That controlled environment you refer to is also known as the modern farm (ok, different techniques, same principle). All domesticated cultivars would be unable to outcompete wild flora, but somehow they always manage to make enough food to feed the whole world. Why would this be different when is is about wet farming instead of land-based? A system of concrete ponds/gullies is easy enough to clean once in a while, and if you cover it with polyethene tunnels, you could enrich the CO2 content for faster growing and harvest fresh water (condensate from the tunnelwalls) as a byproduct. In the end it doesn't matter that much what variety is the most prolific: it matters that your CO2 is converted into biomass that is harvestable. The next step is to extract the primary oil content for the biodiesel, and the rest (cellwalls, proteins, sugars) can be converted to more diesel-like fuel and gas with a proces like Thermal Depolyremisation or Thermal Conversion (Proces). That also recylces the anorganic content (algae/plants nutrients), that you can feed back in to the algae ponds or sell to other farms.
It is all too easy to get entangled in a email flamewar on some list. Only rarely your opponent will not only give in, but be persuaded that your point of view is the right one. The trick is to avoid those situations alltogether. Or unsubscribe:)

That does not need to be the case, as neural nets are very good at distinguishing different signals in the same space. The brain just sees the correlation between the red pwallops and fusitales them into amorpholous sets. So you don't need different regions to proces different sensors.

To test that you would have to measure the sensitivity of the new red receptor and adjust your intensity to that so that the only difference is in the color, not the intensity. The problem offcourse is that you cannot do that same experiment with normal mouse which have a different red sensitivity, and no control == bad science. So their claim that the GMs mouses brain really processed the red light signal different from the green might be a bit over the top.
(hmm thinking about it, if the GM mouse cannot discern between red and green, there might be a certain redlight intensity where their scores would drop significantly, while the controls would score better. If you cannot find that, my hypothesis is wrong and their claim is right. Now lets see if I can find if they did that test...)

Now what happens if a popular brand introduces such a thing at an affordable price? They will not sell that much more hardware directly, but the PR image they create with it is worth a lot, and all they had to do is produce something decent. What I don't get is why let some potential problem (ok maybe it didn't much of a chance) ruin the whole flight? You are up high/fast enough anyway so why not take every chance you got and just ride it untill it breaks. Stopping will surely break it so you have nothing to loose. Or do they?

You saw much the same as I did: a clock that was at T+29sec and a rocket still on the pad letting of a could of vapour. I interpret that as the launchatttempt being scrapped due to some reported malfunction. Then you have a rocket loaded with fuel and oxidiser standing on the pad, which is a pretty dangerous situation. there is no way you are allowed to walk up to the rocket and attach some hoses to pump out the LOX. So they have to do it remotely by slowly letting the LOX boil off. That is the white cloud you see escaping from the rocket, I think. But I could be wrong, maybe that that vapor is just the normal amount of LOX boiling off in the heat of the sun.
The lower oxigen content just means that fires will not selfsustain. But if you have an external source for energy input, like the short you mentioned, thngs will still get hot and start to smoke. The chances are just a bit better that it does not cause a full-on fire. You are not supposed to be working all the time in the serverroom anyway, it's much too noisy in there and your 200Watt of heat production would be much better used to warm your office. In other words: you would have noticed that fire too late anyway if you had to rely on the amount of smoke coming from it.
