    FWIW I use the serrated edge to open packaging and just slice a big enough hole, then finish by stretching the plastic with my hands until the goodie comes out.

    I almost never get scratched by the plastic, and never by the knife.

    on such a poor machine. You would have been much better off to use Puppy, or if even that's too slow for you, then Damn Small Linux.

    Xubuntu needs 256MB of RAM to run decently, and probably a faster processor than that Celeron.

    Yeah, but thing is, the Chinese government won't look too kindly on us sending police to investigate a massacre in their country. Probably a bunch of their citizens would be pissed, too, and see it as more American imperialism.

    I'll upgrade my 8.04 system at some point, maybe in a month once they've gotten the worst bugs worked out. I'd consider waiting for 8.10, but that's not a supported upgrade path.

    Of course a countryman isn't worth more than a foreigner. It is just as bad to have a hundred Iraqis massacred as it is a hundred Americans, or a hundred Chinese political dissidents.

    However, we can't do as much to punish the murderers of those Chinese or of the Iraqis. Our rule of law does not apply over there, and we can't send an FBI agent round to arrest them.

    Last I checked (years ago) the base pay for private soldiers wasn't all that good, unless you're single and have no kids. How much does, say, an E-3 make with combat pay, etc.?

    If the dev kits are free, more games will be made for the platform, and that leads to more money to Sony because of more console sales.

    This is an older platform, true, but that would definitely be true for newer stuff like the PS3.

    Basically. Remember also that their goal from 2000-2006 was to establish a permanent Republican majority in government.

    There are no principles involved, just lust for power and money.

    That said, I am wary of the government being completely in the hands of the Democrats, but history has at least showed that dissent is allowed in that party, unlike the Republicans.

    That's what people thought about Bush in 2000: that he didn't necessarily know everything about running the country, but he would surround himself with competent advisers.

    I don't think that necessarily worked.

    The local paper endorsed Roy Blunt for office again -- every time they've done it, they bring up his seniority and power to bring home the bacon, never mind that he was one of Bush's chief allies and enablers, and thus shares responsibility for Bush's many fuckups.
