  1. Progress on Why Do Games Still Have Levels? · · Score: 1

I am not sure if this has been mentioned yet (no time to read all 330+ comments). But how about progress. People want to feel they have progressed in the game. Levels is one way to achieve this feeling.

The same way in a sense, that RPG characters, level up and get stronger, you progress.

So without any levels, you might have an unsatisfied feeling after you finish the entire game.

  2. Noise and Smell? on 'Gamercize' Cardio at Our Desk · · Score: 2, Interesting

I was just wondering how it would effect the work place, if everybody was doing this. Wouldn't it cause a major sweat and thus a terrible smell? I am also worried about the noise level, from the machine, but also as a previous poster commented, the puff puff from human beings.

  6. Fear on Secrecy of Voting Machines Ballots At Risk · · Score: 1, Insightful

Ok so it creates tensions, however if seems all of you fear your country and your fellow citizens so much that if someone knew how you voted you would immediately be forced to vote otherwise. I have to say that you guys/girl are somewhat fearful in that democracy you call the USA. As a student of American Studies I already knew that Americans have a healthy distrust of the government (that's why it is usually called administration instead of the Bush(or other) government) however I did not know it went this far.

  8. How long on Secrecy of Voting Machines Ballots At Risk · · Score: 0

How long did they take to figure that out? It seems a bit of an obvious problem. For the rest I do not understand why people are so afraid of saying who they voted for because you should always be proud of what you voted for. If you are not proud of who you voted for then why vote that way? I would vote democrat and would be proud of it, so why would I care if someone knew that.

(obviously I do understand the tensions it can create if everybody in your line of work votes republican, or in your family)

On a more serious note, wasn't it part of the theory that when you travel faster than lightspeed you travel into the future or past? So if they did succeded in surpassing lightspeed how would they be able to tell? (and how are they able to tell anyways?)

  11. Stupidity on RIAA Defendant Cross-Sues Kazaa And AOL · · Score: 2, Insightful

This woman should in fact be cleared of all charges simply because she used Kazaa. I mean anyone who actually uses Kazaa would be so incredibly stupid that it comes close to retardation. (As seen in Family Guy, this can be used as an excuse for almost everything) I mean there are far better applications out there for p2p use. DC++, Bittorrent, Newsgroups, FTP.

I for one use DC++ and Bittorrent which work perfectly for me. DC++ for everything, but also some rare stuff because Bittorrent largly supports new stuff that just was aired or showed in theatres. Anyways just a thought, use these applications instead of something stupid like Kazaa.

Being Santa Claus I generally consider shaving to be pointless for 2 reasons.

    1. The kids love me with my fuzzy beard, without it I am nothing to them, nothing!!!
    2. When I shave my beard it grows back within minutes, as depicted in the awesome succesful funny christmas film Santa Claus featured with Tim Alles as me.

However I do tend to shave my lower regions cause misses santa claus likes it that way.

Seriously, if we ever get as far as a well working quantum computer it would have a huge impact. Imagine IBM super computers that are a hundred times faster then the ones they build now. I wonder what kind of impact it would have on research that needs to calculate lots of huge formulas.

  16. Re:Other games on 10 Years After Big Blue Beat Garry Kasparov · · Score: 0

Indeed that is what I meant. That although if rules are set for the game a computer can win. However with luck involved, in theory a computer could never win. I just wanted to point out that many people seem to disregard this when posting about computers that beat humans at poker.

  17. More information on Images of Endeavour's Damaged Tiles · · Score: 2, Informative

More information on the size and use of the anti-heat tiles or High-temperature reusable surface insulation (HRSI) can be found in this article on wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_shuttle_thermal _protection_system

It seems they are not that big, and I do not think one or 2 damaged tiles whould have a massive effect on the safety of the shuttle. However if someone leaked that tiles were damaged (no matter how few tiles) and NASA did not act on it, the public would be outraged. So perhaps NASA thinks its best to mention this in public and fix it, even if it doesnt have to be fixed at all. Or what if the chance is 1 in a million that it has any effect, NASA doesnt act and the thing crashed, people would be outraged as well. Better safe than sorry.

  18. Other games on 10 Years After Big Blue Beat Garry Kasparov · · Score: 0

I do not understand why some people compare Chess with games like taxes hold em or poker in general. What people seem to miss in my opinion is that unlike Chess which can be purely calculated, poker besides skill is also based on luck. Since a computer cannot bluff and does not have a pokerface or emotions for that matter, it does not rely on skill but on calculations. Which person has what cards, how big is the chance they have this and this card. The computer can than calculate his chances. However if the pc has bad luck it simply wont win every time. Thus the computer will never be albe to beat humans at poker ever single time simply because sometimes a human will get better cards and eventually win the game.

So in my opinion, no, computers will never beat humans at poker because chance cannot be calculated.

  21. Typical Slashdot on Why We Need to Expand into Space · · Score: 1, Insightful

Ah typical slashdot, an article about the future of the planet/species/universe and about half of the comments are pessimistic dramatic black re-actions. We dont mean a thing, we suck, we are insignificant we should just kill our selfs, I have no friends... (oh wait I didnt mean to write that there, nobody should know about that) Not that it matters cause you dont have anyone around you who cares.

However for all the other people here, who are a bit more optimistic, believe in human kind and think we are important. Yeahh to them. I for one wont be gloomed into a depression. I like this planet, I like human kind and if possible we should spread out and find new frontiers to conquer. I love music, art, movies, books and whatnot, it is all one damn fine creation by inventive humans who want to better themself, even though it wont go without a war here and there, eventually we will get there.

Goodluck humankind I will be here watching you progress.

But seriously, although I understand that many chinese inhabitants cannot pay for an original iphone it does not make it right to clone such a product and make money of it. Especially when the original inventor does not get its fair share of the profit. However we do live in the real world and this was to be expected.
