This is true. It is not just the fault of the left. Had Hillary run I guarantee that the Trump supporters would have been in the streets protesting against a "rigged" election.
The problem is that we had two candidates who weren't very good at campaigning, two candidates who were very much hated by the other team, both of them spent most of the time with negative campaigning, and half of eligible voters stayed home and didn't bother to vote. I know a lot of people who voted for Trump but none of them actually like Trump, he's their hold-your-nose candidate. With half of the electorate abstaining (and who can blame them) it would not take much to have swayed that needle off of the center. So neither side should be claiming the high ground, neither side has a clear outright majority and certainly not a mandate, so telling one side or the other to just suck it up and shut up for four years is absurd (since when in this country has the opposition ever shut up?).
Probably, why not? Some people seem to have a chip on their shoulder, they see any action as a repudiation of how they voted. However if Clinton had one there would still be stores, and protests. It's all the same in the long run.
Doesn't matter, this is stuff they should have learned in school. Even in high school if they decided to skip college. Even if they go to college I think they just don't bother learning. A computer to many developers is just a magical black box. If the math comes out wrong they switch from float to doubles. If they math is still wrong they complain about the computer (seriously I had professional physicists try to tell me that the VAX was broken because the numbers were coming out wrong). A lot of developers don't even understand integers to be honest, like 2's complement, overflow, fixed point, etc.
I never liked them. I had access to the arpanet, USENET, and such, so going home to use a slow modem to get to a server that abused you because your upload to download ratio was too low was not needed.
There is almost no chance of him being right here. A slightly higher chance than the world turning out to be flat after all, but still.
But it's not doom and gloom. If humans got us into this situation then it's possible to slow it down. If we can't even do that we can at least mitigate the problems by planning for them.
I mean sheesh, Clinton supporters weren't defeatists, the Trump supporters weren't defeatists, why are we giving up now?
They do campaign in sure-fire states like California, New York, and Texas. They campaign there for the campaign donations from the established base rather than dealing with undecided voters; but they do have to jump through the hoops and appear to be appealing to the state.
As it is, the candidates are basically required to campaign in lots of varied states. If it was based on popular vote only, they'd campaign only in California, Texas, New York Illinois, and Florida. Montana and New Hampshire would never see another presidential candidate ever again.
Yes and no. There are also good things about the electoral college, mostly the same reasons we grant each state 2 senators regardless of size. It grants regions of the country a say in the government even if they are small. This prevents a tyranny of the majority. That's why we can't just vote that Montana be the garbage dump for all waste from the rest of the country.
The "downside" to some people is that electoral college and the senate tend to skew Republican. But that's only a downside if you're not a Republican. Also be very careful what one wishes for. Politics are not static. If you make a major change to rebalance everything then in a decade or two there may be a reversal and find out that the majority has changed, or you may move to the midwest, or some other unexpected consequence.
This electoral college and the senate was set up when the different states were not at all homogenous. People say this is outdate. However today we are still not at all homogenous.
I think the history of the senate is not a bad one. They tend to be much slower to act and more deliberative than the more reaction based house of representatives.
Resumably, the remaining members of congress approved it, as well as the legislature of West Virginia, but the legislature of rebel Virginia abstained.
I have plenty of good things to say about the US. However we are often late with our payments to UN, we have plenty of citizens who feel we should pull out of it anyway. We are indeed somewhat bullies in the economic realm. We push our ideas of intellectual property laws on others, put restrictions on trade deals based upon other countries changing their laws first, etc. Of course this comes and goes, it depends upon the political climate of the country at the time. This time around we have elected someone who claimed NATO was a waste of money, who wants to tear up existing trade deals, etc (of course there may be good reason to dislike some trade deals, which is something to deal with before they're ratified). So of course other countries are a bit nervous.
Everyone likes to point fingers about who's fault it was. The story from Gore vs Bush should have been to not take a large voting bloc for granted. Instead what seemed to happen then is that all the Democrats accused the Greens for not being loyal to the party they didn't belong to. Fast forward, are we going to see that same idiotic accusation that it's someone else's fault? Hillary lost the election, not the voters who voted for Johnson/Stein/etc. Own up to the fact that the candidate did not do well for many reasons.
The same attitude happened when she was running against Obama. There were a lot of accusations that Obama was getting in the way of Hillary's turn, despite the fact that Obama was a huge favorite and seen as much more electable.
This is nothing new though. Both parties grew up on the party machine system where smoke filled back rooms decide who gets to be on the ballots. The DNC machine was still working this time around, whereas the RNC machine sputtered to a halt. It was "supposed" to be Jeb's turn by all accounts.
Gingrich who accused Clinton of having poor morals was also getting some on the side while his wife as in the hospital dying of cancer. The irony is that the disgraced Gingrich might actually show up in Trump's cabinet... That would be a confirmation hearing worth watching.
The perjury was not what I would consider high crimes and misdemeanors. This is normally prosecuted for when there's another crime to go with it. This perjury was not done to obstruct justice, but sheer embarrassment to have to confess to an affair in public rather than privately. As for sexual assault there is zero evidence uncovered or presented and was not a part of the impeachment.
Andrew Johnson, though a Democrat, was Lincoln's vice president. This was the National Unity ticket. His impeachment was not over anything someone today would call serious. He was impeached because the Republicans after the war hated him for being a southern Democrat, and the Republicans did want to impose strong punitive measures on the south (which they eventually did). They passed a law forbidding him to fire any cabinet member that he inherited from Lincoln. When he did fire them for insubordination they started the impeachment. 100% political.
(While we think of Lincoln as a hero, many of the top Republicans who succeeded him after the war, like Grant, were outright bastards. If Johnson had prevailed over them with his way of trying to re-integrate with the south and not punish them I think we'd be much better off today as a more unified nation.)
Similarly, Clinton's impeachment was 99.999% political. The legislature hated him and wanted any reason no matter how slim to impeach. He lied under oath about something almost no one would ever confess to in public in front of a spouse. Yes technically perjury but also almost no one else would ever go to jail for the same thing. The worst maybe is the judge rules for contempt of court. Otherwise it's something you tack on to a larger crime to get a larger sentence (ie, lying to obstruct justice). This disgusted both Democrats and Republicans that such an incident would be considered to be high crimes and misdemeanors.
Nixon, if he had been impeached, at least would have been over actual misdeeds while in office.
The irony is that Trump is pretty much an elitist city person. Trump is putting on a suit for dinner and eating the raw fish and drinking coffee from tiny cups and going to the opera and is on first name basis with many famous gays and lesbians and only goes to church for weddings and funerals.
On the other hand, most of California dislikes the sort of elitist person as well. Everyone in California laughs at the hipsters except the hipsters, we all think that green tea colonics is the stupidest thing ever and laugh even harder. The sorts of people that look so weird to the someone from Kansas also look weird to most Californians.
Yes but the issue is more complicated than the simplistic politics. We have lots of undocumented workers showing up each day; but we ALSO have lots of undocumented workers leaving the US each day voluntarily. The net increase is much much smaller than what many politicians are implying. There have been periods of time when more undocumented workers left the US than arrived and this happened without extra enforcement. Many of these workers are taking seasonal and temp jobs and then going back to their real homes.
An oddity that happens sometimes is that when border enforcement is cracked down then it becomes much more risky to go back home to Mexico and Central America and come back later. So more workers then stay in America when they normally would have migrated back home. Which means that a crackdown can cause the number of undocumented workers in the US to go up.
When you get down to it, 90%+ of the undocumented workers are indeed doing work that is very difficult to get domestic workers to do. Many industries rely on this migrant labor to keep costs down, and many of these industries are in very solid conservative districts. These aren't liberals sneaking in Mexicans, these are conservatives making use of cheap labor. Yes, this can mean wages can below minimum wage but it's nice to see conservatives defending the minimum wage now and then. The other thing you see a lot is people seeing a dark skinned hispanic worker and assuming this person must be illegal; but this is not necessarily true, it is not so easy to tell the difference. Many hispanics come from families that settled in the southwest US before there were any gringos there.
Last night though Dow was way down in after hours trading. Always happens after some sort of unexpected event though. If it's gone up since then that's good.
Some who voted against him, you mean. American voters aren't one dimensional. We have pro-gun lesbian hedge fund managers living across the street from anti-gun evangelical illegal immigrants!

Oh, you miss the good old days when German police kept strict records on everyone?

Ha, I know you're a phony! It's pronounced "pres'dent".
Slashdot is getting popular! We're getting lots of poeple who know nothing about science showing up now, just like Facebook and Twitter!
The factor is not climate science. The factor is how well will my oil, coal, and timber stocks do if the science is accurate.

This is California. You're Canada. Forget about the culture shock, it's the weather shock that will kill us off!
