If people take our code, they'd better behave according to our rules. But we shouldn't have to behave according to the RIAA rules just because we _listen_ to their music.
When you created an entire licensing scheme to play within the rules of copyright that the RIAA exist in, you started behaving according to their rules. When you deviate from that, the previous work to adhere, becomes worthless in many other cases as well as with loading proprietary drivers. OSS is founded on legal theory and the concern about proprietary drivers is equally founded in legal theory. I don't get it.
Much like saying sqrt(-1) is silly (as an imaginary number), you are simply incorrect. Using a construct as opposed to throwing your hands up and saying "that's not something we can use" is a sane mathematical approach to any given problem. It happens that he has accurately described the bahaviours of a useful construct which will inevitably make previously unsolveable problems and dead-end processes, solveable.
That's just plain false. There's a human-noticeable loss of fidelity when you're at 15fps or when there's missing textures (blood spattering, etc). There's a signifigant amount of information loss that's pertinent to the game (FPS, RTS, not so much RPG). HDTV doesn't address anything remotely practical. I cannot ignore the fact that there's an improvement visually, but not an improvement that serves any specific need or gap. The difference in fidelity is not even noticeable to me (when compared to no HDTV plasma), which means that there's a portion of the population that cannot benefit from it. Might as well be buying a TV with an extra Infrared visual component IMO. I'm going to assume that anyone who misguidedly wants to buy one has access to an HDTV signal (for some programs on some stations), but that's not typical either. HDTV is truly a suckers' product.
Well said. 1500 is cheap for a car, not an idiotbox. What on earth do you need an HDTV for, really? Years ago I'd occasionally endure a seies of bad jokes about laymen buying hyper-expensive TVs that didn't provide any value (HDTV). Now we have a/. article endorsing it. Ugh.
America is not unique, but in the clear minority when it comes to this. Sex as a motivator is simply a misperception.
Sex is a physical need akin to a drug addiction. You could also say that physical drug addiction is the most effective means of persuasion, but you cannot be motivated to particular goals with that carrot (although there are certain minor tasks you can have someone do in exchange). It does not rank very high on the scale or long-term torture would consist of drug addiction and withdrawl.
I've found that without paying for a personal trainer, I never would go to the gym. Shame is the single most effective means of persuasion known to man (second is particular violence). At $60 a session, I sure as fuck make my appointments and work my ass off.
There is a subset of the population who are total assholes towards other people. I do not have a reckoning of what the average asshole to non-asshole ratio is, but it's certainly not a number I would trivialize as "very small". In all subjects where people have a voice, this is shown true.
People get drunk off Listerine and huff Glade, that doesn't mean I'm troubled by the actual chemical.
What one considers troubling, is probably exciting for another.
There's no evidence that losing sleep has longterm side-effects, once a month (for example).
Please note, the results of prolonged sleep loss is not the issue.
There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with this drug (that's very helpful for some disorders) other than it's something that has been written in scifi novels in the past, which can be unnerving for those who haven't considered the sociological effects.
I'm sure we can all remember allnighters and some have even experimented with their individual tolerance (47 hours before I physically cannot stay awake). So I'm surprised by the negativity.
I suggested personal will, charity, and determination- which you can find in many studies are quite effective.
Right, a suggestion box. I'm sorry, did you actually explain what you meant? Ivory tower thinking is cute and all, but you are implying there's actual data to suggest your wishful thinking works (read: United Nations). It doesn't, excepting in Civilization(tm). Might makes policy for most of the world and logical thinking is rejected for collective gains. If you cannot admit to that, you have no rational standing in this discussion.
We can be independent, but it will massively and fundamentally impact your way of life in a negative fashion
I've lived out of my car (5 years ago), I made 20k 2 years ago, and I make 80k now. No need to personalize it, as I'll outlast most people in any situation. My standard of living is a result of my determination and opportunities (luck). There is no uniform "standard of living" for Americans. America imports the higher standards of living which is dwarfed by other kingdoms around the world (Dubai). This is fundamentally different than importing a necessary component of society. Food, energy, materials, labor. For all your faith in humanitarian efforts and grand theorizing, you have a very low expectation of what we American humans can tolerate and adapt to. When other countries have had the experience of a collapsing economy (which we have documented and have learned from), there's no reason to think it would collapse our political infrastructure. Therefore, America can be independent and there's nothing I've been shown that shows otherwise.
So I think the true solution is to raise the standard of living in countries we so fear for taking our jobs, for a reasonable redistribution of some of the wealth in the hands of so few, with the intent of providing a livable baseline for all and still room and reason for success and risk taking
You can raise your neighbor's standard of living by killing his king and changing his psyche. Oh yea, forcing your vision of right on someone else is generally wrong and exceedingly dangerous for yourself and them...especially when you're an idiot to try. I can understand conquering, but you're suggesting shaping commercial and political policy of a nation or REGION by suggestion box? This whole touchy-feely Earth kinship idea is nice and all when you're 12 but I would hope you could take people's lives a bit more seriously.
America is completely capable of being independent, we just choose to exploit efficiently. Watch what we do with the debt we've racked up against China. We're just gonna ignore them.
Being a contractor for a company with a large stock and capital portfolio is not preferable to being a perm. Being a contractor means they cut you first then ask you to come back when it suits them. Being a part-time contractor for small-medium companies is a reasonable argument. You don't actually think Yahoo fires you then invites you back contract for double the pay? That's just wishful thinking.
Surprising you bring that up, since nobody has mentioned it. If that's what you were going for, you got it. Shill. Although it's more likely you're just deluded into thinking that what Blizzard wants equates to a definition of their rights. Their rights are not defined by some ambiguous and immature "be square with them, and they will be square with you." mentality. THAT'S being childish and unrealistic.
Yahoo had cutbacks last year at this time as well. The entire culture is bankrupt (from the veterans' point of view). Young people with fresh ideas and no discipline. Lower employment standards, lower benefits (if you're lucky enough to avoid contractor-dom), inferior products. The smart money sold their Yahoo stock LAST year. I'm trying to think of 1 service that is synonymous with Yahoo and I can't...but I have memorized a number of audio clips (commercials/IM). That's just what I've gotten from my friends who work there (check the blogs, you'll see the sentiments and realities). This spokeshole announcement is just delayed reaction to machinations set in motion long ago. For the few that care enough, plz post about what Yahoo's doing that's fantastic and new that's showing growth.
P.S. This is not ANTI YAHOO FUD, but my personal conclusions from what I know. Take it with a grain of salt and an eye for how you can find out for yourself.
I love it when people tell me what I am, but what really gets me is when someone's denial overshadow's their common sense.
Item finding isn't even one of the major categories of play in an RPG
The masses differ and why aren't the ascribing to your very shiny outlook on what an RPG is? This must mean you are smart and everyone else is stupid not to see the truth! X-Files was my favorite show too, when I was a loner.
The real problem with WoW is that it isn't an RPG and it isn't for people who traditionally like RPG
It isnt an RPG when you're deciding what everyone else should think an RPG is...do you see the flawed logic? It isn't a flawed game at all, as it not only meets the criteria of an RPG but it has consistent mass-appeal. The role-playing aspect is in any social game, just not the ridiculous fantasy roles that you THINK (for whatever delusional reasons you come up with) should exist. There's nothing more glamourous about someone who roleplays a guild leader than someone who roleplays Glorfindel. The latter is very probably dysfunctional, but that's just inconvenient for people to admit.
There's nothing special about taking an RTS and making it better. Ubisoft did it with Conquest: Frontier Wars and now Relic has done it with Company of Heroes. Nobody claims that those were the best games those companies ever made because that's RELATIVELY easy. The real trick is making an entire world and an engine that DISTILLS an RPG down to what it's about, item finding. D2 is much better technically, creatively, and for the genre (turns out that's what most people like) IMO.
A 64% decline in sales from last year is a complete rout and there's absolutely no data to state otherwise, lemme know when you have something on the dismal sales from a private company...a really intelligent response would be "I called a distributor and they said" but you'll find what I found in talking to those in Orange County (see http://www.fs-collectibles.com/ where you buy CCG/RPG materials wholesale).
There's good reason WW joined with CCP, it is simply following the consumer base.
Try to back up your assertions with something resembling research.

I can get a 25 inch viewable CRT for $70. I still dont see the point of paying 1500 for 42.

YMMV
Quit ot write your assessment, including any objections you have or see others having. Ask to have it in writing and go do it.

No he wasn't making a point, or "logical argument". He was using a fallacy to make a point. Stay in school.

In other news SpiderCo was sued by Black & Decker under the DMCA for facilitating the cutting of small pipes. I'm sorry, I got nothin.
