"I'm not an anti-semite, I'm just anti-Israel" ranks up with "I'm not a racist, some of my best friends are (black, hispanic, asian, etc)" on the bullshit-o-meter, buddy. That is probably the lamest argument I've seen on Slashdot. Since when is opposing a country's policies the same as being racist?

I'm an opponent of US policies on torture and foreign intervention. Does that make me prejudiced against americans? (hint: slashdot is a US site)

What a load of crap. People love to spout how the US respects free speech, while in fact it does nothing of the sort.

Okay, so you can announce to the world how you think everyone should hate *insertminoritygrouphere*, but seriously, who gives a flying fuck? That sort of crap is boring these days. The vast majority of people just don't take bigots seriously anymore because they are really just illustrating their own ignorance and end up alienating themselves. For an example, you just have to look at the reaction Mel Gibson got to his drunken comments about jews.

    Anyway, nearlyfreespeech guidelines say:

You may not upload, publish, or otherwise use the Services to make available any Content that:
    * violates the laws of the United States of America; or
    * you are contractually prohibited from distributing; or
    * is tortious under the laws of the United States of America; or
    * your distribution of which infringes upon the intellectual property rights of others; or
    * you otherwise do not have the legal right to distribute. This means that you can't post anything that the US corporate-conglomerate/government has deemed inappropriate. This includes source code for software to watch DVDs on linux, or even advertisements for Cuban holidays for fucks sake!

But it's okay! you're allowed to say you hate a minority group!! /sarcasm> No, I think I'll take my bigot-free Cuban-affiliated DVD-watching blog thanks.

All this bleating about how the US respects free speech is fucking pathetic.

  10. Better article and detail on Nuked Coral Reef Bounces Back · · Score: 5, Informative
    More informative article here: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/04/080415101021.htm

The full story is that although some of the corals have bounced back remarkably, the nuking has also resulted in the localised extinction of some more sensitive sensitive species

However the research has also revealed a disturbingly high level of loss of coral species from the atoll. Compared with a famous study made before the atomic tests were carried out, the team established that 42 species were missing compared to the early 1950s. At least 28 of these species losses appear to be genuine local extinctions probably due to the 23 bombs that were exploded there from 1946-58, or the resulting radioactivity, increased nutrient levels and smothering from fine sediments. Article also has some good stats on the nuking itself:

One of the most interesting aspects is that the team dived into the vast Bravo Crater left in 1954 by the most powerful American atom bomb ever exploded (15 megatonnes - a thousand times more powerful than the Hiroshima bomb). The Bravo bomb vapourised three islands, raised water temperatures to 55,000 degrees, shook islands 200 kilometers away and left a crater 2km wide and 73m deep.

This is certainly not restricted to the IT industry.
In my experience working in a large petroleum company I have seen the exact same thing - high turnover of good engineers, with a few competent people who stay on dotted around the organisation, but also a lot of dead weight.

However this is not news. This is just what HR battles every day in large orgainisations - balancing pay, benefits, career advancement etc. against turnover rates, to try to make staying on more attractive. Which is hard because the grass is always greener...
