  2. in other flaws...I mean news...[semi-OT] on Microsoft Sits on Security Flaw for Six Months · · Score: 5, Interesting

Looks like there is another worm out there spreading fast...its spreading through AIM by sending out links to a site at wgutv.com that masquerades as being a news site proclaiming Osama has been captured. The site downloads an executable (which appears to be digitally signed with a cert issued by Thawte) which, at the least, starts propagating to other AIM buddies. Can't find anything on NAI or Symantec--anyone else seen this in the past 3 hours? (since about 2 PM EST)?

Actually, although you are right about it having a Byzantine list of dependencies--it has NOT been ported to Gnome 2 yet (that is part of the problem!), plus it is the only application of its kind. In my mind this is a Killer App (TM), which is one main reason I have for using Linux and staying with it...I am certainly on my way over to #gnucash to help out as much as I can.

  6. Not so much a win-win as you think on Microsoft's Patent Problem · · Score: 2, Insightful

Realize that it would not be in Microsoft's best interests to reform patent laws--do not forget the nice sizeable patent portfolio that they have (including 2 patents of their own for a DRM OS).

No, the likely outcome of this is that MS will settle this out of court for a nice big fat fee from its cash horde, and patents will continue to stifle competition and innovation, and MS will not be delayed in implementing DRM (likely that, as they did with the anti-trust suit, they will most likely continue implementing DRM as this goes along regardless of the court action).

This is not meant as a flame, but take it as you will.

Why do /.ers feel the need to have the herd mentality about products and politics especially? Are that many people coming here to have their opinions spoon-fed to them that they have to have a stamp of approval on products WE think are good (or reject those that WE feel are bad)?

Whatever happened to reading sources and forming a coherent opinion all your own?

Or am I expecting too much?

  8. Re:MS on Appeals Court Sides With Microsoft On Java · · Score: 2, Informative
Yes, the ruling only partly strikes down the injuction; MS still cannot ship their own version of java, but they are not forced to include Sun's version.
In granting the mandatory injunction, the district court acknowledged that its "must-carry" mandatory preliminary injunction was unprecedented, but explained it was necessary in the extraordinary circumstances of this case to prevent future "tipping" from Sun to Microsoft in an emerging middleware market - a market for "general purpose, Internet-enabled distributed computing platforms" that is distinct from the PC operating systems market that Sun alleged was being illegally monopolized by Microsoft... Because the district court was unable to find immediate irreparable harm and because it entered a preliminary injunction that does not aid or protect the court's ability to enter final relief on Sun's PC-operating-systems monopolization claim, we vacate the mandatory preliminary injunction. With respect to the preliminary injunction prohibiting Microsoft from distributing products that infringe Sun's copyright interests, however, we conclude that the district court did not err in construing the scope of the license granted by Sun to Microsoft, nor did it abuse its discretion in entering the injunction. Accordingly, we affirm that preliminary injunction.
  9. Re:Whats wrong with my money? on New Movie Download Pay Service · · Score: 2, Interesting

While I agree that this does not force anyone to download warez, it would be fighting illegal tactics with illegal tactics. Since the movie industry divides markets (which many other countries such as Australia have banned as illegal business practices) and gives these "regions" as they call them different release times and prices (price fixing anyone?), some people might believe that illegally downloading the movies to get around that problem fixes things. Two rights do not make a wrong, but some people look at it that way...

  10. Re:"Community Values" on Indianapolis Bans Violent Video Games · · Score: 1

I understand that you may not agree with "Community Values" arguements, but this is not intended to impose any person's values on any adult in the community. The purpose is simply to give parents the same choice in a video arcade that they supposedly have in the movie theatre (not that those regulations tend to be observed since the people selling the tickets are often not even old enough to see the movies they are selling the tickets for). I am very much against censorship, but sometimes people should be allowed within their community to impose restrictions that they see fit. If you don't live in Indianapolis, why are you concerned about this: It's a _City Ordinance_.

  11. Corporate Linux on DeCSS Author Arrested · · Score: 1

Does anyone know if the new public Linux corporations (ie RH, VA, Andover, etc.) have said/are going to say anything official about this situation? It would be greatly appreciated by the community if the companies which have gotten rich off the OS movement would show some support in the media for the real issues behind this abuse of governmental power. It would really give more weight to the truth in the court of public opinion if they would say something.
