Trump's got D&D style charisma though, an 18. No personal magnetism, no flowery words, a grating personality, but it says 18 on his character sheet.
He tells the GM "I convince the dragon to free the princess and give me its gold". GM says "you can't do that, that's stupid." Trump says "I'm rolling my dice against my charisma anyway", and rolls. GM says "damn, it actually worked!"

The stock averages aren't dropping because of a hissy fit, but because they know that trade is going to be badly disrupted and it's time to put that money someplace safe until it blows over.

Another reason this election was just insane through and through. I don't think America is sexist/racist/xenophobic because we didn't vote for Hillary. It's sexist/racist/xenophobic because we elected someone who is very clearly sexist/racist/xenophobic. Republicans could have chosen someone more sane than Trump - Bush, Fiorina, Christie, Graham, Kasich (my favorite in the lot), Pataki, or even Paul and Cruz. But no, the bottom of the barrel was scraped and what came up kept winning.

The win for Trump was not a victory of the Republican party. Trump is very much an anti-Republican candidate.

Oh I saw that, as a non-partisan voter. I've got friends and family who have a deep seated hatred of Hillary, of muslims, of Hillary having a muslim aide, of Obamacare, etc. All of that backed up by tons and tons of conspiracy filled web sites. People honestly believed that Hillary actually was the most corrupt presidential candidate either (apparently they don't own any history books). They've hated her for 25 years ever since she said she preferred working instead of staying home and baking cookies; which made her a symbol for everything they think went wrong with America since the 50s. This is a visceral feeling for those fighting in the trenches of the culture wars. And the slogan "make America great again" - the implication here in case Democrats missed it, is that America is currently not very great at all (I think a good campaign strategy for Hillary would have been to claim that America is already great).

Seriously, I had to listen to a lot of ranting on the phone from my mother who was nearly in tears thinking that Hillary might win, claiming that this was the last chance ever to save America.

Yup, Hillary had a boring campaign. Too much of it was based on fear of Trump. Of course Trump's campaign was all about fear of Hillary too. Then there will be midterm elections. History shows these tend to be a reversal of trends when the voters realize that their mistakes; witness the Gingrich predictions of a permanent republican majority quickly vanishing when they overreached. This time around, the voters will quickly figure out their mistake especially those who think Trump is just another Republican, all those who stayed home this time around will remember to vote, and so forth.

Basically most Americans don't like things getting done in government when there's not a strong agreement on both sides. When one side or the other get the upper hand they inevitably get slapped back down.

Hacking one side but not the other is clearly politicialy biased, and deserving of jail time if ever there was someone deserving of jail time for a DDoS. This is not civil disobedience but is clearly assholish destruction. Democracy needs to have fair and open elections that are not tweaked because some kid in a basement thinks that his preferred moron for office is better than another moron for office. All voices need to be heard so trying to force some voices to shut up is anti-democratic.

  12. Being against Trump is not the same as being the propaganda wing of the Democratic party! Trump is only Republican because that's the party who nominated him, he is not a long term believer in the Republican party platform, he is on record openly favoring stances in direct opposition to the standard Republican line although he claims "I never said that". If anyone other than Hillary were running then the Republicans as a whole would be abandoning Trump. The few major Republicans who support Trump do so while wringing their hands.

So sorry, but Bill O'Reilly and Megan Kelly are not part of the Democratic party propaganda machine in any way. They just don't happen to like that blowhard moron that managed to win at the primaries. (never mind that Trump whined and threw a fit with Kelly's softball questions to him that any halfway decent Republican candidate could have deflected)

So I don't like Trump. Does not mean I like Clinton. Stop thinking of everything as having only two sides, that's simplistic thinking reserved for sporting events. Politics should be more complex then a moronic us-versus-them mentality.

Sure many media outlets may be favoring or endorsing Clinton but at the same time they're giving far more air time to Trump. Clinton's policy views about Central America - boring! Trump's crazy off-the-cuff remark of the day - gold mine!

Hillary's the candidate because the media just assumed she'd be the Democratic candidate (it was pre-ordained), and she appeared a bit annoyed the Bernie didn't drop out like he was instructed to. Likewise Jeb was pre-ordained and we were preparing for the a creation of the American hereditary monarchy, but then Trump turned out to be the train wreck that all the cameras focused on.

  17. Time zones are both good and bad. The concept of having local time is very important if you ever have to work over the phone or internet with people in other zones. In that situation, having time zones is very annoying; but getting rid of time zones will also be very annoying only in different ways. Ok, one co-worker is 7 hours ahead of me, one co-worker is 7 hours behind (and a different day). With time zones I just need to do easy arithmetic to know when it's morning for them or not. Getting rid of time zones means when one says "dammit, it's 11am, why'd you wake me so early?!"

Neither solution really gets rid of having to do the arithmetic. Sure, if you only deal with people in your own time zone then it's not so bad to just remap the times. People will relearn. That's the naive assumption in the summary up top. But after all that effort nothing of importance has happened, dealing with people who were formerly in different time zones did not get any easier. You still screw up by scheduling the meeting at 11am unless you continue to do the mental calculations to know that it's still dark outside for some people.

So for accuracy anyone doing something scientific or with engineering knows to use UTC. Any half way decent computer uses UTC and only something archaic sticks with local time. However the necessary conversions can be done easily and automatically. Hard part is convincing the marketing people to allow the right thing. Store all times at UTC and never ever store as local time, then convert to local time when displaying the time. Same as any localization, keep the internal and stored data in a standard universal format and do the conversion during input and output when needed.

One solution for human beings is to use technology - make it very easy to show multiple times at once. When I schedule a meeting I'd like to see time zones for all people involved. If I pick up a phone to call someone I'd like to see their local time listed on the phone. As for sending a birthday greeting to Australia from the US, you just gotta remember to send it a day early.

But daylight savings time, dump it.

Which is absurd, but we have too many people who believe any thing they read on the internet (and yes, I can spot the irony in posting this :-). 5 years of Whitewater investigations and nothing came of it. Doesn't mean they're innocent but so far there's no evidence that they're guilty. And the murder stuff, it's pure unadulterated conspiracy hogwash.

  22. Trump has already listed far more things that he's going to do on the first day in office than can be done in 24 hours. He sort of acts like the president has dictatorial powers, so if he gets elected he's in for a big surprise. Even the executive level departments aren't under direct control of the president; he can't eliminate a department by himself, he can't demand that the justice department arrest anyone, and if Obama couldn't have his own Blackberry then Trump certainly won't be able to be using Twitter at 3am.

  23. Don't forget, Trump also has legal troubles coming up with the Trump University suit. Civil and not criminal, but still some serious trouble.

Petraeus went to jail for more than what Clinton did. Petraeus knowingly passed on secrets to someone he knew did not have clearance. The FBI so far has only determined that Clinton made bad mistakes, had poor judgement, and other things you don't want to see in a president, but was not knowingly passing on secrets to anyone. And the FBI does not generally prosecute for messing up security procedures unless it can be tacked onto another crime (though it will get you fired and you lose your clearance).

But then put this into perspective of a 30+ year of trying to "get" the Clintons on something, there's a deep seated hatred there. So much so that the "only Christians can be president" camp are still voting for this obvious pretender and treating him as the standard bearer for family values.
