  1. Stupid and dangerous on Ebay Fined $61M By French Court For Sales of Fake Goods · · Score: 5, Interesting

This is not the first time that French courts show a complete misunderstanding of how the Internet works... And this goes even further than net economics.

Most french used cars are still sold via a single newspaper called "La Centrale des Particuliers". Should this newspaper verify that each car is rightfully owned by its seller ? I cannot imagine any judge trying to enforce this...

Hopefully, this judgment shall be broken by the "Cour de Cassation", because it does not make any sense. Maybe the judge was only trying to get some publicity. This happens a lot,

This is true, but how much time do you think it will take ? My guess is it will take another 10-15 years, and it is going to take a lot more than being an ISO standard. Personnally, i never received an ODF document by email. The fact that what I say is not pleasant does not make it less true...

OpenOffice.org has ODF and it is an undisputed ISO standard. Microsoft Word has DOC, and it is an undisputed industry standard. And that is one of the main reasons why a lot of people, and therefore a lot of computer manufacturers stick to Windows. An ISO standard is nothing if it is not followed by the industry.

Well, hopefully, it doesn't seem like it has been bought by Hollywood, but rather by the producers of many european filmmakers, such as Michael Haneke. It is quite ironic, because that movie could have been made a while ago, in France, while PK Dick was still alive.

Sure, it's helpful. It's sort of like all of these things. Interoperability is a two-way street -- the other guy takes share from you and you take share from the other guy -- and always will be. Everything that sort of starts with the word "interoperability" has that characteristic. Our customers benefit, which is a great thing. We go in thinking we have an opportunity to benefit, you're looking for risks, the risks I guess are that interoperability does more harm than good. I don't think that's likely, but nonetheless it's there for us and it's also there for the guys you interoperate with. Sure, I'm not a native english speaker, but it seems to me that nothing in the above makes sense. Does anybody un derstand what he means ???

Yeah, I recognize that my last sentence was out of place... But could you please tell me what was the need to go Quebec-bashing once again ? I am not even a quebecer, I am french (living in MTL), and I am not really prejudiced over this whole situation. Personnaly, I would like Quebec to be more bilingual, and I recognize English speakers ar an essential part of Quebec... And I also think that all english and french speaking people who have the capacity to do so should make the effort to speak both language. It really didn'ty come out well when I wrote "your kind of people". What I really mean is people who are not willing to make the effort to make this all work, and who prefer to take a leave... But, hey, I'm not in your shoes, so this is your decision :)

Well, it really is a pity for you, but did you realize that Ontario was also officially bilingual ? No ? Maybe this is because french speakers in Ontario get even less rights thant an english speaker in Quebec... And this is also why Quebecers fight so much for their language (and yes it can get quite stupid some times). I am very sorry that you felt it necessary to leave your home place, but frankly, the bilingual people in Quebec don't really miss your kind of people...

Do you know about apt-cacher ? This program will generate a proxy repository containing all the updates you downloaded. This way, you only have to download them once from the Internet. All subsequent updates are made from the LAN. This is really easy to set up, and a lot less cumbersome than having to deal with service-pack like monthly CD updates.

Freedom-to-buy-the -latest-gadget-before-it-gets-elsewhere-in-the world ? Freedom-to-study-without-having-to-get-killed-in-I raq ? Libertatianism is just a perversed form of individualism. That is why it is so popular among people who have the power and money to be autonomous. And mainly in the US. In other places in the world, History has teached people that individualism can also be a poison... People have to stick together.
