WMA has ogg support. All you need to do is install an extra codec. With all the integration madness in Windows, that can be done automagically. Oh, iTunes? Oh, Apple will catch up soon...
I seem to remember something being mentioned a few days ago about a new ogg-decoding program that didn't require floats, and so this could be the basis for hardware decoders (such as portable ones etc).
Floating point maths is never a problem for hardware encoders. You just need to do your floating point math through fixed point math instead. It's more work for the silicon developers, but certainly not a problem.
In short, like the vast majority of people out there (who don't read slashdot and never have heard of Ogg), going to Ogg would be a step backwards for them. They'd have less choice, less options and would be isolating themselves from everyone else.
What do you mean? All major software mp3 players support ogg. Winamp, Sonique, XMMS, Audion. Well, iTunes not yet, but they'll catch up soon.
How are they isolating themselves if they can just play the damn files? They just gain another format.
Granted, support for hardware players is lacking, but that is being remedied. I predict that next year Ogg Vorbis will be an established format that will rival and even surpass the patent-happy crap that Fraunhofer dishes out.
Didn't you know? Ogg encodes ueber secret subliminal messages into the encoded files that say "dig this audio format.... dig this audio format..." all over.
That would explain it...
(for the humor impaired: yes that was intended to be funny. My music collection is about 35% ogg. I love ogg)
Then your beef isn't with CUPS, it's with Ghostscript. CUPS is great. It also works great on my Mac running OSX Jaguar. And I have _no_ problems rendering TrueType fonts, but that's apple's fault:)
Yep, chimera _is_ nifty. I have it next to Moz in my dock.
nitpick: And it's not based on mozilla, just the rendering engine of mozilla:)
I like chimera a lot too, I just wish it was a bit more configurable from it's Preferences menu thingy. But that's just my quibble with it, it's a minor one.
(There's a lot more to sign language than "Simple English with words missing," though that's a rather common misconception.)
I know that, I'm sorry if it came out this way. I didn't mean that to come out that way:). I know there are different grammar rules. In fact, you made my point better than I made. I thank you for that.
I'll just blame my non-englishness (heck, I'm dutch) and botch up some more context and comprehension:)
Well, what stops you from making an Ogg Vorbis version of this?
The MP3 algorithms may be patented, copyrighted and regulated to hell and back, but the content sure isn't. I assure you it's perfectly allright to re-encode it to something more to your liking.

Maybe someone should make a verbatim transcript of this, or is it already available somewhere? If yes, links please:)
Too bad real sign language won't work though. Because with real sign language, stuff we use in language as filler are left out, and only the most important words are left.
Obviously, computers are quite incapable of filling in the blanks intelligently. Of course they can do a so-so job, but there will be flaws.
What will work is your own sign "language" of course.:)
There's some AWESOME graphics in them thar games! Smooth indoor/outdoor transitions, even rain on your windshield, not to mention a full six degrees of freedom in moving about.
And don't forget the vertigo, and the vomit on your keyboard and the monitor after having gotten motionsickness after playing it for a while...
Uhm, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't blitting just dumping some values into an area of memory that just happens to belong to the video card?
$B800 or $A000 was the address I believe. good enough for MCGA (320x200 256 colors) graphics. I remember the turbo pascal days where one reserved a piece of mem off screen and used Memmove or something to "blit" it in video mem and waiting for vertical retrace to make it smooth.
Basically, I wrote my own blitter in software. It's not as fast as a hardware blitter, but hey, it does the trick.
What's your point?
Floating point maths is never a problem for hardware encoders. You just need to do your floating point math through fixed point math instead. It's more work for the silicon developers, but certainly not a problem.
Just a nitpick. Think nothing of it :)
Don't convert your mp3s. Keep 'em. From now on, if you rip a new cd, use Ogg.
Maybe on a boring afternoon you could re-rip your already ripped cd's to Ogg and send the old mp3s to the bitbucket.
Fraunhofer's mp3pro doesn't have mp3->mp3pro converters. Why should Ogg Vorbis need that?
What do you mean? All major software mp3 players support ogg. Winamp, Sonique, XMMS, Audion. Well, iTunes not yet, but they'll catch up soon.

What i'd really like to see is being able to just copy off a whole ream of fonts in the $X11BASE/lib/x11/fonts dir and have them Just Work (tm).
Sure, a nice GUI type app to tweak stuff like antialiasing and the XftConfig would be nice, but that's not enough.
Then your beef isn't with CUPS, it's with Ghostscript. CUPS is great. It also works great on my Mac running OSX Jaguar. And I have _no_ problems rendering TrueType fonts, but that's apple's fault :)
Oh wait... damn mozilla. Bannerblind is filtering them out again.
ObOntopicQuestion: Shoud we have a DGUG (Dot Gnu Users Group) then?
But I think this would be great for AD&D type games. Guessing from the posting text I think this table might be built just for these kind of games.

You just made Taco a poor man. All he knows is THOSE three cords...
The mixture of 20% oxygen and 80% nitrogen, to allow the lungs of an organism to oxygenate the blood of said organism.
What's that you're breathing there, bub? Care to fork over the royalties?
(Yeah yeah, I get your joke, although it's an old one)
Yes this will work for OSX, I had no trouble viewing your site. And yes, I am using OSX.
Uh...
Oh wait... Never mind...
Geez... I guess I'm so used to my crappy DSL line. I don't even blink at an 8 MB download. I used to though, when I still was on single channel ISDN.
I'll take a look at that site of yours. I don't need the CD. :)

And yes, the echoing makes it somewhat incomprehensible at times.
See it this way: Finally a valid exuse to type with one hand ;)

Doesn't matter. As long as his spelling errors are consistent, he won't have any trouble :)
