    Don't let them spring it on you once you've already burned your bridges.
    For that matter, don't burn your bridges. Leaving a company need not mean that you can never go back.

    I've seen too many people get their rocks off by telling their boss to piss off, only to find that their new job wasn't all it was cracked up to be.

    Now, I'm certainly one of those who is very wary of going back whence you came, but it's sure nice to have the option.

    You let your girlfriend tell you what to do?

    It was a choice, either her or the VAX, and that was just based on space considerations.

    Although I think the upkeep on the VAX would prob'ly cost less in the long run.

    people generally view the media as being an accurate representation of what is going on in the world. Clearly, it is not, and that is unacceptable.
    What is unacceptable? That the media is inaccurate? Or that the people believe it?

    How would you propose that we make the media accurate? Governmental regulations and accuracy requirements? So that we can have a press that is free to say only whatever the gov't says is accurate?

    Don't tell me to quit bitching when these pathetic media outlets blatently lie every day. Some level of integrity is needed.
    So what level should that integrity be? And how do you propose that it be enforced?

    I don't know about you, but frankly I'm sick of our "free and democratic" mass media passing along whatever Big Corporation Guy says like a puppet.
    You quote "free and democratic" as if it's not true, but of course the reality is that any given news source is free to report on whatever they want. Just because a vast majority of the free & democratic news outlets parrot what the RIAA says doesn't make those news outlets any less free.

    Freedom of the press belongs to those who own one. You HAVE your own press. Use it, and quit bitching that you don't hear what you want to hear.

    Jello says it best: Become the media. (And if he got it from somewhere else, please tell me.)

    The posting makes it sound like once this Bureau has its way, all ads will look a certain way.

    There's nothing stopping/forcing sites from posting ads of any given size or shape. It's not like there's some sort of banner ad RFC sites have to conform to.

    OK, let me rephrase this.

    How about if there's a middle ground? Netscape is uptight about everything. Missing the closing TABLE tag means you get no table at all.

    MSIE makes many assumptions, and draws the table based on a best guess. It also shows some errors if there are problems in the Javascript.

    How about a middle ground, where the browser does make a best guess, yet will provide an error to the designer that wants it?

    I just don't understand what the fuss is all about... Puff Daddy has been ripping off good music and artists for years, then defacing it. Nobody's bitched about that.
    That's because they're getting their pay. They've been paying the original artists via writing credits all the way back to Vanilla Ice having to give the guys in Queen a credit on "Ice Ice Baby".

    Hell, go back to Willie Dixon suing Zep.

    If it looks like its gonna take me at least as long to understand whats there as it is to rewrite it, I rewrite it.
    And how can you possibly rewrite it if you don't understand what's there? Chances are that if the code is crap, that there's also no supporting documentation, or that what's there is horribly incorrect and outdated (like most code documentation).

    And if you don't know what the code's supposed to do, how can you recreate it?

    because nobody is irreplacable.... The company will survive.
    And if your boss doesn't have his head up his ass, he'll know this.

    When you make a threat "do X or I quit" to your boss, one of two things will happen:

    1. If he's stupid, he'll give in to your demands, or
    2. If he's smart, he'll say "I'm sorry that you won't be with us any more. Let me call HR and security."
    So, you wind up either fired, or staying working for a stupid boss.

    Talk about a no-win situation.

    Actually, that behaviour is valid. Many criminals are caught because they're idiots, and do idiot things like hang around the crime scene, blab to friends, etc etc. Checking your own handiwork hours after the fact is common behaviour.
    John Douglas' books are pretty accessible, and are pretty amazing about why things happen. His latest is The Anatomy Of Motive , and is as good a starting place as any. There's an extensive chapter on arson, which is a perfect example of criminals regularly returning to the scene.

    he was advertising in chat rooms and whatnot, thats like a drug dealer walking around screaming "Buy your drugs here!". people like that usually deserve to get caught.
    I'm always amused by the attitude of "deserve to get caught", as if the method of the perpetration of the illegality has any bearing on their actions. Are you saying that covert drug dealing is OK, but flagrant drug dealing is OK? Murder's OK so long as you hide the bodies real good?

    personally i just wonder how i manage to kill a cloud of gnats with a spear, then they drop a chain mail. strong bugs.
    And then, if you're a barbarian, you loot their corpse to find a potion or item that was previously unseen.

    The big benefit of searching corpses for potions/items is that they're no longer raisable by shamen. Same holds true if your paladin uses Redemption; ya get the life/mana, and they can't come back to life.
