Um... 60hz is that little plug in your wall. Did I miss the NY Times story about the mass ebola epidemic running rampant for the last 100 years?

Why couldn't it cause impotence so these dopes don't breed?
  2. Re:Dissenting View from AV Snob on To HDTV or Not to HDTV? · · Score: 1

Kevin's right, HDTV is a mess.

To start with, if you look at a pro demo, HDTV VCR -> monitor, it looks amazing! Nice depth, great color, and side-by-side with NTSC there is no comparison. Even my mom can see a diference.

Sadly, you'll never see this at home.

First, broadcasters are NOT required to send their digital signals in hi-def format. The local station can decide which format to support, and many will downconvert. Why? When the FCC gave them new channels, they didn't pick one spec. So the locals can: 1) Send one channel of hi-def, or 2) Send four channels of "normal" def TV, only one of which was to be free. The rest can be private.

Second, your cable company can make the same decision, the FCC has yet to rule as to whether they "must carry" locals at full resolution.

And if the cable does carry hi-def, it will be through their new digital compression systems. Which might be good enough for stills and talking heads, but still can't quite handle full motion video.

Third, what about satellite? They compress even more than cable. Watch flame, water, or any fast action. The pipe is too small.

Fourth, there is no pre-recorded software. No system of hi-def DVD or tape sales has even been proposed.

Fifth, no recording allowed. No VCR's or PVR's until the Digital Rights folks have their say.

I've been watching HDTV at work for a few years now. It's just not worth it.

  5. Re:We must learn to think of the consequences on Cheap Robot Kits? · · Score: 1

Sorry, but this "Anonymous Coward" is incorrect. It is impossible to know the consequences of any given new technology, as almost anything can be used for good or evil. Past predictions have often been wrong, on both sides. Most new technologies have been greeted with grand expectations and dire warnings, both of which are overblown.

His question "Maybe the pace of development should be stopped so that we can consider the consequences?" has a very scary subtext. Does he actually think all humans will stop experimenting? Or does he see a super-national Commissioner of Science that would license all researchers and ban any study of the forbidden topics?

Guide + is the crippled brother of Starsight. Starsight has a seven day schedule. Both download data off the blanking interval of your local PBS station, it's up in line 14 and 15. There is no back channel, the data only flows one way.
