But who just types in notepad for 11 hours on a "high end" laptop? I'd assume that buyers of a "high end"laptop would actually be using it for, you know, "high end" applications. What use is it for performance users when it lasts just as long as any other laptop when running full power?

Then I guess you won't mind when all the churches stop handing out free meals and homes to the needy? Or sponsor large blood drives? Or give out free counseling to those in need? If Scientology was wiped from the map, the world would be a better place in every possible way, and you can't say that for the Christian church. I say this as an entirely non-religious person... Religion is silly to me either way.

Some people have a higher standard of performance and a higher budget. Although it might not be the best performance per dollar in ALL price ranges, the upper end Intels will give you the best performance per dollar if you're budget allows. Not only that, the performance changes per the application. I'm not gonna buy a $400 computer just because it has the best performance per dollar ratio of all computers made if it can't run the software I need it to.

It IS normal. Growth is not possible for any long length of time. You can pull the growth forward through the use of debt, but that eventually comes back to bite you and you get a crash. If no one messes with the system to the extremes that they have in recent decades and the crooks are removed, the "booms" and "busts" don't occur in any significant order of magnitude.

  20. Re:The problem is not an efficient algorithm on What Computer Science Can Teach Economics · · Score: 1

It doesn't matter if wealth grows at an exponential rate if debt grows at an exponential rate that is greater. Graph two lines out, one at a 5% increase, the other at an 8% increase out 30 years for a clear picture of what happens, or I should say, what happened. Most of the "wealth creation" we've had recently is false wealth, or pulled forward demand. Created thanks to free flowing credit. We've reached a point where servicing the debt that payed for that "wealth" is becoming increasingly painful to do.

Except that's a flawed analogy. It's more like if you set up a lounge for legal drinking, and a lot of people brought drugs to the place. Does that mean it should be shut down?

Yes. Speaking of a flawed analogy, lets use your analogy. The club/lounge owner would be responsible for getting rid of the drug users. It's not like they're in the back room, or doing it under the table. They're coming up to the bar and saying, "No, I don't want a drink, I'm just gonna snort some lines off the counter." In what city would that club NOT get shut down?

And that assumes it actually WAS set up to be a legal torrent tracker! As others have pointed out, it's called The PIRATE Bay!
