  1. Re:Why? on The Future of Leap Seconds · · Score: 1

I would agree with you on that one. The information on the site isn't extremeley easy to comprehend but I don't see what the problem with having them is. Towards the bottom there is a link with someones view that having more leap seconds might make the system work better.

Perhaps the problem is that with the leap seconds being inserted basically whenever the people desire it isn't regular and therefore easily predictable so it makes it difficult to properly propogate the decesion to insert a leap second to everywhere that needs to know in advance. Like I said I don't totaly understand all of the info on the page perhaps someone in the know can fill us in.

  4. Re:Pumpless circulation on Tiny Bubbles Key to Cooling Crazy Hot CPUs · · Score: 5, Informative

The benefit of "tiny bubbles" is the bubbles or transfering latent heat of vaporization into the channel (the energy required to boil the fluid), these bubbles also cause mixing of the fluid in the channel.

Two terms to look up if your interested in this aspect of Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow would be subnucleate boiling and the departure from it. There is a balance between the amount of boiling and the amount of heat transfer. Not enough and you don't get many benifits... too much and the large bubbles that form on the channel walls effectively create a steam void that has a much higher specific heat then the fluid used for cooling... basically it is acting as an insulator preventing heat transfer into the fluid in the channel... a very bad thing [tm]. That is where departure from nucleate boiling comes in (this being the good thing) departure being where it starts getting bad very quickly.

Think pot of water for spaghetti before the water really starts boiling... Oh, and I apologize for my horendous spelling but you don't have to spell to run a nuclear reactor.

I'm not a Red Hat subscriber and I don't work for Red Hat so I'm not certain but seems to me the point of the subscription might not necessarily be to get it a week early, perhaps the point is to get it at a somewhat good rate when it is first available. In other words by charging for the privlidge to download it from them they are decreasing the number of people who download it right away. Somewhat like the Slashdot subscription system and being able to get to sites before they are slashdotted.

They actually do. All of the data analysis so far has been based on the live telemetry that was captured. The significance of this tape lies in that it has an additional 14 seconds of data. Which as someone else pointed out, I'm not sure that would necesarily be a big help if it was already too late. Perhaps there is also more details of the time leading up to that 14 seconds.

There is a company I use called Vonage. They provide you with a free Cisco ATA when you signup. You aren't renting it, you own it. You pay $10 for shipping (I got mine two days later) and your first month and your good to go. Has caller-id, three way calling, voicemail and some really powerful forwarding features that can make your phone bounce all over the place and then back to your voicemail with them. One draw back is they have a cancellation fee (about $39 I think). All in all, they have been great for us... it is our only phone now. Upstream requirement is 90kbs. And no, I don't work for them... just a satisfied customer.

  13. Re:That's all well and good... on Senator Calls For Copy-Protection Tags · · Score: 1

From what I see that is the point of the bill... The ability to know before you've even made the choice. Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean that it won't work on your specific equipment due to the copy protection. It could actually make it worse for consumers in this instance. Someone who normally doesn't have a problem with copy protected CDs on thier equipment, or doesn't know, would be even less likely to get a refund if there was a problem.

"I'm sorry sir but it clearly says that it contains copy protection and may not play properly on all equipment"

  14. Great Idea... on Senator Calls For Copy-Protection Tags · · Score: 2, Insightful

I think this idea definatley has merit. Adam Thierer seems to think otherwise, "The better alternative to federal mandates on either side of this debate is to instead just encourage a technological free-for-all in the marketplace," Thierer said. "Let the industry do whatever it wants in an attempt to bottle up their content, but also let consumers continue to experiment with and use digital content in creative ways without fears of federal intervention at every turn... There's no reason for Congress to intervene in an attempt to solve each and every intellectual property dispute, as has seemingly becoming the case in recent years."

But I think he seems to be missing part of the beauty of this. The bill wouldn't forbid or require that copy protection be used it would simply require disclosure of them to the consumer so that the consumer can make the choice on their own. Many states have similiar "full disclosure" laws when selling real-estate. I don't see how this would be considered much defferent.

    Just my 2 cents.
