Developers can write for THIS platform. they know they have X amount of RAM, and a cpu that is Y units fast. They can write for this one box, and thats it.
They dont have to worry about being made obselete - because the games are written for an exact platform, no 'what if's with the video, sound, cpu, ram, etc.
That has always been the #1 plus for a console, not that Ive owned one since my Sega II.
Unfortunately, there are only a few major suppliers of bandwidth into australia at the moment, and the way i read it, it will only affect new deals.
Therefore, as there will be no immediate change in what our supplier's suppliers will be paying, nothign will change. When they do renegotiate, will they pass it on?
As mentioned earlier, there are only a few major providers of bandwidth at the moment - telstra/aarnet, optus, and tig/ihug. Smaller satellite based services 1) suck, and 2) arent big enoguht to challenge formentioned ISPs.
Disclaimer - myt info is a few months old, but i dont think it has changed much.
Microsoft's Only motivation here would be to gather a stronger following for windows.
By 'giving' (ie losing money) this product to the consumers of the world, they obtain more eyes on more MS logos. Thats a Good Thing for microsoft... I think we all know that Microsoft is all marketing and no product.
Portability? Sure - as long as it's with a windows box.
Microsoft does not give a damn about royalties/licensing fees for games.. Its all about market share. One more person who will be more familiar with ms Windows and the ms interface, and generally associating ms with 'good times' - ie playing games.
Its all very similar to Mcdonalds losing vast amounts of money on happy meals (giving away toys at a loss to kids) or on the kids birthday parties.
This bring me to the subject of a rant - advertising targetted at children, but Im too tired to rant.
By 'giving' this to consumers, microsoft gains another user. Thats all they care about. Its one more user educated in the right (ie 'ms' way to do things.
Come on! this has to be a step in the right direction... the more people with net access, the more the net will matter to more people. The Fax machine can finally die!, for example.
Gee, I know plenty of windows users who know what the "Print Screen" button does.
Yay. Yet another move to remove all consumer rights. You know, here in.au, we little people still have rights. Or at least thats what we're told.
I find it disgusting that corporations will arbitrarily coorperate with each other to put the collective consumer over a barrel. Pathetic.
Meantime, What is the supposed justification for encrypting signals i am sending to my monitor? Am i not supposed to be able to access them? Oh, whait, intel wants to be able to control who makes displays, who does not. Who makes video cards, who does not. Perhaps it might be against those in power (obviously the MPAA and RIAA in.us) ?
A violated key could be tracked down and revoked over a satellite broadcast network, for example
Doesnt that scare anyone? that they can arbitrarily shut down _my_ hardware because some norweigian pissed off a multibillion-dollar-american-corporation ? Scares me. Lots.
Didnt IBM commit the first act of atomic vandalism? Years ago i say a story on this, with B&W images of an IBM name appearing as peaks on a stark background... Ahh well. Let UMass have its glory, but Big Blue did it first. "One day the world will need only five atoms, and only the worlds richest five atoms will be able to afford them".
win2k keeps a 2nd copy of ALL The dll files under the windows directory somewhere... cant remember exactly where. If you need to hack w2k, change the backup as well, or it will detect your file manipulation. teo.
Until recently I worked at a smallish Australian ISP, with baout 8000 users. Our plan at the time was for 120 hours per month, then we started charging extra. Every now and again, someone would be tempted by the free 100 hours with those horrbile green cd's that they get in the mail.
When they did this, the "AOL dial up adapter" would destory the standard windows dial up adapter, thus disabling the normal connections.
I started tech support at the start of 1999, and we had a steady stream of ex-AOL people, and people who were tempted by free hours, and all of them needed to reinstall their DUN (dial up networking) components.
This leads me to beleive that AOL is evil, and has been using this same tactic for at least a year now.
I read the first few lines, then skipped to the end. Anyone else notice that they are basically just asking for money to "fund further tests" which are obvious crap. Carbon dating doesnt work on under 1000's of years (to the best of my knowledge, anyway!)
Did I mention that I am testing my own... err... alien femur ? I cant quite a afford the er... carbon spectral thermograph tests, so please send money to my account: Commonwealth Bank Of Australia, acc 06440410011297 Come on, people, cant we recognise obvious scams ?

So exactly what happens when one of these gets a virus? Do we rest it and give it some chicken soup with lots of fluids? -- There is no sig.

now, if I can just stop the blue-screen-of-death every time I *look* at a tux, i can install Linux.
...and its a pity Linux 2.6 doesnt support bio-USB, because when it does, I'll be able to use those new 2.0 legs I just got!

Tieing the name to the year the software was released is just a way of making sure people remember how old their software is.
...and then of course buy the newer version.
