  3. Contacted the Gov about this on Oregon Governor Proposes Vehicle Mileage Tax · · Score: 1

As an Oregon resident, this is clearly just another tax that our illustrious governor is going to use to double-dip. Our state is already highly financially mismanaged by our state government, and now they are proposing "solutions" like this.

Yesterday, I contacted our governor about this, and gave him the following points about why this is completely unacceptable:
    - If the tax is based on mileage, then what incentive to I have to choose a hybrid over a hummer? (our state is FULL of greenies, and promotes hybrid vehicles all over)
    - Under no circumstances will I accept a government tracking device in my vehicle.
    - While its proposed as a replacement to the gas tax, I'm not stupid enough to believe that gas tax will go away if this is implemented. This will just be ADDED in.
    - We will no longer tax the out-of-staters (both people traveling from CA to WA & vice versa, as well as all of the people who choose to live in Vancouver and work in Portland)

This is unacceptable. I told the governor I will leave the state I've lived in since I was very young, and not look back, if he pursues this bull**** additional tax. Until they can figure out how to manage the money they do get, I see no reason they should get any more. The new I-5 interstate bridge in Portland is projected to cost several times what the longer/larger replacement to the bridge that collapsed in the midwest 2 years ago, and we just opened a $400,000 outdoor toilet in downtown Portland. And now they want MORE of my money? Governor Sleepy Ted, you can kiss my ass.

I've been reading stories about the DMCA, DRM, and stuff like this restriction of fair use on slashdot for a few years now. The more I read about it, the more I start getting the feeling that when my generation (teens-twenties) comes into power in the next 15-20 years, that we're so fed up with this shit that we'll abolish patents and copyright altogether, if it hasn't been done already by then. At the very least, restrict it to a very short time limit. 6 months, maybe a year.

I can see the point in copyrights and patents, but these companies have gotten so power hungry and greedy that they've really started abusing the system. I have started thinking that maybe they don't deserve the system's help. Companies like Coca-Cola have managed to make it well over a century without needing a patent or copyright on their main money-making formula. I believe that any intelligent businessman will be able to make money on any product whether or not they have a copyright/patent or not. The copyright system has become a crutch for extremely outdated business models that have been rendered obsolete.

Run with the idea for a minute, when you start a new project, how much of your code do you re-use? (or, a better question, how much would you re-use if you could re-use as much as possible)? The answer would probably not be 100%, otherwise all you would have is an identical program to the original, or an extension to the original. But it would hopefully be a significantly high number, at least on similar projects.

  25. Does it matter? on Putting Anti-Evolution Candidates On the Spot · · Score: 1

Seriously, does it matter what a politician believes about a scientific theory? While I've personally yet to see the smoking gun case for the Theory of Evolution, what the politicians believe on a rather unimportant issue like evolution is a moot point. I'm much more concerned about how they understand important things like: technology and the internet, willingness to support important programs like NASA and DARPA, etc. When it comes down to it, what does a politicians belief on the theory of evolution affect? The only thing I can think of is what they believe should be taught to high schoolers. and lets face it, there is a hell of a lot more problems with the public school system than whether or not they are taught that we're all monkeys with oversized brains, or some sort of "intelligence" created us, or are taught nothing at all about where we come from (since, lets face it, no one knows for absolute sure)

(Note: for me, the smoking gun case would be something like the fossilized remains of a fish with legs, or something along those lines. Near as I have seen, they have yet to find any of the necessary missing links that will show that one species can literally turn into another over time. Personally, I believe in micro-evolution, aka adaptation, but macro-evolution, the changing of one species into another, is still up for serious critical debate, and I've yet to see any sort of proof)
