've done that ever since I was using AIM on Windows years ago.

I think if Microsoft were to produce their own version of *NIX, it would probably be based on *BSD so that they could close-source it. Microsoft has built their business strategy in recent years around the idea that "open source is bad," so I can't imagine they'd go against that philosophy now.

Everyone has a comfort zone, and for most people that comfort zone is with Windows, regardless how how different the user experience with Vista is compared to XP. So in spite of all the criticism, if people eventually adopt Vista, isn't that what was more or less expected? I'm sure MS expected a general attitude of "you will use it because we made it," even if users weren't excited about it. Not to mention that Windows is the platform that most developers write software for because of its ubiquity.

The problem is, SAP was essentially hosting Oracle Metalink documents on how to resolve Oracle database issues in SAP and claiming them to be SAP's own work. I can see where Oracle might be just a bit miffed about a rival company claiming the authorship of their own IP. Especially since Metalink is a subsciption-based service. Why subscribe to both Metalink and SAP's own OSS (Online Support System), when you could get all of your solutions from OSS? Large enterprises pay big money for these services. In this case, I think Oracle has a valid claim.
