Oh boy! Another way to get all of those ads and offers I so enjoy to my computer screen! I thought all this adware stuff was the bees knees. Now this comes along!
An exploit like this would certainly work with Linux if the right conditions exist. Have a Gmail account? Scripts enabled in Firefox? Yep. Could work on Linux.
Is it completely in their hands? They own the XSS code that has the vulnerability that is being exploited. Even programming that is outsourced is usually wholly owned by the outsourcing parent. To answer your question: yes, it is completely in their hands.
How do I know if I'm vulnerable? Are you plugged into the interweb? Do you have a Gmail account? Yes and yes? You're vulnerable to this XSS exploit.
Can I do anything to protect myself? There are no suggestions in TFA or the subsequent articles as to how to protect yourself from this specific exploit. However, there have been a few good recommendations in the comments for this article on/.
One part of me likes the first two ideas. I mean, there could eventually be a Windows killer distro out there. And at the rate things are going, Ubuntu seems to be the likely candidate. On the other hand, Linux does have a place with hardcore geeks out there who like to tinker and tune the kernel.
A second part of me is wondering why we all can't get along. Linux isn't going to be annihilated. Even if Torvalds were to walk out in front of a bus tomorrow, development of the Linux kernel will not cease entirely. Businesses have too much riding on Linux for it to fail. I could be wrong; but I highly doubt the doom sayer's claims.
Sucks for them I guess. I really don't think that the ACT/SAT scores should be used by colleges or universities. Instead, the IQ test score should be used. The ACT/SAT tells that you know stuff. The IQ test shows your ability to figure things out.
Perhaps from a math standpoint, the ACT and SAT could be useful. But the rest of the stuff in the tests... useless.
You know, I don't find this post funny as much as I find it insightful. If I had a nickel for every time someone called me about something "catastrophically wrong" with their computer and it turned-out to be something as dumb as an icon missing or something wasn't installed at all, I would have enough nickels to buy slashdot!
My $0.02 on unbundling Windows is that it would be a bad thing for the reasons the parent specified. The thing about Windows is: it just freakin' works for the non-technically-inclined. Take this bundling away from them and POOF! They're lost.
This just goes to show you that Joe Consumer out there will use whatever he is comfortable with. I know several non-technically-inclined people who took advantage of an "OS version revision (not a downgrade necessarily)" to XP just because they don't like how slow their new computers were running and they didn't like the San Quintenesque security of Vista.
I also know several people who still use Windows 98 on their home machines just because they like it. Sure they can't get new Windows Updates and finding new software is damn near impossible but they like it.
On the other hand, I do know a handful of people who like Vista and actually prefer it over XP. Not for the security, but for the "WOW". Of course their systems are superlative in every respect to performance.
This "use what you like" thing may be why Mac OSs do so well. I mean, what really has changed from UI, performance and security perspectives that can be easily seen since OS 10.0?
Change is a bitch. I know. I know. Get off my lawn.
Considering this recent revelation of the future from this prophet, we here at Microsoft want a piece of the action too. We have been dodging this bullet for too long. It's time to sink our teeth in and bite it.
We have been holding secret negotiations with Torvalds and starting next year, the NT kernel will be scrapped in favor of the Linux kernel. Windows will cease to be an operating system. Instead, Microsoft will develop something to be known as "the Windows Desktop Environment", or WDE for short. WDE will have all the user-friendly features you have come to love in Microsoft Windows operating systems with the exception that everything about it will be open source.
Help us make WDE and our new distribution become a success and continue your support for Microsoft.
I tried Gentoo when I was relatively new to Linux. Much like you, I had a very bad experience. The installation procedure was way over my head (and about 50 pages long!). Your comment made my day sir.

Why not take both into consideration?
They just don't understand/appreciate the fruits of your gift.

It's all about the people you work with.

Sure, now that the vulnerability is known, the likelihood of it being exploited just went through the roof.
Well when saying that Vista security is like buttsex, you have to say something about prison.

Still there may be a surface to land on... should we overcome the obstacles of getting there.
Ummm Jupiter may have a surface to land on.
Don't blame me! I vote Libratarian!

If we had armed rebellions every 20 years, as Thomas Jefferson suggested, we wouldn't be reading crap about government misconduct.
It's shit like this that makes me believe in my credo that much more: "I may answer to the government, but the government answers to Smith & Wesson!"
