If you've got money to burn and a loved one who's hard to buy for, a US retailer has come up with the perfect gift: A flying car. Click to see larger image --AP
The US$3.5 million ($5.8m) M400 Skycar - pictured above with a rather jealous Santa and his helper - can glide through the air at a nifty 560kmh and take off and land vertically like a helicopter.
It's described in the Neiman Marcus Christmas catalogue as being as safe, affordable and easy to operate as a regular sedan.
It's also fuel-efficient, averaging 9km per litre, and environmentally friendly, being fuelled by alcohol instead petrol.
'A limited number of M400s is expected to be available within the next three years, but you can purchase the actual prototype for yourself or your favourite commuter now,' the catalogue states.
The price tag does not include delivery or permission to operate in the buyer's home country.
The luxury retailer's annual Christmas book of gifts for the rich and richer, first published in 1926, also includes a private Elton John concert for US$1.5 million - the money goes to John's Aids foundation - a US$65,000 IndyCar race simulator, a $1.2 million jewellery collection and a US$90,000 'levitating sculpture'.
It will be mailed to more than two million households worldwide this week. - Reuters.
Fnord is that funny feeling you get when you reach for the
Snickers bar and come back holding a slurpee.
Fnord is the 43 1/3rd state, next to Wyoming. Fnord is this really, really tall mountain. Fnord is the reason boxes of condoms carry twelve instead of ten..... and of course: Fnord is a car that cannot crash!:-)))
A friend of mine from Romania needed some books, he tried to get them sent to another friend in Germany, but HIS credit card was not accepted, because it was a Romanian card.
He tried several different aproaches and nothing worked, to make the story short. Finally he contacted me, in the US. I paid for the books with my paypal, made the seller ship them to his home and he wired me the money.
A big pain in the butt, just for a couple of books if you ask me:-(
Couldn't they use instead of a fan an "ionic breeze" system like the one the sharper image uses in its air purifiers?
I've been thinking of those for a long time cause they are really silent and they do move air. But I really do not know if they can work inside a computer cage.
"it emits a rather noisy 65 dba at 500 feet. Interestingly, with a fuel consumption of 20 miles to the gallon on the road, it's rather more economical than a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) and looks positively eco-friendly compared to a Hummer."
How about NOISE POLLUTION???? 65 dba at 500 feet. Yeah that's eco friendly in my book!!!
Actually this is probably a better gauge on inflation than the fictitious numbers they're feeding us from the goverment statistics.
All I know is, my montly bills are up: electricity, gas and phone. My market bill is bigger now than last year... and I don't think I am eating anything different. Everything is up except for the inflation numbers... go figure eh:-/
I agree, not to talk about the eye strain from NTSC either :-(

Hmmmmmmm ok I get your reasoning... it's like the Double Super-Secret Background thingy in Rovegate.
:-)
I was more on the line of, you should worship God and believe in Santa... a dyslexic should then worship Dog and believe in Satan.
But I've got you, it works both ways.
---News flash - turns out the Bible was written by a dyslexic - you must worship DOG and believe in Santa.---
Eh, I do not mean to nitpick but... should't that read DOG and SATAN?
That is why it is so important to have a MD5 attached to your sig!
Well, wouldn't that make the whole system insecure?
As in, anybody could bring their own USB bootable hd to any computer and gain access... Or am I missing something here?
i gave up on that idea after my hair started smoking
heh, that depends on your point of view... my sig includes de checksum otherwise you couldn't read it. :-O
who's counting? :-/
Tell me it ain't so Intel :-(
pico pico pico pico! 'nuf said!!!
Hey, that should read "Fnord" not "Ford"!
.... :-)))

heh, I googled your sig:
Did you mean to search for: "The literacy level of our children are appealing"
ROFL
Please, don't anthropomorphize cats, WE don't like it! >-/
Thanks, great answer.

I've found a "Silica aerogel photo gallery"
http://eande.lbl.gov/ECS/aerogels/saphoto.htm
Some of the pics are really amazing. Cool stuff!!!
Could aerogel be formed with some other gas other than air, like pure hydrogen? Would it become lighter than air then and float around?
Just a thought, maybe some slashdotter knows, I've read the aerogel facts from the JPL page but it doesn't mention anything about this.
Easy does it. You don't need a big surveillance program, just add a bug to your email that "grabs" the reader's IP addy and voila!
Easy does it, apply the KISS principle to life.
