in this interesting paper, they define an interesting thing, sounds a lot like the slashdot affect:
Flash crowds occur when a large number of users try to access the same server simultanesouly, overwhelming the available resources. In addition to the overload at the server itself, the traffic from such flash crowds can overload the network
links and thereby interfere with other, unrelated users on the Internet. For example, degraded Internet performance was experienced during a Victoria's Secrets webcast and during
the NASA Pathfinder mission.
So, how are the slashdot crowd any different than a bunch of script kiddies? (btw, for those with no sense of humor, that was supposed to be funny)

where all "technology" is basically scrap, but there is not other widespread problems (radiation illnesses, climatic disasters, war, mutant Natalie Portmans running around), I think we would be pretty pooched in some regrards. When you think of it, most tech is based on older tech...we would have to start from square one. If *all* tech is blown, we are back to the purely industrial age, machanic/hydraulics and the likes, but without any electronics to even control them! I mean how could you even manufacture chips without technology? It is not merely and industrial process...from one view point, it would be cool, to start wit yha clean slate, if the hardware gods had some decent written notes, it would take a while to get back up to speed, but with cleaner implmentations...on the other hand, Bill Gates and Co$ would be SOL...nothing to rip off and call their own.

I think that the user-based ad system is one of the most interesting ideas I've heard in a long time. It completly changes the dynamic of the advertising relationship.
I am one of those weirdos who actually goes out of his way to experience certain forms of advertising, while avoiding others. I frequently spend decent amounts of my time howling with laughter and amazement at ads I view on adcritic.com, while at the same time most of the TV I watch is taped, so I can skip over the same annoying ad that gets shown 6 times during a one hour prime time show.
How does this relate to banner ads this article and comment by Hemos? well, I like choice, be it what sort of products I am exposed to, or what sort of advertising I like...what if there was a way to give a hint of some fancy high end flash type ad through a little banner? I might click on it, if I think the art looks really cool...if I saw ads that categorized accordning to some preferences I had specified, or were geographically targeted (upcoming conserts, movie times...whatever) I would surely be more likely to click-through.
All in all, I have to say I was very impressed, and quite amused with the honest and interesting ideas proposed here.

...would be a picture of a naked Natalie Portman pouring hot grits all over herself, with a word balloon that says "all your beowulf clusters are belong to us"
Seriously, how can we expect to communicate with extra terrestrial intelligences? How can we assume the would understand that the symbol 1 stands for a single unit, and 2 stands for a pair of units? I like the idea of pictures (like the one sent along with Voyager?) but that assumes they possess an organ which senses visible radiation (as opposed to say x-ray vision?).
Not that I think the attempt is pointless, just that maybe we should make the message as universal and simple to sense/comprehend as possible...so, instead of the picture I mentioned above, why not actually send Natalie Portman, with a bowl of hot grits, and make her repeat the phrase over and over as she feeds them the hot grits? I mean, they would have to sense something out of all that information would they not?

All I can say is they took away my freedom to post, and gave me nothing. But heck, it was free, so nothing lost, just my free business.
As for other web based USENET posting sites, I have not found a decent free one yet.

An article which appeared yesterday on Securityteam's website shows there is a "bug" in whois entry retrieval system wherin a registered sub domain will have its entry retrieved before the real parent domain's. The example they show is identical to the whois information being shown here today.
If this is the true cause, and it is not corrected soon, whois (sic) to say how far it might go?
