If you want to get more serious cutting edge space science done, then you need to make the whole concept popular again. That is why I think this whole Virgin Venture is worthwhile, not because it's an eccentric joyride for the rich.

All I hear is "Why put money into a savings account / pension when you could be spending it today?"

It's that sort of thinking that keeps generation after generation of lower class families on the poverty line. The reason to educate the masses to the fullest extent is to increase the quality of life for the greatest number of people, it has sod all to do with whether I'm gonna need all that History or German I learnt back in school right now. I'm planning on living a fairly long while yet, who knows when something I learnt years ago might come in handy and give me the edge over a competitor? Eventually I'll pass my accumulated wealth onto my children who will have an even better start in life. My family will be pushed so far above that poverty line that they can't even see it anymore. The entire point of government with regards to education is to take the long view. It's rare that I see it happening though...

Disclaimer: I'm middle class white and in a decent job; I accredit the latter part to my education.

Whilst that may be true for some people, there are millions around the world who take every word spoken as if it's straight from God. Not everyone has the intellectual faculty to distinguish between peoples opinions on different topics.

A classic example is the whole Bill Clinton - Lewinsky affair. How many people seriously think that cheating on your wife actually has anything to do with how good you are at forming economic policy or dealing with foreign affairs? But nonetheless, a lot of people believed that he should be impeached due to incompetence? (Sorry if I didn't get my facts exactly straight, not American and still in school at the time!)

Don't mean to bring up any political discussion and certainly don't mean to bring up the whole Clinton thing, but it's a very good example of people being unable to separate what people do and say on one topic from what they do or say in another.

A couple of unlucky guys have to carry the bomb from the site to the bomb truck, they would use one of these bins to contain the bomb while they do that. It may not be 100% effective but it's sure as hell better than just carrying the bomb with your bare hands!

Why exactly should someone who has only used Ubuntu for a day, week or month suddenly assume that it should be just exactly the same as the OS they've been using for ten years?

Why should you be able to pick up a completely different OS in a week when you spent ages learning Windows? This is why these "I tried Ubuntu but it wasn't as good as windows" messengers tend to get shot down so often.

PS. I agree that all criticism of Ubuntu should be taken constructively and fixed, to do otherwise would be dismissive of your users and remarkably MS-like.

To tinhk of it anehtor way, your eyes are not ncesesrilay radineg the leterts in the same oredr as you wolud eexpct (left to right).

Take this example: Think and Tihnk.

The new study suggests that when I read the word "Think" I'm mostly just reading it one letter after the other in order. It also suggests that some of the time I'm reading the "H" with my left and my right eye reads the "I". But, the study also suggests that our eyes can cross, so when I look at "Tihnk" maybe my eyes are reading it the other way round, "I" with my right and "H" with my left. This leaves you with the exact same letter order as the properly spelt word. Thus implying that the order of the letters in a word are not as important as you might think. With the addition of a first and last letter rule for a bit of added linguistic comprehension, this is much the same as the Cambridge study you mentioned.

I don't know whether I managed to convey my point very well, but I hope you understand what I'm getting at. From my perspective the two studies seem to go hand in hand.
