I thought we became a super power after the Europeans bombed the crap out of each other so that they were basically all 3rd world countries and then we rolled in and bombed them some more. Add to that what happened in the Pacific Theater and basically we came out way ahead since we could actually build stuff and produce food. We really weren't on the gold standard during or after WWII since an individual US citizen couldn't actually redeem their dollars for gold from the government, but only foreign governments could, but after WWII they were all dirt poor and indebted to the US anyway so what did that matter.
You do realize that it was illegal for individuals in the US to own gold bullion at that time. It was however legal to own foregin currency that was legal tender, certain collectible gold coins, and gold jewelry. Most notable of the collectible coins were the US gold double eagle ($20 coin) especially the 1933 dated one. For foreign currency the South African Krugerrand was dominant until the US in 1986 started again issuing American Gold Eagle bullion coins. Also at that time an individual could not redeem dollars for gold even though the international gold window was still open.
It is for that reason that I know they can be trusted.
Who Kucinich and Paul or the Federal Reserve? Personally this passes my test of if Paul and Kucinich are against something it is probably bad. Each of these individuals represents what even their own parties considers the extreme ends so if they are in agreement that says something about how good or bad something is.
Well the old playground at the park by my house was one of the safe ones, the new one has all the unsafe things. Guess which ones the neighborhood kids play at? HINT: It is the one with the tire swing, ropes, cargo net like thing, and self powered spinning things.
You should see the bruises my oldest gets all on his own. If social services saw them I would probably be hauled off since they would probably think I beat the child. Last year he was running through a park and something caught his eye so he wasn't looking where he was going. He plowed right into a metal pole at a full speed run. It looked exactly like the old cartoons with arms and legs out and his body against the pole. He falls on things, falls off of things, trips, jumps, and tosses thing, he is your average 3 year old.
I take it you were never were in Boy Scouts. When I was young there was nothing better then chasing each other through the forest, often with big sticks, climbing pine trees and dropping stuff on others. Truth is kids are probably less likely to get hurt in a forest than in an urban landscape since forests tend to be squish compared to concrete and asphalt.
That or the other crazy parents. I have been taken to task for letting my oldest (almost 3) play on all the equipment. He has fallen, spun around till he puked, and even gotten a little banged up, but he is no worse for wear. Hell it's not like he is jumping off the garage roof like I did when I was little, that was fun though.
At the park nearest my house they recently put in a new playground. Thankfully it still has some "unsafe" equipment. My oldest (almost 3) wanted to swing on the big swings a couple of weeks ago. So I put him on and started pushing him. Eventually he wanted me to get on the swing next to him. When we were both swinging he fell of and did a nice face plant from falling forward off the swing. He had a few little scrapes and a mouth full of sand, he cried a bit but I told him he was ok. He then went and got right back on the swing. He has also fallen off slides and rope things (a cargo net like structure) and still goes back. There is an older "safe" playground at this park but he never want to go there.
I did listen to it and to me he seemed a bit far to the left for me. I lean libertarian quite a bit but like you like listening to radio that I don't agree with as it allows me to be more informed and it can challenge you beliefs. Since he isn't on the air anymore I usually listen to Thom Hartmann on my drive home who also seems to try to have honest debates, but he does get into a shouting match some times. It is on a delay here in the twin cities and is on air from 2pm to 5pm. That said I wouldn't vote for Hartmann for the same reasons that I didn't vote for Franken his radio persona seems committed to his belief and if he ran as more of a moderate I would think he was pandering.
The few good politicians that have, follow, and run on principals other than I want to be a career politician just get drowned out and called the extreme nut jobs by the rest of their party.I would also throw Dennis Kucinich in as a good politician. In my years of following politics it seems that if both Ron Paul and Dennis Kucinich are for something it is probably a good thing, and if they are against it it is probably a very bad thing. Too bad that when they are in agreement the rest of the house and senate seem to vote the other way.
You don't even have to mention Al Franken to get the "conservatives" to stampede to proclaim the NBC/Comcast merger as the best thing since sliced bread, they will naturally do it. I would say with Franken's record in the Senate I am seriously considering voting for him next time. Last time around I didn't vote for either since Franken's talk show persona was so different from how he was running I didn't know what one to believe, but I was sick of the lies and BS from Coleman.
Actually the big board is something that is of use. It provides a nice general overview of the entire system to all of the operators. Individuals with the local displays can pull up further information on the areas that they are concerned with. Also in case of emergency where people need to react quickly to issues the big board already provides the basic information that everyone needs instead of everyone having to go and open the same stupid display. There is a movement towards a single pane of glass in the industry. As far blaming this on NASA or Hollywood, this has been around for a long time in the industry, the first time I went into a control room I was surprised that Hollywood had not lied to me. This control room was initially setup and build close to 20 years ago and they had multiple displays up at the front of the room. Granted it wasn't a single pane of glass, but it has been this way for a long time. Even talking to the old timers I work with who grew up in the power industry they would still have big displays up at the front of the room, now instead of a paper map with light bulbs in it we have a computer rendered map that can be updated and zoomed to show even more detail to everyone in real time.
As I work in this industry, let me explain. An ISO is an independent system operator. Typically they manage the long haul high voltage transmission lines going between local power providers. Their main function is to move power from where it is generated to where it is needed at the lowest cost. They run a market system where they predict the demand and then accept bids from generators. Once bids have been accepted then they have to solve the distribution problem to actually move the power to the final destinations. Now depending on the ISO they may have some additional control over the individual local power companies such as being able to control generating capacity, but not ISOs have this ability.
Mostly what these people do all day is monitor the grid. In looking at the display it looks like they have the following on the display:
1. An alarm list
2. weather map, or possibly a map board that would show line statuses and where issues are
3. Some system machine statuses (this would be for the machines that are in their data center running the grid)
4. A substation or region network map
Now what individual operators have up on their multitude of screens would be possibly be similar displays but showing information they care about, network model management, transmission network management displays, market system displays, and so on.
Didn't slashdot recently have a piece about hos games were mostly being created with a list of features that were considered must haves instead of actually deciding if the feature would add something to the game. This is just the new must have feature on the list.
It was just a feature that needed to be included so it was shoehorned in. I have seen a few 3D movies and the only one where I thought it was done well and didn't feel like a feature that needed to be included was Avatar. I kind of wanted to see the toy story movies in 3D, but never got around to it, as I think it could have made the movies more immersive as it probably wouldn't have felt so forced.
Now if only some of the movies coming out had some depth in the plot. As much as I like some good brain melt mindless action, but I really enjoy movies with actual plot development. I watch different movies with different expectations, but now so many movies seem like they are being produced with a checklist of features of which 3D is one of the new must have features.
Even though I never played sports games I knew a lot of people in college who did. They all complained that it was just a big racket since it was just roster change 20xx. Granted every few years there would be AI or graphics updates, but it was mostly just changes in percentages, stats, and rosters.
No. I thought the same thing as well. My only thought along those lines was how could land mines disfigure the avatars any more than the users already do?
Social security will never actually go away and if I implied that it would that isn't what I was going for. My basic points are:
1. The trust fund isn't a room/vault filled with $100 bills, but is a bunch of government bonds
2. When all of the bonds are cashed out social security will not be able to pay all of its obligations. It will be able to pay some percentage, that if I remember correctly it is around 75% or so and that doesn't happen until some time in the mid 2030's. A quick google search confirms this with the most recent result from Social Security Board of Trustees.
Also my assessment of what happens when Social Security starts to sell the bonds seems to be in agreement with the board for trustees findings:
The drawdown of Social Security and HI trust fund reserves and the general revenue transfers into SMI will result in mounting pressure on the Federal budget. In fact, pressure is already evident. For the sixth consecutive year, a "Medicare funding warning" is being triggered, signaling that projected non-dedicated sources of revenues -- primarily general revenues -- will soon account for more than 45 percent of Medicare’s outlays. That threshold was in fact breached for the first time in fiscal 2010. A Presidential proposal is required by law in response to the latest warning.
The BS that they pull in trying to hid the solution to get you to pay. Granted you usually just need to scroll to the bottom, or use the Google cache of it. But they do some dodgy things. I would prefer the product search engines go before ExpertsExchange since you are correct there is some value to ExpertsExchange. Also on the list of things that should go are those sites that republish others content as their own they are by far the worst.

So basically you are saying this is political cock waving.

Here is a google maps link. Much larger.
