True, and I think that is where a lot of people's gripe is with CDs. They have been the SAME price forever. And now that everyone knows how much a BLANK CD costs ($0.50), they wonder why it costs $15 or more for a CD. And then you hear that artists get like maybe 10% or something.
True, but I teach music. And I've talked to a lot of my students about their buying habits and stuff. They generally will buy a WHOLE album of whomever is the pop hit at the moment. Or they will try to get all the songs off Kazaa.
The only way to curb illegal downloads/pirating/etc, is to make CDs cheap and easy to get. Like DVDs. If CDs were like 1/2 price, like $8 or less, a lot more people would think about buying them than looking for them on Kazaa or Newsgroups or BitTorrent.
I personally like the idea of being able to hear a song before I buy it and then just buy the songs I like. That why iTunes is good.
Yeah, totally. The slashcode site hasn't been updated in what, two + months?
I mean, I like the software. It runs great, but since I have a limited bandwidth, it would be great to get rid of some of the crap (aka: gifs) that it uses. But the issue of the tweaking that happens in the CVS kind of puts a damper on being up to date with the software and having new/different templates work. Just about everytime I update the CVS, I end up having to reload all the templates I have......:-(
No, there aren't any HUGE changes, just little annoying tweeks that seem to change everything.
And I like running slash cause its perl, and seems to handle things better than PHP......but I might switch if PHP could do all that slash does and more and there was some sorta migration tool.....
The problem, as I posted earlier, is the twiddling of the CVS that slashcode.com has. Running a slash site (which I do) and staying current with the CVS, you 9 times out of 10 have to update your templates. Little things change. Syntax, variable names, etc, etc. It's a pain. It would be really nice to see slashcode embrace BOTH a old HTML version of the default theme and a CSS or whatever version. Both being able to work against the current CVS.
Actually, it would be nice to see the slashcode.com site updated. Ever since Krow left, it has been rather useless.:-(
Fast page loads would be one thing. Do a view page sometime and see all the CRAP that is in there. If you could reduce it then you could be speeding up your web viewing (slashdot reading) experience, and unclogging/freeing up Slashdot's bandwidth. Sounds like a win/win to me.
Yes, and that is why we won't see it happen anytime soon. Slash is generated with Templates. And if you have ever looked at the template code, you'll see what a mess it is.....
One of the problems is the constant twiddling that happens on the CVS of slash. If you run a slash site, which I do, and keep up to date, you need to usually update every template on the site. Little things change, etc, etc. It's a pain in the ass. And look at when the Slashcode site was updated. Like months ago.
It would be GREAT to see them finally, 3 or 4 years later, dump the old theme and streamline it with CSS and stuff. Is it going to happen anytime soon. Probably not.....
I think the main reason is for those hard core mountain bikers. As an avid cyclist myself, I always lub up the chain before bicycling, and clean it after every 5 rides.
I have an old Tyan Dual Pentium Motherboard. I think it's a Tiger 100, running 2 Pentium IIIs at 450 with 512 Megs of RAM. In June I bought an Adaptec 2400 RAID controller off Ebay. Set it up to mirror two 40 gig drives. Works great.
The OS of choice is FreeBSD 4.8 right now. Runs a email/web/fileserver.
For my work, I'm thinking about using an older Powermac 9500 to set up as an iTunes server. Since I'm a musician, I have a TON of MP3s ripped from CDs and obtained off Emusic (before they switched their subscription thing:-/). Anyhow, the other teachers would love to be able to access my 150+gigs of music, and having it on the network (yeah, imagine a music store that has a network......) where they could pretty much pull up any song.....pretty cool.
SO, that server is going to be a 9500 running OS X 10.2.8, with at least 2 250 Gig hard drives either Mirrored or Stripped using OS X's software, and I'll be backing it up via Firewire drives using something like Retrospect 5.1 or FolderSync or something. Haven't gotten to that point yet!
Well, and then the cost of the Mac. I'm currently setting up an old 9500 with a G4 700 card in it to use as a server. Planning on plopping in 2 250 Gig hard drives using a Sonnet IDE card. Probably going to set it up using Software RAID. We'll see.......
I was really interested in the "Sharing" feature as my MP3/ACC library is now over 120 gigs and I wanted to set up some sorta server with RAID and be able to hear all the MP3s and stuff.
Anyhow, Sharing from iTunes between platforms works great. Actually, both versions work great. Interesting to see that a lot of the rumor sites (www.macrumors.com for example) were predicting WMA support. But there is none. Not that I miss it or anything;-)

The ones that I've turned on to iTunes love it.

That Slashdot will go to using CSS and other more modern web standards ;-)

One thing I want that it doesn't have is the ability to add files to comments. You can do it to articles, but not comments.

Yeah, but the problem is, you do it once, then update your CVS to the latest CVS, and like over half the templates change.
2. Why?
3. Not a bad idea...
4. Yeah, good point.
Go submit these ideas on Slashcode.com. Good luck getting it posted though.......:-(
Ouch. VERY true.

Mysql works great. Java? Psh....at least slash is based on Perl. Something that people use and that is still relevant.
Yeah, cause it seems a lot of the stuff isn't moving forward anymore in slash. We need Krow back!
Yeah, and a lightbulb is brighter than 98% of the posts on slashdot.......including this one ;-)

Actually, I belive Slashdot is using mod_gzip
Yeah, like slashcode has been updated recently. NOT! Ever since KROW left, it's been really sad there......

Man, 3 comments and the site is down. :-(
Seriously! And sports humor? Most of these guys, like CmdrTaco, don't know what sunlight is........
