  1. Re:kinda true on What's So Precious About Bad Software? · · Score: 5, Interesting

Years ago I posted the source to a neural net implementation that I did while in school. It was a very simple one with just regular back propagation, and the code was documented with examples. Soon after that I started receiving all kinds of email asking for help with the code from people clearly trying to use it to do their Comp Sci homeworks or projects. I started out with courteous and helpful replies, but at some point people ask questions which really have nothing to do with the software (and more to do with whatever that person is working on) -- to the point where they are wasting your time and you have to cut them off. Then they get annoyed and start insulting you.

First, let me preface this by saying that I am writing this reply from my Linux desktop that I exclusively use at home, so I am not a "shill".

I agree with the GP that there is software that is worth paying for simply because there is nothing that comes close in the Free Software world. If the gain in productivity from buying simply outweighs the cost I would pay, it's simple pragmatism to buy it. There is a lot of specialized software that comes in this category including CAD, 3D modeling, and even stuff like Visual Studio, which has no viable equivalent in the free software world.

Not every company can afford to hire programmers to write their internal use software. From a practical standpoint, an architecture firm doesn't necessarily want to hire someone to write a CAD application internally. Why is it not valid for them to pay someone else (like a commercial software company) to do it for them? How is that different than contracting a construction job to someone else? Why should such software come for free?

This is all fine and good. But can you tell me, if I write software for a living -- who will pay me so that I don't starve to death if all software was free? The majority of programmers working on free software also have a day job working on non-free software for said large evil corporations (e.g. IBM) so that they can feed their families.

I use Bell WiMAX in Montreal. I think Bell and Rogers have a joint venture for this service in Canada actually. I subscribed for a 3 Mbit/s service and I have to say even though cable modem and DSL are supposed to be faster in theory, the WiMAX is the fastest home connection I've ever had. It could be that it is not very popular yet so they have lots of free bandwidth floating around, in addition to it being a dedicated frequency. Also, I have had no service outages for the 3 months I've had this connection.

I come from a low level graphics programming background. Having played around with the XNA betas that have been out for a while, I must say that XNA is probably the easiest way to get an amateur started with DirectX programming and game development. It seems almost like Microsoft is trying to get the grass roots hooked onto the platform so that the next generation of game programmers prefer the MS platform.

Oh, and people who compare XNA to game engines like Ogre are missing the point. XNA is not a game engine, it's more of a development tool/platform. It does come with lots of library code, but it's not a full-fledged game engine.
