    Define spamware. Any piece of maillist software can be used as spamware. Should those be banned as well? I can write a perl script that will send out spam, should perl be banned?

    I bet they only shut down spammers who haven't paid pink contract fees.
    There are no 'pink contracts' at UUnet. If you have proof of one post it somewhere. Otherwise, STFU!

    also, abuse@uu.net no longer accepts complaints from spamcop. what does that say about them? every read the auto reply from abuse. pretty obvious they don't care.
    Well, UUnet does accept spamcop reports, they goto abuse-noverbose@uu.net. The 'noverbose' means you will not get a detailed response, just a short message.

    You should not hold strong opinions about things you know little about.

    Well, acording to these links. They are not the most-spamfriendly. Plus, you can actually call UUnet's abuse staff, how many other Tier1 providers can you say that about? You talk as if UUnet never shuts down anyone, and you know that is not the case.

    UUnet shuts down more websites in a month than most companies have. Don't let this raging kook tell you otherwise. UUnet/WorldCom is quite good at handling abuse issues. Just because UUnet/Worldcom won't give this loon a personalised report about spam, she(?) bitches about it. I can only guess it is because she does not know just how big the company is and what all they are responsible for.

    Good man, you use exim! There are some other DNSBL lists that you might want to lookin to. They are listed here. BTW, what kind of false positive (legil mail getting dropped) rate do you get?

    Try using procmail in conjunction with one (or more) these DNSBL services. Be warned that some of the DNSBL services are more 'aggressive' than others.

    What I'd like to see is some company come up with server side email filters, like I have in my email app
    Procmail, my friend, procmail. If you are running a linux/unix box for a mailserver, use procmail.

    Several, just about everyone in my family has. Many of my non-tech friends have as well. Out of the dozen or so that I have known to do their own installs, one has totally fubared their system.


    Give easy to use apps in an already set-up environment, and people will be productive.
    True, but, people like to install new things. Installing a new program in Windows is easier for a non-tech than it is in Linux (or *any* flavor of unix).

    True, but people like to install things. It is easier for non-techs to install new software on a Windows system. As far as ease of installing new hardware, Windows is easier. It is not perfect, but it is easier.

    when will linux itself be come something that non-technical people can use? Linux is improving on that front, but until it *is* easy for non-technical users to install and use, packages like Evolution, won't make much of a dent.

    The same base commands are used once a cracker has the system, that is what the paper is trying to tell you to look out for.

    True. Another thing that is spurring this is the post 25 filters that most nationwide (and worldwide) ISPs have enabled. So, to get their psudo-anonymous mail out, they need to use services on other ports.

    They will be different in nature, but will use the same commands to gain root access to the box. Read the part where he describes the common commands an attacker may execute, or common files the attacker will request. How the files or commands are accesses may change, but the files and commands will (for the most part) stay the same.

    formmail script exploits. Due to post 25 blocking, spammers are looking for exploitable formmail scripts to send their spam through. I guess the author just wanted to talk about root exploits, but there are other ways to abuse a web server.

    Looks fine with Netscape 4.7 on Solaris as well. Netscape 4.0 under NT will bring up the browser upgrade screen.
