    Don't blame the tools, blame the monkey using them. Bad code is bad, regardless of language/runtime.

    Frankly I wish they'd bite the bullet and finally get the pilots out of the cockpit of commercial airliners altogether, and just use remote control from a central control centre for each airline, or better yet, each airport.

    So when these systems lose radio contact with the plane, then what? The plane just flies around until communication is restored? Fuel tanks are finite in size.

    No matter how automated planes become, there will always be a situation where someone needs to pull levers and push buttons.

    I should add that it works best combined with an A-to-Z mapbook of the city. The London A-to-Z includes a Tube map; an NYC mapbook could include an MTA map.

    It's a pretty map, but it requires an extra level of abstraction for users to properly understand. NYC natives will understand the map just fine, but visitors will find it MORE confusing.

    I don't know about that - the London Underground map doesn't accurately reflect distances, yet it's one of the best known and easy to understand metro system maps in the world. This NYC map is the same, just for NYC.

    Just like Cobol, the definition of a terrible language?

    To be fair, COBOL didn't have much competition in the early days (pretty much just FORTRAN and ALGOL).

    What makes matters worse is that each successive generation grows up watching these movies and will never know that there used to be something better

    Unless you have a collection of older films and encourage the younger generation to watch them. Obviously only works within your own family, but it's a start.

    Statistically insignificant is a perfectly valid result - it means the difference is less than your margin of error. In other words, neither option is superior.

    Most of that has already been solved via voice commands

    Typical use of voice commands:

    Driver: 'Radio 2'
    Car: 'Calling home'
    Driver: 'Cancel'
    Car: 'Radio 1'
    Driver: 'Fuck this' *turns off voice commands and presses buttons*

  18. All-metal mobile phone bodies go from the Nokia Eseries of about five years ago to the current iPhone 5 and HTC One. That's not counting tablets, laptops... you put in a radio-transparent window made out of a different material.

    Or make the case itself the aerial (if possible).

    An interesting read. Still, even though the proportion is greater, it seems the chances of being jailed if you're black are still less in the UK than in the US, though that's probably more to do with ASBOs and community service being used in lieu of jail time.
