I've worked in quite a few Sun shops, and yes, being able to call Sun at 3 in the morning to replace that Enterprise box that just exploded on you YESTERDAY is a very nice thing to have. And not only Sun does that. SGI does that too. For a sysadmin, having working replacement hardware within a few hours is absolutely vital.
This kind of service is hard to get from Free Software. Sure, the free Operating Systems are very good in quality, but the SLA's and support you get from the *nix vendors is just vital.
Surely, this wasn't front-page material, and decided to stuff it in to a section somewhere. But since there's no "Exotic operating systems" or BeOS section in the section list, they decided to stuff it in the BSD section, because they didn't know where else to stuff it.
I myself would have put it in the Developers section, or the Apple section (Since Mr. Gossee used to work at Apple). I don't blame them.
Be glad that they compare Be to the mighty fine BSD line of OSes. Heck, Be's in our camp. Yaay.
That's probably because cable & wireless (one of the hops between me (mainland europe) and/.) is dropping packets on people. My ISP (and maybe yours too) should review their peering agreement. It's been bouncing up and down here for a few days. Weird.
BSD might actually have ran on it. The 4.4BSD, maybe Reno or Tahoe. Heck, the 2.x BSD's might even be supported as well.
I could of course be wrong, but I really think these PDP's ran UNIX. RT11 seems unlikely, since that was a PDP11 OS. Either some V[something] or a BSD unix ran ot it, I am almost positive.
Please do correct me if I'm wrong of course. It's been a while, ya know:)

X mmaps the video mem in it's own process space, show it shows up as a memory hog in ps and top, but isn't.
e.g. if you have one of those matrox parhelia cards with 256 MB ram in there, X will show up as using at lead 256 MB mem + a little bit. So the reports of X being a memory hog are exaggerated.
As for Fresco/Berlin, I hope that there will be an X compat layer so all my old apps will run. It's not a strange request. Lots of operating systems that don't usually run X (BeOS, QNX, Mac OS X, Windows, etc.) have an X server available one can install.
It would be nifty having a rootless X server for Fresco.
I can also be productive in Java, Python, Perl, Eiffel or Smalltalk. What makes C# so special?
I though the whole point of.NET was that the language didn't matter? As long as you have a backend that produces.NET bytecode, you are already in buissness.
I can top you on that... I think I still have my 300 baud acoustical modem (the one you put the phone on, with the rubber lippy things) somewhere in my attic...
:) (no really, I really still got it stashed somewhere...)
Well, since Ellen feiss is a little too young for us past-20 old gitty folk...
What about Kirsten Dunst? Can we ridicule her? I dunno... I have something with redheads, dyed or not.
She looked pretty hot in Spiderman though....

That is a surprise. A linux fanatic..... [snip]

You assume too quickly, grasshopper. I am infact very platform agnostic. All operating systems suck, the unix-like seem to suck less (with the exception of AIX, which does really suck harder than anything I've come across). This stty buissness is in fact SUS (Single UNIX Specification). Not just Linux, mind you. I myself infact am more something of a FreeBSD fanatic, instead of a Linux one.
And I wasn't calling the grandparent an idiot. Let alone that I was blaming anything/anyone other than the broken scripts that created his termcap database for him. (Or if he did make them himself, well, then it's his own fault of course:)
No wonder people are flocking to UNIX. It's idiots like you that are talking out of their collective asses all the time. Especially when the only thing they do is bitch when someone offers informative advice.
Also, a very big peeve of mine is when people see something unixish and _instantly_ assume that it's linux. Those login script entries work just as well under (takes deep breath) FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, Solaris, HPUX, AIX (yes even that one),. UNICOS, Cygwin, IRIX, Xenix, BeOS, Mac OS X, True64 and Digital UNIX, to name but a few.
There end of rant. Move along, nothing to see here...
Sorry, have to jump in here. Do you really resent all other licenses that much that you only use GPL'ed applications? Must be tough living without apps that have other licenses, like the MIT/Athena license (XFree86). Artistic license (Perl), or Python (Python license), and others. Or do you really mean that you resent using software that isn't compatible with GPL?
The 1st and 3rd reason you gave are valid ones, the second needs explanation...
So many people in Holland know English that they won't even speak Dutch to you unless you're completely fluent, or a local.
Favourite prank I tend to play on foreigners:
Foreigner: (trying really hard) "Hoe gaat het?"
Me: "What did you just say about my mother?"
F: "Uh, uh, sorry... I didn't mean to.."
M: "Gotcha! Just kidding!"
Also, teaching foreigners lude words in dutch is lots of fun.
As for the "grokking" "understanding" and "enlightenment", well I tend to use all of those those loosely. It's just my whacky sense of humor I guess...

Nope. Usually "Whoops!" is the last thing you hear. Or the often last head: "Shit!", "Uh oh!" or "Look out!"

You mean a beowulf cluster of these "beowulf clasters"? Imagine the potential!
Why don't you make links with some descriptive text then? Didn't you know slashdot allows a subset of HTML in the posts?
Probably my ass.. Mozilla does that too :)

Karma is, unlike what Taco wants you to believe, directly proportional to the size of your virtual dick.
(Yes, this is a feeble but hopefully successful attempt at humor)
You might have heard of it, it was called "Clippy"

It's not a bug in pine, it's a bug in your termcap database.
