  1. Formal Methods on Can Software Kill? · · Score: 1

I thought if there was any risk of human injury, the expense of applying Formal Methods was justified.
Formal Methods is the application of Mathematical Proofs to software.
FM can actually eliminate all Functional risk,
which still leaves Integration risk (interfaces with outside systems), and Environmental risk (e.g. differences between development and production).
I wonder if these companies used FM, and to what degree. The cost of FM is horrendously expensive, so I could see them skimping where they thought they could get away with it.
I also thought FM was government mandated for Military & Health systems.

  2. X-Box as a DVD player on Xbox Auto-Update Blocks Linux Usage · · Score: 1

I bought an X-Box when I was sure Microsoft was loosing money on the deal. I got Halo (linear crap), Jet Set Radio Future (linear fun), & some car racing game in one pack.
    I already had a DVD player & a gamecube.
When I found out that the X-Box is a top of the line DVD player, able to handle a wide screen TV and Bollywood DVD's (my wife is Indian), I now use it exclusively as a DVD player, and play games on the gamecube.

  3. Re:Get up and walk. on Getting Back Into Shape While At The Office? · · Score: 1

Get the Gut Busters book: Waist Loss.
It targets sedentary men. eg. notable is that fidgeting makes up a significant energy output for sedendary people. There are lots of little tips like that. Also beer does not make you fat, its mostly easily burn energy (sugars), what will make you fat is eating sugar and fat in the same meal, as the body burns the sugar and stores the fat, that's also from the book.
I'm in the same pickle, I went on a raw food only diet and lost 4 belt notches, but that's a really difficult diet to get on/stick to.
Running burns more energy than walking. So do run up the stairs (all the stairs), and run short bursts (so as not to get sweaty) whenever you have a clear path (with no intersections). The biggest problem with running is the risk of running into someone, which at worst is unpopular.
My problem is the wife's delicious curries, rather than beer. :)

  4. Re:Don't tell anyone ... on Starting a Home-Based Software Company? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I tend to agree. Councils in Australia will do nothing whatsoever unless someone complains in writing. If the business generates lots of cars parked outside, incessant noise, or other things the neighbours will notice, its not suitable for a home business anyway.
Otherwise the biggest problem is family, friends, and relatives treating you as a lay about, and bugging you to do real work, because they can't see nor understand what you do!

  5. I am an "Infrastructure Specialist" on A Title To Replace "Systems Administrator"? · · Score: 1

Here at EDS my job code is Infrastructure Specialist, which is 1 step up from Infrastructure Analysist. My actual job title is incomprehensible gibberish (Platform Environment Manager). In any case, something with "Infrastructure " in it sounds okay to me.
I've always hated "administrator" as much as "personal assistants" hate it.

Rant: EDS is the place where decisions are made based on fear, no facts to be seen; accusations are true, no chance to defend against one; working accounts with custom services tailor to a particular client are "corporatised" i.e. asked to use corporate standard tools and processes, reducing service; ...

  6. Peter programming language on Teaching Programming Skills to Children? · · Score: 1
gemtree has a grapical iconic tree shaped language that is very easy to follow, cute to program with, and has an easy setup to drive Peter & Lucy (rabbits) around a square grid.

The lite version is free & great for kids.

No arrays, sharing of functions between programs, structures, object oriented concepts, ... so very dry for an experienced programmer.

  7. Re:Imitation? on Diamonds - Are They Really Worth the Cost? · · Score: 1

Having been married for 9 years, and keenly observed the reaction of my wife and her friends to the real thing, vs the imitation, the imitation is often MORE GAUDY, and is received BETTER than the real thing.

IMO the way women think is the way it looks is the critical thing, the way it works can be easily overlooked, and is only important to the at most half of all women who even bother to consider it (referring to Zen & the Art of Motorcyle maintenance - people are either Form or Function).

  8. More likely the anti-oxidants on Caffeine May Reduce Alzheimers · · Score: 1

The Natural Health society magazine I read
suggests that <A HREF = "http://www.zool.canterbury.ac.nz/freeradicals.htm ">free radicals</A> assisted by metals (Al and Fe mostly) are major contributors to alzheimers.

It seems to me that the <A HREF = "http://www.clubtea.com/teahealth.html">anti-oxida nts in Tea</A> are the more likely preventer than the Caffeine.

Note that the article establishes tea as a preventer, there is no link in it between what's in the tea, as they admit they don't know.
