Despite my dislike of Apple, they have music that sells just fine without DRM. Steam is another service that works fine in the face of Piracy. They include services that makes the cost worth the price.

A bit offtopic but Steam may operate in the face of Piracy just fine, but they are using DRM just as any other company is - in the end they are only marginally better.

Why should you know or care about ANYTHING in a profile? It's a profile. You're supposed to write a bit about yourself in it. That's what it's for.

This is the important part. I can understand if your username is "I_LOVE_MEN_AND_IM_A_MAN" but when you say "I'm gay" in your /profile/? I thought that's what a profile is for, telling others extra (completely unnecessary) information about yourself.

    Here's a few options:

    - Start treating the indies and non-"top 40 list" artists with respect.

I see this a lot but I don't know what "more respect" is supposed to mean. Sure I'd like to see more new music but haven't all great bands eventually had to scrape up from nothing?

    - Start making the production value of CD's worthwhile again. This means put in proper cover art, lyric sheets, etc rather than just a tiny scrap of paper.

This means they will cost more, unfortunately. And if you don't want to spend the money on a CD then why would you start buying if it cost more, even with the new stuff? I actually don't mind the loss of cool liner art. I find myself buying music from new artists if they allow me to pay online and download their stuff, I'm not really looking for a physical disc and if I ever need one I can just burn one.

  11. Re:I don't pirate anything on Will the New RIAA Tactic Boost P2P File Sharing? · · Score: 2, Insightful

And to the other assholes who say "I don't download, why should I subsidise others ?". A download tax subsidising other people is no different from the way your income taxes subsidise your healthcare system, the raods you never use but are built anyway, the pension being paid to your retired grandmother etc etc.

The pension, healthcare and road systems are all things that are "good", and most if not all of them are wanted by the vast majority of normal people. The problem with a "tax" on illegal downloading is most honest people would be a bit miffed if you told them THEY owed $10 because some kid across the street wants new music without paying full sticker price.

And about the Zune having DRM (is what I heard), I don't really understand that because it comes with a built-in wireless system so you can share your music with any other nearby Zune. Which seems like the opposite of what DRM is trying to accomplish. I have yet to see an iPod that does that.

If I remember correctly the music sharing was extremely limited. While satisfying to send a tune once you send it that person can only listen to it three times before they have to buy it, and they are not allowed to send it to anyone else. This may have been patched or changed in some way, but the only (cool) feature I might have been interested in getting a Zune for was a let down.

You're looking at a LOT of programming/debugging or you are looking at the current solution, which is give everyone the same quests right now and hope they don't mind too much.

  22. Stealing the Credit on Details for Guitar Hero 4 Released · · Score: 3, Funny

When Rock Band and Guitar Hero 3 both came out I was excited. On one hand Rock Band was really pushing the "genre" forward, by making one of the most fun party games I've ever played. On the other hand, Guitar Hero 3 was pandering to the score-heads, those hoping to full combo a song with perfect bonus star power paths and everything. The only downside to this was Rock Band hasn't been selling as well because of the name. Harmonix did a great job of getting Guitar Hero popular, and now that they had to drop the name it hurt them.

To describe Rock Band most people will go with the, "It's like Guitar Hero but..." route - which leads some to believe Guitar Hero might be the better and Rock Band is a cheap knock-off novelty. But now that Activision has seen the light they are doing their own full Rock Band ensemble game. This means to describe Guitar Hero 4, everyone is using the, "It's like Rock Band but..." line.

Hopefully this leads to many more people seeing that Harmonix knows how to make rhythm games, and perhaps Activision should stick with what the do "best".

(Also if Tony Hawk or Bam Margera is unlockable in Guitar Hero 4 I'm going to lose it)
