This latter fact is critical. I know of a business which is currently liquidating its assets because of the economic situation. If said business had bought all iMacs about a year ago when they expanded, then they could recover about 70-80% of their purchase price. I'd be surprised if low-end Dell, HP, and Gateway machines hold their value like that.
I know it is fashionable these days to label any defense of Macs as fanboism, but they are a good value if you consider a computer as an asset instead of disposable hardware.
Also, the idea of upgrading hardware is somewhat antiquated with the advent of high speed wired connectivity (e.g. fw800) and wireless devices. I started buying macs for my personal computer when I finally recognized the asset nature of computers and the needlessness of internal upgrades (beyond memory).

Here is something that helped me work my way through college: smile and offer every customer friendly and impeccable service, even if you are simply refilling their tea. That will keep you employed. Too many people in the service industry (e.g. sales people at Circuit-Somethings) have shitty attitudes. At least this current batch has the opportunity for some real world experience. Or they could become bus drivers. You can be a complete asshole and drive like a maniac as a bus driver and still be employed. There are plenty of opportunities out there judging from the shitty service I get every day. Nope, don't feel sorry for any of them.

Myopic business practices are the principle reason for the current economic downturn. The corrections that we see happen right now are better for the long run: greater personal saving, less foreign labor, less credit, less risky investment strategy, etc. The current trend of "brain drain" is but one part of the correction cycle and I welcome it.
