  1. Re:bad idea on Google Apps Slow to Replace Competition · · Score: 1

Google apps (the email and calendar bits) are great for small business. Where I work (10 employees) we have our own exchange server on residential dsl along with all the associated costs and hassles. I think we're blacklisted or something for being an open relay, hehe.

I told my freak employers: we could continue to use our email addresses and have it all hosted for free using google apps. I was promptly told we were a microsoft only company. Bah, fools.

They are currently trying to get quotes for managed exchange...

The crazy thing is, microsoft spent an incredible amount of money and time on Vista. Then before release cut a lot of the features that were in Longhorn.

I'm also very cynical about their multi versioning ultimate, basic etc. They're just trying to segment the market to maximize revenue, it's software - it isn't costing them anymore to produce ultimate than basic.

Extra DRM restrictions on HD content etc just makes me want to puke.

I just expected more. Vista and Bill Gates can go to hell.

They get a bunch of students who then use it to do their research on weather patterns, physics problems, statistical analysis of snow rabbit droppings...

You don't need super computers to build nukes, the US uses them because they no longer do testing.

I've pretty much worked as a maintenance programmer for years, seen some horrible stuff. I have to agree that the environment in which the programmer is put makes a big difference.

I'm currently working on undocumented poorly conceived rubbish. One could blame the previous programmers but if you speak to the managers there, they don't spec anything and are unwilling to even talk about the systems...

Why, because they're not really sure what it should do, they just have some vague notion... They ask for a vague idea to be implemented and leave the poor graduate programmer saps to come up with something that meets their needs.

My advice - don't be quick to criticize your predecessors, you haven't walked in their shoes.

You should be cautious about anything being presented. Expert or not. In most situations there will be lots of difference evidence to consider. It's a matter of judgment not black and white.

For example, a suspect fleeing a murder scene in a White Ford Bronco after his wife was just killed should be given a little weight. If the same suspect owned gloves which were found bloodied at the murder scene, that would be even stronger evidence.

Then again, why would Chewbacca, a wookie live on the planet Endor. Endor with 4 foot tall ewoks. It does not make sense. If it does not make sense you should always acquit.
