Thats is an interesting viewpoint consider your handle "quakeaddict". What operating systems does quake run on?

Now last time I checked quake3arena got far equivalent scores on at leat the linux, and windows platforms, actually framerates only differing by 2-3 frames per second.

So please be a little more precise when you talk about speed. Speed isnt the reason why they are not porting it. The reason why they arent porting it becuase the language is pointless without the COM components, and Win32 APIs. I looked at the intro, and language reference.. did you?

Want to know what is looked like... Simple it looked fsckin exactly like java syntax, and even the API calls. It is too bad that M$ still cannot create products that play nice with others.

I am a webdeveloper, and when I develop sites, I dont say screw the netscape user and make IE specific, if I took that aproach, not only would I be cutting out some of my userbase, but I woul also look like an asshole for not taking the considerations of other people in my design. But of-course M$ always that we need it to be innotive crap to fall back on. Thats ok though, becuase I am sure that this will be great for Windows developers, working with COM is a pain-in-the-ass. But it is definetly a pure windows solution exactly like VisualBasic, very limited in scope, and not nearly as cool as it initially sounds. I think that modern language cover most of the bases, we have C\C++ for speed and maturity, java for platform compatibility, and elegeant design, perl for web-hacks, and get-it-done jobs. Why another language...? Becuase the world doesnt need another programming language... it needs interoperability, M$ should start thinking about how they are going to intergrate with the unix systems, becuase if they go down hill, they will have no one to hang on to but themselves. nuff said. -Nathan

I think the above post should be moderated up, he make some interesting points.

what Sun is rightfully afraid of is that Java will go the way of Unix - 57 different flavors, each of which requires a modifications to a Makefile to even compile, much less run. The fact that Microsoft has already attempted to pollute Java is more than enough justification to keep the language centrally managed.

I would like to make a few points about the above qoute:

    • Java has a very good reason for maintaining control over the java spec. A solid definition of what Java is, is absolutely essential to developers who will be working with this technology, esp in terms of ecommerce and java servlets.
    • Another reason is that Java is designed to be platform independent. It is one of the key points to the architecture of the language. (I my opinion they did a pretty good job). Not maintaining Draconian control over the spec lets companies add proprietary extensions, hence diluting the architecture *coudh* *cough* Microsoft.
    • One of the problems is that Sun might use this Draconian control to extert market dominance over Java. Thus gaining an unfair advantage.
    • This open committee is a good idea is forced Sun to be responsible for technologies changes. It also puts the spotlight on Sun whenever they want to do anything shifty.

But take a moment to think about the hardware engineers, and coders who stay up all night behind deadlines trying to sqeeze a few more frames per second out of the hardware. Did you see how many butterflies there was on the screen, or how many ping pong balls there was? Or how fine the polygons where on the Raven models.

Now I like bashing M$ as much as the next guy. Its easy to do, they have made silly mistakes in the past, but this demo I can respect. Slasdotters always complain about the FUD, or try to turn everything into FUD. Have you ever thought about the hardcare coders, and hackers at M$? Oh yes.. they are there. Microsoft has some of the most dedicated and hardcare techies out there.

You know what I think is happening. I think that you see these amazing and beautifully renders screenshots, and you know that its good, you just dont have the balls to admit it. That said, I work at a major telecom company that *cough* *cough* (created UNIX). I love Linux/FreeBSD I use them at work and at home extensively. Just because I love UNIX doesnt mean I cant see the beauty in other things. The words of Socrates come to mind.

I went to a man who was reputed to be wise, thinking that there, if anywhere, I should prove the answer wrong. So I examined the man -- I need not tell you his name, he was a politician--but this was the result, Athenians. Then I conversed with him I came to see that, though a great many persons, and most of all himself, he thought he was wise, yet he was not wise, though he fancied he was. By doing so I mafe him indignant, and many of the bystanders. So when I went away I thought myself, "I am wiser than this man: neither of us knows anything that is really worth knowing, but he thinks that he has knowledge when he has not, while I, having no knowledge, do not think I have. I seem, at any rate, to be a little wiser then he is on this point: I do not think that I know what I do not know."
    Socrates - The Apology

So I ask of you dear Slashdotters, tell us not that the XBox blows, but also tell us your reasoning behind so we may become clear in the truth.

The truck drivers get paid a chunk af change about 60-70K, The loaders make about 10$/hr, and they work 6 hour shifts. You cant load 8 hours a day your back will explode. :) Anyway its unrelated by take not that there are plentry of jobs that dont touch computers, Mitnicck can make an good 15-24$ hour in Montana as a hnad, or he can make good money about 12-15$ hour as a entry level construction worker. People forget that this is good money to most people.
My dad make arounf 45K a year as a mechanic, and has been doing it for 20+ years, he is also the one of the best mechanics I know. As oppsosed to me I make around 50+ a year as a coder, and Im not the best the coder I know.. by far. I when I realize how much I make in the tech industry as a developer.. I try to be humble, and realize that alot of people are making less and consider themselves very successful, it is all a matter of perspective.

Here is my opinion on the Mitnick subject.

    1. First thing is first. Mitnick broke the law. He stepped over the line, and as a consequence he lost some of his rights. Yes people have some rights even if they kill someone, but the important thing to remember is that they lose some rights. Its funny that alot of rights are in actuality priviliges.
    2. It is unfortunate that he was mistreated (and he was) concerning his imprisonment. A similiar case comes to mind (Steve Jackson Games), and they were innocent from the beginning. The FBI just about destroyed there business.
    3. I think that the judge is being a little too harse on Mitnick concerning the public speaking, but you also have to look at it from the layman's point of view. Mitnick has to obtain trust from society again. He has screwed it up multiple times. I think that he should take it cool and learn to function in society again, the same basic rules apply to him, that apply to everyone.
    4. Concerning to above mentioned bullet. There is something called free speech, and even if you kill someone, you still have the freedom of speaking about anything you wish.
    5. Along those lines. There is no such thing as freedom or free speech, it is all an illusion. Most people stay in line and follow the mobs direction, or follow a few people you have enough intelligence to take over the minds of people to lazy to think for themselves. For the most part peers keep other people in line, and prevent radical thought from spawning. Think about it a little bit.. what *really* maintaines our illusion of freedom. The government.. the consitution... It is a peice of paper, a peice of paper cannot kill or harm a person. No my friends it is force, That peice of paper represents violence and force it is a doctrine forcing people to live by its rule. (similiar to the GPL). It is a facade of freedom. All freedom is .. is a state of mind. A particular perspective that we have choosen to live by. The First Ammendment give up the right to free speech, but what If I want to right to disallow free speech... Do I have the right to do it.... I can try, and people will destroy me before they allow that to happen.
    6. In closing I would like to point out that I think the US consitution, and and Bill fo Rights is the one of the best things to happen to people. Our illusions are so strongs they make themselves concrete. I am a firm believer in our societies system, aside from it contradictions.
    7. Mitnick is a harmless enough fellow. If he is still stupid enough to exploit the fears of common men, then he will pay to consequences. He complains that it isnt fair, well what is fair? Was is fair for him to break into those computers? I think its time for him to take a step back and not look at the definition of fair, rather look at you currently controls the definition of fair. The people who control the definition of fair currently, has guns, and the ability to make him a little bloodstain and the ground. Thus it has been this way through history. heheh
