Because no one is just going to GIVE me a consumer device just to play mp3s, someone will on the other hand GIVE me an old P233 that i can stick behind the stereo and control from a couple cgi-scripts
Hah, you basicly just described a rave, everyone there (well ok not EVERYONE, but most) is selling or buying drugs, you know it, the cops know it, and everyone who attends the event knows it. But the cops don't arrest the promoters, they arrest the dealers.
This has been happening to EfNET for damn near a year now and no one has said anything. Efnet is losing servers left and right and there's talks of the major hubs dropping and forming a new network with an improved ircd. A major problem is that irc.home.com dropped because they were getting packeted, which left all the @home users to emory, primenet, mcs and prison. Well if someone wants to IRC war (stupid) its a lot easier to bring down all four of those servers than it is to take down every @home user on them. All you stupid packet kiddies need to grow up, get jobs and move out of your parents house, idiots.
This guy got in trouble for something stupid. At least you have a teacher that will say something like this. Ours school seems to put down computers as much as it can. This year we got a new principal. This guy brings in teachers for token jobs, like history teachers, oh it
just so happens the guy is a great basketball coach. Our principal apparently thinks very very little about any club except for the sports ones. Niether the computer club, nor the dramam club got any funding this year. Over the summer the new
guy decided the school need some "cleaning". His idea of cleaning was throwing away over $20,000 worth of computer equiptment, the stuff we had been collecting for 3 years, that groups before me had been collecting since the school
opened 10 years ago. He threw away _everything_, including an SGI Indy we had just gotten last year. He also cleaned out the drama department, which i'm not all that involved in, but he threw away all of thier props. The dramam department
actually made money for the school, we used to have 6 plays a year, we're going to have 2 this year due to lack of funds and props. The drama club tried to raise money by selling candy, he put a stop to that saying it violated school policy. As if all this wasn't bad enough, we got ANOTHER gym, bringing us to a total of 3 gyms, basketball courts indoors and out. Ok, i'm done ranting
Welp, it sounds like you want a nice small PDA, the PalmVx is great for me. The III series Palms and the Handspring Visor models are quite large when compared to the Vx. The Vx can be pretty expensive tho(i've seen it around $350). I think it is worth it for the size, speed, look and metal casing. A lot of people will say the metal casing is just for looks, but I've dropped it from waist level more than a few times and its fine, the Vx has very solid construction. The LiON battery is great because you can just drop your Palm into the cradle at night and never have to worry about dead batteries. And heck, it really does look good, and the metal casing feels great in your hand.
As far as syncing with Linux goes, all Palm models are able to do this using pilotlink and if you'd like a GUI i recommend jpilot. IIRC the Rex 6000 used a scaled down version of WinCE, there is no way this is going to sync with linux. And the range of applications for PalmOS is much greater than that of the Rex 6000.
Its sure supplying me with an interactive TV. I download TV shows all the time, I have every episode of Daria, Futurama and The Simpsons available to me. What else could you ask for?
Actually, i have some really weird Intel hardware from 93, you can't install anything but Win31 or a UNIX variant on it. I used to get alot of Sig 11's when i ran linux or freebsd, but i switched to OpenBSD about a year ago and havn't really had any problems since.
To everyone that says IE loads faster. Duh, of course it does, if you were to load Netscape or Mozilla into ram while the OS booted it would load just as fast. You'll also notice how much ram a properly configured and build linux kernel uses as compared to windows. And as for IE complying to standards, yeah its real easy to comply to a standard when you are the standard.
Reliability is probably one of the biggest reasons big business chooses Sun over x86. Notice I said big business, for a small business where an hour of downtime isn't going to cost anything then go ahead and use x86. But for big business where an hour can cost $100,000 and up then they probably want a machine and OS that can be upgraded and parts switched out without ever powering down. IIRC with large, multiprocessor Sun machines you can open them up and start yanking processors and the thing will keep on going until that last processor is pulled. Now on the matter of Solaris vs Linux. I've seen people point out speed as an issue. I think you are confused, Solaris _flys_ on Sparc, it doesn't do quite so well on Intel hardware. This also depends a lot on your admin, i know a few who absolutely hate Solaris and won't work with anything but BSD, and of course, vice-versa. Also, have your considered FreeBSD at all, it may offer advantages that you havn't looked at. FreeBSD can also run Linux and Solaris binaries if that helps at all.
Ok look, slashdot obviously has quite a big submission bin, it isn't this guys fault that Cliff hasn't read slashdot for a few days. Notice he says "October is almost over" When OpenAFS was released on November 1st. I propose that everyone that has made any sort of stupid comment about this guy not looking hard enough just shut up and look at a calender, then at this question, then at that OpenAFS release on November 1st. Then slap yourself and say sorry.
Actually, they do have a way of prohibiting clones. When new versions come up napster attempts to send an update, in the case of gtk-napster, this attempted send prohibits the clients from signing on. Same goes for older versions of gnapster and gnome-napster. I really did like gtk-napster the best. I am now using Gnapster because the gtk-napster author is in school and doesn't have time to fix the problem. I really wish napster would stop this "no clones" non-sense, it would make it easier for everyone.
To think changing passwords is going to it is naive. If thier violations of policy were this severe a total security audit would be appropriate. I used to work for a telemarketing firm (eww, yes it was that bad) Our admin had so many backdoors installed when I left, 6 monthes ago, it was obscene. A few minutes ago every last one was still there. The best solution would be to take all those backup tapes, put them in a safe place, and reinstall everything. Granted this can be a costly decision, sometimes its faster than fixing everything.
The PalmV series has proved metal casing to be much more durable than plastic
This guy http://www.dave.com makes machined aluminum casing for the PalmIII series organizer, very nice, though costly
I don't know if this is the same type of power supply or not, but about 2 years ago i came into possetion of 3 Intel built server, circa 1995. They use a 4 connector power supply also. Well i only had one power supply, which was 450watts. I found with a bit of case hacking and 2 300watt power supplies it would function just fine.
Also if anyone else has any expirence with these machines I'm looking for some online documentation or perhaps some where to purchase parts for them. These are the specs:
Pentium Pro or normal w/ 60mhz co/pre processor (on daughter board)
4 simm slots, also another VESA slot labeled "mem board" which i have not been able to find. The appear to need parity ram
Dual channel SCSI-II (AIC-7770)
450 watt PS
LCD Panel on front displays:
"PentiumTM 90"
"System Ready"
I'm not sure but i think what he's looking for is something that doesn't require a reboot, since most machines won't boot without a keyboard/monitor.
I really think what you're looking for here is debian, granted you won't be able to upgrade the kernel without rebooting, you'll still have a quick and easy way to upgrade the entire distrobution(-kernel) without rebooting or attaching a keyboard/monitor. Also with debian there's no need to download all the packages yourself, apt does that for you:
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
I can understand an admin being alittle annoyed by portscanning, but really nothing more. If an admin is so worried about a port scanning that he would goto the trouble of reporting it, then he probably isn't very confident in the security of his machines and maybe he should do alittle more reading. If your house got broken into because you forgot to lock your front door you know the cop is thinking "Stupid people", and thats exactly what an employer would think if you left such a gaping hole in your machines.
For the amount of money that it takes to give you that pop3/website/news it is more cost effective for them to just give it to you and charge $10-20 an month than to charge a much lower price and not provide these services. There aren't many ISPs that could stay afloat charging only $2 without some sort of ad revenue
Because no one is just going to GIVE me a consumer device just to play mp3s, someone will on the other hand GIVE me an old P233 that i can stick behind the stereo and control from a couple cgi-scripts

Won't it be an even bigger headache when you get cracked because you were using insecure software?
Actually, in Phoenix the "valley metro" bus system is privately owned, i don't know if that is the case in other places tho.

Ok, lemme make sure i read this right. The SMTP servers were down, so you sent them an e-mail to tell them this? Duh.
