  2. My thoughts on Long-Term PC Preservation Project? · · Score: 1

After reading some comments and the article. (from what I know) For the media, I would recommend commercial disk as dyes on disc don't last for long (or at least don't seem to last as long as pressed). Having more than one copy would be helpful probably, in case some don't work ,and trying to make sure they don't oxidize is probably you're #1 priority after disc quality. As for the computer, some have spoken about battery problems and even capacitors and maybe even data not being on the BIOS chips and the HDD not possible spinning. Battery problem - simply removing the battery and putting it in another container, but this doesn't help keep the data in the various chips. Capacitor's are probably the tricky part as they do contain a "voltage" and you can't discharge them really so...no idea. HDD - you could try SSD but I don't think they can keep data there that long? and what's the "half-life" on data on a traditional drive? assuming it's shielded from electromagnet interferences, will it stay there "forever" ? If I was going to put such a feet, I wouldn't go with a "completed" system, as it's probably too risky. Maybe you would want to provide multiply system's and prepare each part of the system, to be stored separately from each other. And provide instructions on how to put it back together (in case some parts don't work). If you put enough parts in it, you should be able to get a complete system out of it. Personal opinion, you should just throw some CRT's in the capsule, and maybe even an LCD and Plasma, the CRT should last long enough (assuming it doesn't suffer from the same problems as a computer would) and would probably be more "amazing" to people in the future. Of course I'm assuming the CRT will be 100% dead by then, and won't be like VHS (or even LD's) where they just won't completely die.

  4. embedded devices on VIA Quits Motherboard Chipset Business · · Score: 1

Well the article states that via will quit the motherboard chipset business but that's not where they make more of their profits anyways, its in the embedded devices, and that market is growing, with the rise of more advanced cell phones (a potential product/market) will rise in that category eventually, but with the rise of ultra-portable and umpc, via's mini-itx design may help them design a suitable design for such computers. With the Via Nano, via has already shown that they are ready to "kick some ass" in that market. So in short, via's main business embedded devices is never going to go away so they are just getting rid of the dead "weight" on their business

  5. technology on The Dying PC Market · · Score: 1

Technology in Japan is expanding, from what I read a few months ago here about cellphones in Japan and Europe compared to the United States, Japan uses "mobile email" and also their phones have internet and tv (wish I had one of those). I'm assuming this was mostly targeted for desktop's but I haven't seen many "appealing" desktops from Japan (especially NEC and SONY). I don't think it included Laptops or UMPC/Tablet's which are probably on the rise for their small size. I'm not sure if Japan has "DVR" like the US or even "On Demand" channels but I'm fairly certain that Japan's HDTV market is very large, since even more programming is digital in Japan.

Now ask yourself this...Would you rather have a desktop, a laptop a tablet pc or a UMPC?
I would honestly rather have a laptop or even a tablet (a UMPC is possible depending on what it is) In the United States this hasn't happen yet because their's still a large pool of people who don't even own computers. Though I'm fairly certain here laptops are on the rise while desktops are slowing down.

Life in Japan I don't know how its like exactly but pretty sure most people only go home to sleep so having a desktop there isn't really important.
You're a student? A laptop will do that job well and pretty sure even some of their smartphones they got will be able to do some things that a laptop can do.
You're a Professional? Chances are you only use a desktop at work because thats' where all your information is, plus a laptop for mobile work, a smartphone can do email and such but it can't do everything.

    Here is the big one
Gadget lovers....we like stuff to be "all-in-one" (main reason why I still haven't gotten a cellphone) and sure Japanese people are like that

*wonders if I went off a bit...*

  6. behind? on NASA to Digitize its 50 Years of Photos and Films · · Score: 2, Insightful

Why aren't they digitalized already? NASA of all people should have the money and technology to digitalized everything they have produced in their lifetime. Computers have been around a while, its what got us up into space (take it we have more powerful calculators than those computers......). I can understand older photographs and films being on film but shouldn't newer photos be all digital anyways?
